The day my life changed forever.

in life •  7 years ago

As you may or may not know, I am now married. I lived in Chile. How did this happen?
I'm glad you asked.

It was early 2016 when I bought my passport to visit my brother who lived in Chile with his wife and her family. I had planed to visit in October, but I decided I couldn't wait and decided to visit for his birthday in May. I threw in my two weeks vacation at work and headed down.

The view from Lago Llanquihue. Little did I know what I would do on the left volcano...

While I was there, my sister-in-law's sister (I'll let you process that for a moment.) was looking rather cute to me. We didn't say much to each other, but I couldn't keep my eyes off her. While also being very careful she didn't notice. We talked once or twice about Parks and Rec, it turns out we were both binge watching it. So after the 2 weeks the trip was over...I was super bummed. I was ready to go back before I even boarded the plane. I came back to TN and got back in the groove of working, when one week later I received a message from a freshly created Facebook account. "So, what episode of Parks and Rec are you on?"

Me:

After talking for a week, I told her I liked her, and vice versa. We talked every single day and skyped every week. (Hence why I have this laptop i'm typing on right now.) A month or so later, I asked her to be my girlfriend. She said yes. By this time it was almost July. Obviously I needed to get to Chile like..right now. After deciding on a time to go and selling everything, I decided to leave Tennessee on September 2nd. I arrived on September 3rd.

Funny story I still kick myself for.

When I arrived, her and her family (including my brother) was outside the glass doors waiting on me. Because my flight was delayed, I thought my luggage made it to the airport before me. So when I got out of the doors, I was so nervous I went right past all of them and asked the worker about my luggage. Afterwards I was super embarrassed. Funny now though!

Then, the moment came. @drobinson and @alovelymess got the hug we waited (what seemed like forever) for.

That moment my life was forever changed. I knew right then and there, no matter what country, state, or region we lived in. It didn't matter. Houses come and go, my home is her arms. Always and forever.

In February 2017 I proposed on the left volcano in the first picture, and we have been happily married since April.

Marriage isn't always easy, but if you work through differences and communicate without keeping it bottled up, it makes things a lot easier.

Congrats! So amazing how a simple trip to visit someone can end up changing your life forever! I had a similar experience, which I also wrote about here on steemit.

I am a Canadian and married to a Dane. I went from preparing to pack my bags and leave home for Canada (I was studying in Denmark at the time) to taking those packed bags and moving in with my now husband.

I love how fate sometimes throws the best curveballs! Congrats and long happy life to you two.
