The power of viral things (The Nugget Boy)

in life •  7 years ago  (edited)

A couple months ago I read a news about something that really shocked me, It was a reportage about a person who has broken the record of the most retweeted tweet of the history beating the previews record which was of Ellen DeGeneres who used to have the record thanks to her famous "Oscar Selfie" The famous picture of Ellen the popular American comedian with some of the most famous actors and actresses in the world  in the Oscar's in 2014 ceremony which become the most re tweeted tweet of the history with more of 3,4 million of retweets. The record was broken for Carter Wilkerson a teenage from Nevada.

I think is a very rare story, this was a regular gay, he wasn't popular in the world and now He has this record, How did he do that? Everything started as a funny tweet of this guy asking the official account of the famous hamburgers chain "Wendy's" how many retweets did he need, to receive from Wendy's a complete year of free chicken Nuggets. Wendy's thought that it was going to be a funny answer to tell Carter that they were going to give him what he was looking for if he was able to arrive until 18 million retweets.

That was the beginning of everything, Carter take a screenshot of the conversation with Wendy's account and that was his Tweet next to the phrase " HELP ME PLEASE. A MAN NEEDS HIS NUGGS " for his own surprise the next morning he has 50,000 retweets in some time the "#NuggsForCarter"  become trending topic and  people started retweet this boy and he went viral in very few time, people started to call him Nugget Boy. When he was going close to break the record, the old owner of the record showed up in her show and ask people to help her to keep her record retweeting her old tweet and not Carter's She also called Bradley Cooper to help her with that.

Actually she invited Carter to her show and she gave him a big Tv and a supply of underwear as a "bride" for Carter to not broke her record, she knew that he was going to breack her record.

He became so popular and many recognized accounts started to help and supporting him, some of them were Google, Amazon, United among others, even he was too close that  Ellen promised that she will donate $100k to DTFA supporting adoption when Carter breaks her record.

Finally the moment arrived and he only needed few more than a month to do it, he didn't arrived until 18 millions of retweets but he broke the record and that was enough for Wendys's and they kept their promise and gave Carter a complete year of free Chicken nuggets, at the same time Ellen did the same with her promise.

The life of this boy totally changed, he became very popular in very few time, actually he pas since 150 followers on Twitter until more than 104K, he received the support of many people even famous people, also the World guinness record congratulate him on Twitter, all that because he wanted his nuggets. He received many thing besides the Nuggets from many famous people, he had many interviews, also Twitter gave him the mark of recognized person.

I'm not going to say I'm not impress because of this because I am, but at the same time I think that is a little sad that  these kind of things are those that become viral and not another that are more important for example the critical situation of some countries among many things, I'm not criticizing Carter, but I think there are more important thinks that deserve to be famous than a guy who broke a record by Twitter, but Who am I to say that? All what I can say is, enjoy it Carter.
