Harm Reduction: A guide to the MDMA house party.
While I know that sometimes the use of drugs is not a popular subject for some, it should be discussed for harm-reduction purposes. People are going to do what they want. They should at least do so from an informed state. What follows is some of my personal observations and recommendations, but are in no way the full story. I have linked a website at the bottom that I feel covers the greatest part of what anyone might want to know about MDMA, the use of, it's effects, etc. Please consider checking it out.

Preparation:
Before the party, there are some things to consider to help reduce the harm to yourself and improve the recovery after. Taking steps ahead of time can definitely reduce the duration of any hangover, improve the experience during, and cut back on side-effects.
- Elemental Magnesium (@ 500-1000 mg taken 1 hour previous)
- Vitamin C (@ 1000 mg taken 1-2 hours previous)
- Tums (@ 2-3 tablets taken 30 min previous)
- No food for 2-3 hours preceding dose. No earlier than that.
- Be well-rested and consider a nap.
Each of these serves a purpose.
- The magnesium will greatly help any jaw-clenching as it is a natural nerve impulse block and is well known to help with bruxism (jaw-clenching).
- The vitamin C in this form will slowly absorb but still allow for the antioxidants to be present to help with brain function during the roll and help prevent/repair damage to brain chemistry. (Antioxidants are good for a reason)
- Tums (calcium carbonate) lowers the pH of the stomach and of the body in general over time. This allows the MDMA to remain in the stomach longer before being broken down by acidity. Increases absorption, lengthening the experience, smoothing out the ‘come-up’ period and possibly increasing effective experience during the roll.
- Not eating for at least 2 hours before dosing is important for a similar reason, it will lower the acidity of the stomach and speed absorption, preventing a delayed come-up and increasing effectiveness.
- Being well rested will assist with carrying the energy into the full length of the party. (10-12 hours is not an impossible thing)
The Come-Up:
Once you have taken your initial dose, the size of which can vary from person to person, you will have a period of time to wait before you feel any effects.
During this time, don't try and focus on a lack of feeling something. You can and will delay the onset by worrying. Relax, talk with the rest of the group, and if you are noticing others who are quicker to react starting to feel something, ask them about it. Imagine yourself feeling those things, and you will likely start to.
Once you are feeling anything at all, you are in what is called the ‘come-up’. This will generally be a feeling of relaxation at first, comfortable, maybe even sleepy if your mind associates that feeling with how you feel before bed.
It will eventually rise into something more intense, and may even catch you off-guard. Do not worry, as it is intended to come in waves. Enjoy the ride and the people around you. It’s unlikely you will be anxious for long while on MDMA.
The Roll:
Enjoy the initial hour or so and then consider a re-dose if you are going to be going into the morning with the rest of the group. Several people will likely choose to re-dose a couple times during the party to extend the duration.
As the roll progresses you will likely lose focus on time and just be riding from one sensation to the next. Perfect! This is the intended function of a house-party on MDMA. Share it with those around you, tell them how you are feeling. They will feel it too.
It goes in peaks and valleys, but will generally be more intense than just base-line life. You will share peaks with your friends in time to the music, or due to some sort of stimulus.
Things to consider:
- MDMA is known as an entactogen, this means that it enhances tactile sensations. Touch things, and each other. (Erotic thoughts tend to disappear when you are fully rolling, as do a lot of social anxieties.)
- Sensations in general are heightened and will actually build off each other.
- Smell is a strong connection to the brain, so anything that smells pleasant or strong in a pleasant way is worth the trouble. Consider having things like Vick's and Peppermint oil around to assist with this.
- Light shows should be a thing, enjoy the colors and the lights while allowing your eyes to lose focus.
- Giving is almost as great as receiving. Return favors to feel the empathy of those around you.
- Dance like nobody's watching, since you won’t really care if your friends are in fact, watching, during this.
- If you are feeling like you aren’t feeling things, speak up. Everyone will help to get you peaking.
Some of these won’t make sense reading before-hand, and might be forgotten in the moment. Fear not, most of this will come naturally, and you are not alone.
The Come-Down:
So, it’s mid-morning, and you are tired and still feeling really amazing from the roll. While you are likely not feeling impaired due to drugs, you are likely impaired due to fatigue. Consider taking at least a nap at minimum before driving anywhere. If you can’t sleep, talk with anyone still awake. Remember the experience, share stories, etc.
It can be really pleasant.
Post:
Take a 5-HTP and a Vitamin C, possibly another magnesium.
Take another 5-HTP each day for a couple more days.
5-HTP is a chemical precursor to 5-HT, which you might have heard of. It's serotonin.
This will help you get your levels back to normal sooner and help lessen any hangover type effects you might have. (Not everyone will, and it usually depends on dose and duration during the roll). The Vitamin C and Magnesium are to help carry over the benefits of the doses you took of each the night before.
Get some sleep as soon as possible. Just about any general 'hard-party' recovery stuff helps. Also, be aware that you likely didn’t eat very well if at all during the night.
Things to bring:
- Comfy clothes that aren’t too warm. (Your body temp will rise quite a bit while on MDMA.)
- Comfy clothes that are warmer to wear over the other comfy clothes. (The house will be cold to start.)
- Glasses if you normally wear contacts. Your eyes will thanks you for this.
- Anything fuzzy or fun to touch you might have.
- Chewing gum if you have a specific flavor you prefer.
- Insulated drink container if you like. Helps keep water around.
- Easy to eat pleasure foods that don’t require prep or a fridge to stay good for several hours. You might get the urge.
There is a lot of information out there on this subject, but finding a credible source that is focused on harm-reduction is key.

Can I add one suggestion to this? I'm not a fan of drugs but in terms of safety, perhaps it would be best if someone in the group remains "sober" each time just in case someone has a bad reaction or some other outside trouble arises. I get that people do things and make their own choices and I definitely think your tips will help those who make those choices be prepared. But I really think it would be good for people to remember to have someone around who can and will get help or do whatever is necessary. People do have weird unexplained reactions to things on occasion. Just like you need a designated driver.

I agree with this generally for all psychoactive substances that are taken for recreational purposes. I personally haven't found it needed on this myself, as I maintain judgement during the use of it, but it is never a bad idea to have a 'trip-sitter' or sober individual around to help, should the need arise.

5-HTP is generally known to be a mood enhancer, as it is a precursor for 5-HT (Serotonin). Taken too close to the intended time of dose, 24hrs previous generally, it can hamper the effects a bit. I found it shortened and lessened any feeling of 'bleh' after the fact mostly. No real side-effects were noticed by me, myself. Still, always do your own research when possible.

fantastic. I will try this out for sure. Will do some research on it of course. Not sure if its even available where I am living as they are pretty strict about any kind of pharmeceutical. Either way, anything to get rid of the 'bleh' afterwards, is worth it. Just had a thought that if I pumped my body full of serotonin afterwards, then my brain might get confused and stop secreting more, which would make my 'bleh' phase just hit even later.

5-HTP doesn't pump serotonin, it just helps your brain re-make the amount it needs faster. No way to over-do it so long as you take the regular amount.
Here in the US, it is available at GNC or other similar stores.
