Lighting Plato’s Cave with Netflix and Star Wars

in life •  7 years ago  (edited)

Shadows are dancing on the wall of Plato’s cave. Are they real or are they a distorted reflection of reality? If you’ve studied philosophy, political theory, or classical teachings, then you may know the Allegory of the Cave. If it’s new, let me loosen your chains. This is some rabbit hole.

In Plato’s cave analogy, there is a fire outside that casts light on the cave wall. And one group of people, prisoners who are chained in a line facing the wall, see only the shadows on the cave wall. To them, reality consists of these shadows. And to some extent, this allegory describes the human condition, since we are dependent on our senses and we form impressions based on what we perceive, even when we have a very incomplete picture of reality.

MLK.jpg

If one prisoner could break away from the chain, then he could escape the cave. Outside in the light, his eyes would adjust to seeing real people and places, not merely shadows. Of course, Plato and Socrates suggested that the escapee would doubt what he saw and then want to return to the cave. That may be true for some, but it generally seems like an elitist notion to say that only the good people can live outside the cave.

Elitism Hurts Us All

The Allegory of the Cave is elitist at its core. The upshot is that only educated people get see the world for what it is, while the less educated are stuck inside a cave of shadows. I don’t necessarily disagree with this. I’d rather trust someone with a good education to run my country or my company.

What bothers me is where this leads. It leads to exclusive groups, insider clubs, and the self-perpetuating belief that the elites who run the world are better than others. A separation grows based on heredity and economic status. Different classes are created which divide people based upon wealth, race, gender, and other factors that should be utterly meaningless in today’s world.

Elitism.jpg

Economic imbalances persist as we perpetuate the system. Soon, we end up with severe economic inequality and a world where lack of opportunity feeds peoples’ interest in extremist political ideas (sound familiar?). Meanwhile, we fail to recognize that many of our best people are stuck in the cave.

That doesn’t mean everyone in the cave is worthy of leadership. But they have every right to the opportunities that have been denied to them. Opportunities include education and knowledge.

For those who have the skills to lead in any field, they should be welcomed. A true meritocracy welcomes its best, no matter what the person’s background. Even from a selfish perspective, upward mobility is absolutely critical, because it helps us identify and support our best talent.

Leadership According to Netflix, Ricardo Semler, and Andrew Chakhoyan

In a recent article for the World Economic Forum, author Andrew Chakhoyan posed the question, “Is the era of management over?” He led with a quote from a viral TED Talk in which Ricardo Semler suggested: “The key to management is to get rid of the managers.”

Chakhoyan then referenced the famous Netflix slide deck that was developed by its Human Resources Director and its CEO. That slide deck also went viral after Facebook’s Chief Operating Officer, Sheryl Sandberg, said that it “may well be the most important document to come out of (Silicon) Valley.” The key takeaway was that, as an organization’s complexity grows, the percentage of high performance employees decreases.

Source: Netflix.

The more managers you add, the more performance from the best workers declines. The implication is that managers can get in the way. Many employees do a better job when we trust them with the responsibility and let them get it done their own way. Netflix is famous for trusting its employees with a great deal of responsibility, from setting their own vacations to not having to submit expense reports.

The author’s examples all come from Silicon Valley, which is not a microcosm of human labor. It is a white collar world. Tech companies hire highly educated employees who are highly paid to produce results. What works for Apple or Google may not be as successful for managing employees of various salary and skill levels at restaurants, banks, retail stores, schools, assembly plants, janitorial services, car dealerships, and other organizations.

Nevertheless, the idea of a “post-management era” blasts the door wide open.

Boss.jpg
Gone fishing?

“What it boils down to,” according to Chakhoyan, “is that all the work that requires supervision is being outsourced to robots and algorithms. Non-standard, creative, experimental work, on the other hand, doesn’t naturally lead itself to management.”

Light another fire in Plato’s cave. If workers are expected to be productive, we need them to see what they are doing and understand its importance. Showing workers only their piece of the puzzle is the old model, especially if the cave’s chain gang managers were laid off in favor of robots or less control over employees.

[Those ex-managers found out no one was hiring managers, so they went off to drive for Uber or post on Steemit! Jobs will become harder to find, but hopefully the near future opens many more flexible opportunities for people.]

Star Wars Joins the Party

If we’re turning on Netflix in the cave instead of watching shadows, how about choosing a movie? As soon as Star Wars: The Last Jedi is available on video, it may be an apt choice. Without spoiling the plot for those of you who have not seen the movie yet, I’ll confine myself to the movie’s title and what’s publicly known from the movie’s free trailers.

Luke Skywalker proclaims (even in one of the trailers) that the Jedi must end. And who are the Jedi? An elitist group that holds the balance of the universe in their hands. They may be more good than evil, but is their elitism good? They hold their power exclusively. Certainly, they have a skill set that is not common, but at some level, those skills could be developed in more people. And there may be people with natural skills (as we saw from Anakin Skywalker, Luke’s father, before he became Darth Vader) who are not necessarily Jedis.

At my home, we had some family visiting over the holidays who had not seen this new Star Wars movie yet, so now I have seen it twice. For anyone who doubted that the # MeToo movement was taking over popular culture and exposing many years’ worth of bad leadership (in the form of sexual harassment), all you have to do is look at the preview trailers before this Star Wars movie to confirm that times have changed.

DiversityinForce.jpg
Diversity in Force. Source: Disney.

The playing field is being leveled like never before. I counted no less than three ads for upcoming movies where the heroic lead is a girl or woman. And that’s not counting Star Wars itself, which has turned to a strong female heroine and a diverse supporting cast.

Popular culture is insisting that we move forward together. Giving everyone the same opportunities is not only the right thing to do. It also makes us stronger.

The cave grows brighter. It’s a start. Someday, those chains will become a tourist attraction and people will pay to see shadow puppets.

Very interesting post! You weave together many thoughts and ideas in this one post. I liked the fact that you used classic sources like the allegory of the cave, but also modern pop culture references to make your post and support your ideas! If there is one thing that is clear to me, it is that elitism has always been present in societies throughout history, but our acknowledgment of elitism and awareness of it can create positive change going forward. Elitism may always exist, but we can continue to work to balance the division.

Your comment is spot on. It will never be erased fully. But if we recognize it and demand something better, then I think we can do better as a society.

I completely agree! Glad there are people out there like you who want to make a better society! You have done a great job at pinpointing a really problem of today. Now all we have to do is get out there and try and make this world a better place! Have a good day :)

REALLY GOOD COMMENT

Many employees do a better job when we trust them with the responsibility and let them get it done their own way.

This is what i will like to term a decentralized system of running an organization and this sure has a way to make productivity worth striving for and when this is a target, employees and employers become winners. Nice post and also the Star Wars Diversity just goes a long way to show how we can do good if we allow our people to be themselves by first believing in them to do right.

So just they know, the elites are just elites and will never be truly able to lay claim to ruling the world. If you take away that elitism, you will discover they are as empty as can be. The ruling is with the creative commons and the tides are changing.

I'm merely writing about giving people opportunity. You, on the other hand, are making this happen every day by empowering people who have had no such opportunities, and giving them a reason to hope. :)

Thanks boss, I guess your writings helps me see the need to act and i am trying to be a good student of an awesome teacher.

This post is one of the most interesting post i have read in a while. So much put together.

"The key takeaway was that, as an organization’s complexity grows, the percentage of high performance employees decreases."

I totally agree with the above quote. Many people tend to be more effective/efficient when they are trusted to do what they know how to do. The presence of a superior breathing down ones throat, could cause nervousness and affect productivity.
Enjoyed reading this post altogether. I must confess this is one post i have read every word from begining to end in a long while.

Thanks for the insights and Happy New Year to you. I'm flattered that you read the whole post. :)

A deep idea by Plato. He is probably about the masses living in a mode of ignorance I'm trying to challenge this little, but the public does not agree with them.Such a challenger was Socrates.
He dared to ask these questions and ultimately sacrificed his life. But his philosophy lives amongest us @donkeypong

Thank you and happy new year to you too.

Man, you touched on some great topics here, almost too much. I think we could talk about pieces of you article for hours on end, so I'll try to keep to the point here. I fully agree that we need a system where people are based on merits, but then again how do we determine merits? does getting a good grade on a science test prove that someone is good at science, or that said person is just good at memorizing information? The school system as it is, needs a whole lot of fixing. We teach to the general and don't do enough to recognize that students re not all the same. Then there is the issue of public schooling vs private. Who is receiving the better education, is the government purposely keeping certain schools down so the children coming out of them are not able to compete with children from elite families?
What should we be teaching in school? Arguments can be made that coding language is now just as important as English or Math and yet no computer programming courses are mandatory anywhere.
I have just scratched the surface on the education problem we face and there are so many other points that I would like to discuss but to avoid turning this into a novel, I'll stop here, look forward to you continuing this discussion in future posts.
Equality of opportunity is what we should strive for as long as we realize that equality of outcome is not what we want.

You have a great perspective there and should consider your own post! "Avoid turning this into a novel" : welcome to my world, where I have to stop writing at ~1000 words or else the post becomes a thesis.

Many employees do a better job when we trust them with the responsibility and let them get it done their own way.

You are absolutely right. Many people either employees, mates or leaders have the ability to spur themselves to success with little motivations. And this is produced when we allow them innovate, think and aspire to do things in the best possible way, that their mind can reach. Alot of talents are somehow buried by the stereotyped nature of major corporations.

At my home, we had some family visiting over the holidays who had not seen this new Star Wars movie yet

I have not seen it aswell. I probably might not. Since movies are not always on my list. Maybe in years to come I would be able to pass some times seeing movies too.

That's correct. Letting people innovate is very important. When we don't, our collective progress is much slower.

Deeps thoughts by Plato.
He maybe about masses living in the mode of Ignorance
Only a few try to challenge this , but the masses don't agree with them.
One such challenger was Socrates.
He dared to ask these questions and eventually cost his life.
But his Philosophy is still Alive with us Today!

Yes, great point! Socrates, in fact, told this story in Plato's account of it. Asking the right questions can be a form of rebellion, right?

Quite often it can be.
And the People who do Rebel can most often be crazy enough to stand by thier beliefs, no matter what the circumstances.
They would often value thier Philosophy over money or even thier life.
Such is thier Greatness or Craziness!

In the modern surrounding, "Prisoners who see only the shadows on the cave wall" can be understood as related to media control by the centers of power. I believe that this is what Martin Luther King was referring to.

I read an interesting note about the intellectual elitism in one of the Albert Ellis's books: we consider horrible to call someone a "nigger" or a "cripple" or "poor". On the other side, calling someone an "idiot" or a "fool" is much more socially acceptable.

"If workers are expected to be productive, we need them to see what they are doing and understand its importance." - There is a saying that a "NASA" janitor, when asked what does he do, replyed with "I'm helping people get to the moon".

I'm glad I've bumped into your post as we seem to like similar topics, I've followed you.

Cheers!

Absolutely. Whoever is in control of the media, government, large companies, and so forth, may have some strong influence over manipulating those puppets. GREAT addition about the NASA engineer; I love that!

It's true that complexity leads to less high performance workers, as i work for DoD, I get that impression

In government, it's probably even more true much of the time.

What bothers me is where this leads. It leads to exclusive groups, insider clubs, and the self-perpetuating belief that the elites who run the world are better than others

On the contrary, they are not . Elitism stresses more on social status and this is far from being healthy for any society because it would then mean that those without social status sucks and are therefore not good enough.

Exactly. I have no problem with elites (the people). It's elitism (the obstacle to everyone else's success) that needs to be corrected.

i really look forward to the day when people will have a more open mindset to change, being used to one's comfort zone hinders development.
humans should be spontaneous and ready to improve or change at any moment, because development is paramount and development brings change

That's a good thought. Maybe the cave could be seen as a comfort zone also. It's good to challenge ourselves and enlarge those boundaries.

exactly, the cave is the comfort zone and when presented with a new idea most people shun it just like the imprisoned cave men did. and that;s a really bad attitude to life.
change is constant and we all need to embrace it when it comes

I just finished reading, I will say one thing, this is a wonderful post in which you laid real food for your mind. Elitarism is present with humanity throughout its history, but even its recognition does not contribute to its complete eradication, but a change in that case is inevitable. We must work and create a balance, in which case the change will take place.
Socrates at one time asked these questions and was not afraid to talk about them, it was worth his life ...
I appreciate the fact that you have integrated classical sources and allegory to them, as well as modern references.
thank you for educating us about such problems and giving reason to think again

Your comment contains many truths! Balance is best and change is inevitable (hopefully, the good kind).

A very philosophical content with an understandable style. @donkeypong

this is one of my favorite from Morcheeba;

''...With the moonlight to guide you
Feel the joy of being alive
The day that you stop running
Is the day that you arrive

And the night that you got locked in
Was the time to decide
Stop chasing shadows
Just enjoy the ride...''

Oh, I like that. Very good!

good as your content! Or your content good as that. Both!

I completely agree with everything you say about the workers needing to understand the importance of the work they are doing, for me getting a job and doing the same routine over and over and coming out with the same or similar income at the end, just never seemed enjoyable for me. However, when I do my own projects, write on steem and do freelance work, I feel completely motivated and love doing it, plus the more effort I put, the better the reward.
Awesome post!

What a great testimonial! Thanks for the comment.

Netflix has been making great movies as well as cartoons and star war is the greatest movie that netflix has given!!!!!! Plato was one of the most famous philosopher who was very good at writting philosophy!!!!!

@donkeypong - Wow - what a masterful application of the changing times to Plato's cave allegory. Elitism existed even in the times of Plato and Socrates where some of these scholars themselves were the only ones privy to knowledge and had resources to study various things. No wonder that their allegories show elitism. Your skillful development of the theme of Plato's cave to link it to modern elitism of the 'management' and elitist 'privileged genders/races' is really inspiring.
Very interesting them, great observations of current scenario and lots of food for thought.
Thanks for sharing. Upvoted full.

Reading this passage “is that all the work that requires supervision is being outsourced to robots and algorithms."

Brings the thought of the on going machine learning process by AI's ( in the vision of Elon Mask and and Ray Kurzweil) where man and machine merges towards the Singularity. Its like the science fiction movie coming into reality. God bless us all.

Excellent post. The philosophy of Plato’s was Completely it deference. This is your informative post.A lot of information include here. Many historical subject you explain wonderfully .I have read your post. Its makes me huge pleasure.Actually present world divide many classes some are rich some are poor. Thanks to sharing your most valuable post.Really it is learning post.I like your post.I am waiting for your another post.

Great post, I found a lot different ideas coming together in this... and that alone supports my overall take away. I think the whole concept of decentralization is being brought into light more and more each day, and the benefits that it brings are becoming more apparent to society as a whole.
Of course, there will be resistance and there will be those that hold on to the weakening, structured supports of the old system, however I believe the surrendering of centralized power is inevitable. Technology is connecting all corners of the world, and bringing countless minds together, each with their own view of our shadowed world. This union of thinkers and innovators, freed from a "do-this, this way" philosophy, will continue to grow. And rather than being viewed as an elite group, I view this emerging decentralized society as the helping hands that will bring those still imprisoned, out of the grip of control in order to dance in the light.

I must say, it's a whole different interpretation of the Allegory of the Cave. For me it only alluded to human nature, how people are not aware of what they really are with the exception of a few. And when people become enlightened and preach to others of the reality of life, they are most often regarded crazy.

The world is ever changing and a lot of people are gaining deeper insights on the world. Educating people of all classes across social strat is a means to break the wheel of power by elitists (and capitalists) who hold power by means of knowledge and wealth.

Equality and equity should not be contained only in a utopian world but needs to be the norms.

I love how you compare Plato's philosophy into management. I never thought of it that way. Definitely looking forward to more of your insights.

Great post, thanks for sharing.

People need to wake up and understand that government, regardless of either party, serve the Elite. For decades, if not centuries, they have preyed on the weak. Nothing changes, the rich get richer no matter what handouts they tempt us with.

You mentioned politics and the ever-increasing, polarized caustic environment it fosters. Just turn on the doomsday news, in which media moguls are trying to keep up with the Shakespearian Donald and his acting.

I believe the answer lies in decentralization. For example, Cryptocurrencies are a prime example of the win-win philosophy behind decentralization. Well... the banks and the Fed aren't winning that battle.

As we ride this technological wave, AI, automation, and 'superintelligence' are helping us pave the way out of the cave.

Steem on everybody!

We can do a lot with decentralization. Not everything, but a lot.

It is amazing how much progress has been made. I can look back not even 5 years ago and it seems like a lot of the problems we have been improving were just accepted as being part of life. I don't think we should ever accept the ways things are as being perfect, because they never will be, but when you take a step back and see the progress we've made, I think it's okay to be proud of ourselves and our victories. I hadn't ever considered Plato's cave in the way that you did. Thanks for the perspective.

Yes, it's OK to be proud of the progress, but never to be satisfied that it's enough. We can continue to do better.

Awesome article combination between theories and great examples make us easy to understand, many thanks @donkeypong

Excellent post. The philosophy of plato 's was Compeletly it deference. very informative post. A lot of information include here. Many historical subject you explain wonderfully.I have read your post. Its makes me huge pleasure.

Great how you've linked it all to Plato's allegory of the cave.

Managers are crucial if employees do not want to work or don't enjoy their job one bit.
With poverty as the norm, an educated elite may be crucial for the welfare of society.

As we move away from extreme poverty and towards more humane, desirable work conditions, we may indeed start ditching rigid top->down power schemes.

True. The non-manager idea won't work in every situation, but it's something we can strive towards.

i think one should call force wielders in general elitist, as the darkside users are still part of the jedi religion just a subsect called sith that spawned alongside it, these two groups have controlled the galaxy and caused endless harm in the name of their causes. So they would be kinda like the illuminati which has various agendas regardless of the people.

Yes, good point about some Jedis being on the other side also.

Hello friends, The projects that I share as open source can help you or the people you want to help.
best regards greetings

just love this quote simply awesome. Thanks for sharing #donkeypong

very interesting read ..
although I agree with the many points you've mentioned specially about equality ..
somehow, that last line the electric master guy in the mocking jay of the hunger games said somehow clouds my belief and I quote "we should stop seeing each other as enemies"
I don't believe in one particular ism nor I side on one or any of them for I have understood that having a combi of the many of those are possible and most of all can bring the best in whoever could acquire them specially in balance
your shadow puppets .. is making me curious .. puppets .. not a fan of that word ...

Another reason to love Netflix - The brilliant idea!

Very interesting post. While it might be difficult to do away with elitism completely, finding and sustaining the right balance is more important

The Cave with the Rashed War was actually used to share with us. Thank you very much. I actually did not know much about it. Now, I read your post. And I like this about the war. I did not read stories and posts many blogs but in my post I can post any more Not

your article is very interesting. Very readable and easy to understand. The storyline is also very interesting so I am happy to read it to completion.

This kind of article I always wanted to read. In addition to readable, the essence of writing is also easy to understand. good work.

Popular culture is insisting that we move forward together. Giving everyone the same opportunities is not only the right thing to do. It also makes us stronger.

Exactly, that's my point of view too. When everyone is given equal opportunities, then we can complement weaknesses and be bound stronger by our strengths. Thanks for sharing.

Different classes are created which divide people based upon wealth, race, gender, and other factors that should be utterly meaningless in today’s world.

Exactly where will it lead us. It will only hurt us and cause the kind of dichotomy that would be very unhealthy for us all. Thank you sir for sharing.

It is really best post till now to me. You showed so much information in this post. I like the way you talk about the allegory cave and also the way you finish the post, was best part. I enjoyed your post. Thank you for sharing it on steem.

Interesting post you have put here @donkeypong. The main problem is think that i am more intelligent the you thats why superior than you.

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

Aren't people already have infinite opportunities but they miss them because they are just lazy asses.
And isn't it normal for someone to become an elite after overcoming his weaknesses, discrimination and all stereotypes? It's not like we live in a fairy tale. A lot of shit happening all around. Moving forward together holding hands is just a pipe dreams. Even though a lot of us want equality and a better life for everyone but... in the end, you will be left alone counting on your own strength.

People need to be good and work hard to get ahead. But if they are and do, they should not be held back.

The argument could be made, not that I concur with my fore-poster, that they (if we set aside that they are in chains or assume the chains to be inflicted on themselves) are responsible for their own demise.
If I recollect correctly Plato also considered that they may even kill the truth-teller for telling the truth after he saw the light, just because they do not believe him and think he's crazy.
That's quite heavy, I reckon, for how do you want to help them without showing them the truth and not letting them live a lie? As to someone who has seen the light it is obviously a must to lead the non-seeing onto the right path.

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

I’d rather trust someone with a good education to run my country or my company.

I would like to believe that sometimes even the best student won't be able to challenge or stand up to a more experienced individual whether he/she is educated or not.

The ability to respond to given situation is truly what makes one a leader and education won't give you this.

It comes from years of practice and failures not within a wall surrounded by four stones

That's absolutely true. I simplified the education aspect in the post, but you are correct that experience and skills can be just as important for some people.

Luke Skywalker proclaims (even in one of the trailers) that the Jedi must end. And who are the Jedi? An elitist group that holds the balance of the universe in their hands. They may be more good than evil, but is their elitism good? They hold their power exclusively.

The jedis are everywhere , here in this part of the world where I am at the moment they are called godfathers. Funny thing is they believe the world is theirs and theirs alone. It had become normal and I fear so much it might not stop.

But am optimistic because there are still good people although they are few but it better than none.

Gone fishing?
I think so.
While the workers who are to be applaused get little or no exposure.

Woke up to open Steemit and get your post as the start of the day. It was really well written and explained. And I'll be honest, this is the first time I'm hearing about this cave. Although I've never studied philosophy, I really like questioning this reality and our perception of it.

Thanks for making this article to enlighten us through yourself! Peace!

@donkeypong, Absolutely interesting to discuss topic indeed here. As my opinion, Plato's cave must entered to the school educations subjects. Many students don't know those history. We can take great human concepts from his character. Plato also talks about true education or true philosophy. In his opinion education is the process of learning spiritual knowledge so he even calls true education as true philosophy. He says that the learning power is the world of becoming and education is the process of learning called world of being. A man can learn up to a certain limit and after the limitation is crossed, he cannot learn more. This concept of learning process differs from one another. In the society has economy imbalances. Also our workplaces has this rule. Then some peoples really disappointing coz remind their situation. Absolutely yeah....Elitism hurts us all. I think don't need to the current community. All of problems happened Elitism i think. Look at any state. Desolate peoples always suffering from high wealth persons. Why is this happen? All peoples are humans and can stay live with freedom.
Finally I tell that, need to change these Elitism condition, It can change positive level. Firstly think and do individually. Then we can change anythings.

Completely agree with your points @donkeypong. Great explain from your topic. It must important to understand economic imbalance of peoples thinkable. It depends peoples thoughts. After long time ago it happened also currently it happen and future will happen. Its keep going without stopping. Must require to change humans mind. Need to provide positive mind. Thanks.

one of the puppet art originating from indonesia, thank you for sharing @donkeypong

A thorough and intriguing post. Chakhoyan is indeed offering wisdom and thinking outside the norm. It is worthwhile. Thanks!

One of the most intresting post on steemit you have swiming pool of ideas like u tell the story it is easy to understand but hard to determine
There is a deep meaning only few are understand
All peoples are read this but few of them would realy understand this.hope those guys who undersrand please apply this
Thank you

We need to train everyone else to expect better and then they'll need to apply it.

HHEHEHE, THIS PART GOT ME LAUGHING. I WONDER WHAT HE REALLY MEANT BY THIS

“The key to management is to get rid of the managers.”

Hay My name is baihaqi. What an amazing posting. I agree with you that the every person have change to have education and leader ship. And i think the elite person need to think all people in that cave. Mybe skme selection or train. And i agree with you we need to much manager. We just need a creative worker inspired and others. Thank you

Selection (whether it's self-selection or selection by society) and training definitely belongs in there somewhere.

Yea. Very agree with that argument

Netflix is amazing as always

Very good topic amd also video.
Like this video. Very enjoy.
Thanks dear for sharing....

Nice post

I fail to see the connection between elitism and SW having a girl lead.

Yes, there is more diversity nowadays concerning genders and race. Many times it is forced (there to be there). In extreme cases, it replaces one favored group for another (SJWs proclaiming being a gay black woman is better than a straight white male).

It should never be about what you are superficially (gender, sexual orientation, race) as it should be about how good you are at what you are doing.

If you read the post, it was all about merit, not such entitlement. People deserve the same opportunities.

Look at my chic post about the Konzhakov Marathon. I want to share this miracle with the whole world, but no one really looks. Share with your subscribers! For money, shit. I like to communicate!

nice post... i love this

Lol my daughter and I failed to make a substantive comment and are ashamed because we are affected by your cool name and steem power level lol. [real comment later on after they go bowling] Alx

PS: I’m Presently addicted to this to a degree I would say is somewhat detrimental, and NEED to get back to writing for the Minnows of the world, who are in need in a way that no whales here are.

I loved this - and I too was really excited to see the sheer diversity of the cast - and also saddened to see both implicit and explicit criticism of that diversity by many long time fans.

Depending on the angle from which you view it, society either feels like it is on the cusp of major positive changes, or a major negative regression. Both forces are at play simultaneously, which leaves us in the heart of the reputed old Chinese curse about "living in an interesting times."

wow interesting post @dongkeypong. Very useful for life. I like your post. I love to read your post akrena very add insight

We are moving forward but the old power structures and way of thinking are fighting back and are still strong: for example the rise of nationalism, extremism and fundamentalism. I truly wonder if we are not taking step backwards some times.

Use the force!

Nice drowing

This is a wonderful post in which you laid real food for your mind,Such Great stuff keep it up

I think that organizations needs kinda simbolic managers, to supervise and guide but not to boss around. It slow down the work. Elitism is why the world runs organized, but is why many are still kind of in a cave of shadows

Great analogy to compare the Jedi to elitists! Now I'm even more pissed at Luke for hiding when he was needed. Not only did he hide, he kept all of his knowledge for himself instead of sharing it with others.

Probably the teacher in me coming out there.

Education is the great equalizer in this world. Sadly not everyone has equal access to it. I sincerely hope that steemit can be a huge part of leveling the playing field and providing more people with access to education. Who knows what great thinkers are being held back just because of where they were born, how they look, or who their parents are (or aren't)?

Great post man. And you worked in Star Wars. I may cry.

It's not Yoda.

I believe in records and exposure, trusting one to do something good without past track record to me isn't the way, you don't trust some certain issues to someone who hasn't got the prerequisite, as much as everyone deserves a fair chance you have to work your way to make claim to that chance.

Very interesting article. The relationship that Netflix has identified in reduced utility of so many management positions reminds me of the Toyota Production System, aka "lean" productivity. Instead of wasting the time and effort to correct errors that WERE found by the management, they encouraged the workers closest and likely most experienced in the area to take responsibility for their part in making the consumer happy. This allowed for less bureaucracy and more autonomy that allows for everyone to feel invested in the quality assurance. The tech industry is a great community to observe the implementation and overall result of different business models as it has developed at lightening speed compared go ilder industries. I expect, with the aide of the established internet, cryptocommerce to be an even further compacted life cycle of companies and I am excited to see the new industries that arise from its eventual widespread adoption.

Hello @donkeypong. I really enjoyed reading your post. You've chosen very original and smart approach to this topic. I've been thinking about it myself too. I like your positive ending and to be honest until this day I also try to find clues to it, but everyday I more often I see just the opposite trend in our society. I'm starting to think that the cave may never get brighter and maybe that's the way it should be.

Thank you...
Follow me @harunbadilli

I saw the connection of the two topics mentioned above. From elitism of the past down to industrial movement or bias leadership in the present or some kind of labor abuse, both conveys how exactly the same the world before from now. Denying all opportunities that an ordinary man can gain while rich men become richer. But I am not a fan of Star Wars though. ✌️

interesting read... as a student at Harvard, and having worked remotely for a rich tech company (while living as a digital nomad), i've got some more thoughts on this... would love to discuss, if you'd like

I understand that people can be in charge themselves. That might make them more productive but I don't really think that the management era is going to end soon.

Keep up the great work = )
