Azolla microphylla as a supplemental feed for birds

in life •  7 years ago

I was introduced to this water plant by a friend in the farming industry. A quick search on the internet showed some promising profile of this plant. The main attractive feature is the ease of cultivation and speed of production. Doubling its bio-mass in 3 days (+-). Throw in the high protein value for a green based feed... impossible not to try it out. =)

Initially cultivated in a styrofoam box from a clump taken from a friend... it grows well and currently resides in 5 tubs of more or less similar sizes...IMG_20180129_162420.jpg

Two of which actually meant for waterlilies, but I suppose they could co-exist. But note that the waterlilies seems to have no space to rest its leaves...IMG_20180129_162405.jpg

The birds need a little getting used to it... on the 2nd day, they seems to accept it willingly... the breeding finches and others in single cages...
Here is a Yellow-rumped seedeater nibbling at it after belting out a song...
