1981 Rocks On. My favourite Christmas album.

So where were you on Christmas Day 1981? On second thoughts, don't answer that.

I'm totally showing my age here, but on Christmas Day in 1981 I spent a lot of time in our lounge-room listening to my brother's newly unwrapped album 1981 Rocks On. It's not a Christmas album, but because it was played so much over that summer break, it takes me there. There were a couple of other cracking presents that year, including Dragonquest (I've written about this before. Best. Game . Ever.) and GDW's Imperium.

But I love this album. So much so that it has become one of my creative muses. All I need to do is put it on and I am in creativity land.

What are my favourite songs? All of them. With the possible exception of Sheena Easton's Modern Girl. But I even appreciate that one for its small contribution to feminism.

But my favourites are Ungaurded moment, and the new romantic tracks Planet Earth, To cut a long story short, and Vienna. Closely followed by Kids in America, Bette Davis Eyes, Cool Workd and fek it, all of it.

So here I am in the hotel in Rotorua relaxing - just me and my shingles (and don't they suck?) - listening to 1981 Rocks On. And suddenly everything is good again.

Hope you're well.
