Make-believe: the importance of play for adults.

Every day my daughter conjures up new ideas and plots and stories and scenarios - and then she plays in lands of make-believe for hours.

I have made it my mission to engage in this play as much as I can. Sometimes I'm not welcome - it's for kids, for her and her friends. But when she's at home and it's just us hanging out, joining in can lift the game to a whole new level.

And I need it.

I need to engage with her on her level.

Because I - and I'm sure most parents these days - seem to be spending ever increasing amounts of time asking my child to engage with me on an adult level, on adult issues.

Rules. Homework. Chores. Brush your teeth. Eat your veggies. Make your lunch for school. No TV. Turn off your iPad. And do it all now.

I see play as a chance to demonstrate to my daughter that's it's not all about me, and that life can and should (indeed must) be fun sometimes.

She shouldn't need my encouragement to play. But she has it. And so does Matilda (pictured).

Enjoy your weekend, and if you can, make some time for play. It's worth it 🙂.

I grew up imagining universes to life, so I could relate. Plus, I even finished writing a story just by looking at the world through a child's eyes, so I can doubly relate. Man, fostering your child's imagination is a really cool thing to do. I bet she would really thank you for it when she grows up, whatever path in life she takes :)

Hope so! Thanks jedau

Thanks for the post. Very sincere. These are exactly the moments that remain in the memory when the children grow up. Children grow up, parents grow old. And we must live in such a way that after years we do not regret that we missed the joint time.

Yep - you nailed it :-)

Playtime - the enemy of the state.

The older we maintain playfulness, the more difficult too take serious the silliness of control freaks.
They are so boring!.
Happy, joyful adults are just impossible to control.

Pesky fun will not be tolerated. regards, your slave masters
