President George H.W. Bush posthumously awards Jesse Owens the Congressional Gold Medal (1990)

If you're unfamiliar with who Owens is, he gained international fame by winning 4 gold medals at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, Germany. He was the most successful athlete at the games.

What makes this such a historic and popular feat is that Owens was a black man competing in Germany. This was during the time of when Hitler was in power and boasted the "Aryan Supremacy." Owens is credited with breaking down Hitler's ideas of superiority and breaking color barriers in general.

Today, the Jesse Owens Award is USA Track and Field's highest accolade for the year's best track and field athlete. ESPN has ranked him as the 6th greatest North American athlete of the 20th centiry and in 1999 he was on the six man shortlist for Sports Personality of the Century which BBC creates. Owens passed away on March 31, 1980.

Lady Gaga was born (1986)

Today, Lady Gaga, or by her real name Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, celebrates her 32nd birthday. She is most notably a musician, although has had a few acting successes and is a strong advocate for the LGBT movement and her Born This Way Foundation.

Whether you know her from her hit songs like "Just Dance" and "Poker Face,", her eccentric and sometimes questionable outfits she has work, her acting roles in American Horror Story or her performance at Super Bowl 51 in the United States, Gaga has made quite a name for herself.

Despite being known as a performer, Gaga is a strong supporter of the LGBT social movement and works with her non-profit organization the Born This Way Foundation, which helps promote and grow youth empowerment and fights against bullying.

Happy Birthday!

Dwight D Eisenhower passes away (1969)

Dwight D. Eisenhower, or Ike for his nickname, was the 34th president of the United States from 1953 to 1961. During World War 2, he served as a 5 star general. It is possible that he could have served more terms as president, but he was the first to be limited by the 22nd amendment, which limited the terms of a president to 2.

Eisenhower is most notably known for his implementation of the Interstate Highway System, something we probably take for granted as we use it quite often. He was also involved in numerous foreign policy systems and agendas in countries like Korea, China and Taiwan. He was also credited with creating NASA as a civilian space agency amid the "Space Race" with the Russians.

Soon after he left office, high opinions of him changed to a president who didn't do much and constantly played golf. This idea wasn't helped by the fact that his successor was a young and rigorous John F. Kennedy.

Eisenhower passed away on the morning of March 28th of congestive heart failure. Nixon eulogized him saying he was "truly the first citizen of the world."
