My name is Dennis Fassuliotis. I live in what has been described as the "most beautiful city in America," Charleston SC. We have become a mega tourist destination and this once sleepy little southern town runs full steem (pun not originally intended but what the heck) 24/7.
I married a true one in a million Southern girl on my second time around. I am 2nd generation Greek American with a very small immediate family she is related to half of Charleston County and the other half is from "off" as we say in the South.
This past Saturday night, Veterans Day 2017, we were having an oyster roast, celebrating my step daughters new job and birthday. I thought to myself this may be an interesting cold month in the South past time that a lot of people from "off" may not be familiar with so I snapped a few pics and started to tell some of my family members about Steem.
Just about the same time my wife's 94 year old father and step mom of 40 years came in, immediately stealing everyone's attention. And rightfully so, Pops was a WWII vet, enjoyed wearing his cap and the attention it brought, a sociable guy, amazing story teller with many yet to tell and practical joker. My wife was the youngest of six and always his "baby."
5 generations of my wife's family in this pic. That's Pops on the right, my wife in back of him. Me in the "way back" as we say around here, grandma on the far left, his 2 year old great great grandson, great grand daughter and granddaugther in the middle.
Quite a legacy. Never thought I would be a great grandfather, given my kids are just in their 20's but they came along with marrying the most heartfelt person I have ever met.
Pops and Mama Pat left early to go on their Veteran's night dinner date. So cute. He gave my wife a hug, told her she was always his baby, gave her a kiss and said good bye.
We didn't want them to go.
Two hours later on their way home from dinner. They were in an automobile accident. This 94 year old WWII combat veteran died in the early hours the next morning of injuries sustained in the crash. Mama is in still in critical condition.
Take a minute... Hug your kids, kiss your wife or significant other, call a friend that you haven't spoken with in years. Don't ever hold back from telling the ones you love that you love them.
In the blink of an eye it can change, the surreal kicks in and then a hard slap of reality.
In memory of William Brunson. May his memory be eternal.
