A story about wishes

Three wishes, to be exact. And ixnay on the wishing for more wishes.
That's it. Three. Uno, dos, tres. No substitutions, exchanges or refunds.

Hello, good people of steemit!

Let's talk about wishes. Every holiday people make wishes. Every birthday, Christmas or New Year’s Eve, people make wishes especially zealously. Most people say that words tend to materialize because the Universe hears you. Utter a word into the abyss enough times, and one day the abyss may reply. I’ve found this to be only somewhat true. And I have proof.

Many years ago, after my first girlfriend and I broke up, once a week on Thursdays (I really don’t know why on this particular day, so don’t bother asking) I would wish for us to get back together. This was rather difficult as we were half a world away from each other, however, after 6 months, I gave up. I entered a university in Europe, thinking that a new country with new people would get my mind off of her. Within a couple of months, when I'd forgotten about my wish, I meet … her! In Europe! Alas, we broke up again (and this time for good), but my wish came true. The universe heard it. And this was the moment when I realized that “be careful what you wish for” wasn’t an idle threat.

My next wish was to find a girl who would fully understand and accept me, while being pretty, smart and homey. I wanted to feel loved (as any sane person would) and I promised to myself that I would cherish and make her happy, too. In about 4 years of constant wishing, I met my wife. She even understands my weird jokes (or makes a good impression of that). In any case, my wish was once again heard by the Universe and it came true.

Nevertheless, there was a dream I had for more than a decade. I fell in love with the piano while listening to Beethoven as a child, and ever since I’ve always wanted to own and play a piano. Since the age of 10 to 21 I wished for the instrument on every possible occasion. My parents would promise to buy one after I’ve graduated high school and then University. I did. But nothing happened.

So, one day I just went to the nearest music store and bought myself a nice piano that I still play today. It’s been five years since I’ve purchased it, it has traveled with me from the Netherlands to the UK, from the UK to Kazakhstan, and further within my country from town to town, and it still warms my heart and soul to this very day.

My point is: sometimes the Universe may be too busy to hear all your wishes and prayers. Those are the times when you have to take matters into your own hands.
