We set off even earlier than usual, adrenalin giving energy to an exhausted situation. Alison and I drove together, going through our bible and adding a few last minute changes.
We got to a rather strange location in the middle of no where that housed a little retro diner that was to be the backdrop for the first part of the prom story. The before party. We were building up to a total of 14 models in one shot - 14 MODELS!!! - all drinking milkshakes and dancing in old school booths. It looked great but our fears of the milkshakes became a reality when one of the models spilt a drop on the front of her red floor length gown. I managed to get the mark out of the dress just as our props arrived.... two beautiful Caddilacs and a vintage VW combi.
After a group shot in the caddy we got back to business. I spent the majority of the morning locked in the room we'd turned into a changing area slash collection room, covered in clothing, dressing a bunch of teenagers, trying to pump them out fast enough for the photographer who was not messing around. We did seriously well... I think we got about 10 shots in the morning session alone, which considering the attention to detail in each one, is a serious achievement!
We broke for lunch before moving on to our next location which was going to be even more challenging than the diner had been...
We were going to a specific patch of road with nothing but tarmac to help us get the shots we needed. On top of the obvious hurdles the wind was howling which was not making life easier. I got beaten up by a panel van when the wind caught the door which slammed shut, smashing my hand as I tried to stop it, sending me flying into the middle of the van and effectively trapping me in the pitch black. Thankfully Shereen was sitting in the front, heard me go flying and let me out. A week later I honestly think I may have fractured a bone in my little finger! ๐ฐ
The above picture was taken on the way home, I don't think I need to explain how happy we were that the day was over....
An hour later we were back at the hotel and back in the collection room that I was beginning to hate with the kind of passion that comes from being stuck somewhere when you would give anything to rather be asleep. Trying to keep a sense of humour failure at bay I reminded myself that there was only one more intense day ahead of us which would be my last of the year and after which I could finally sleep. We wrapped for the night and mumbled our goodbyes before I somehow drove home - half asleep - made sure my alarms were still set and crawled into bed. Just 1 more 4am start....just 1...
