Who To Tell Your Moving Home, 28 Jun 2017 -Ed Davis
- Scroll directly to the bottom of this guide for a full list of people to contact
I remember when I first moved home – everything went quite well until I realised I needed to inform everyone that I was changing address. For some reason it completely left my mind and I totally forgot about it.
Fortunately, that isn’t going to happen again because here at Davis and Mac we have created a free checklist that you can use to make sure that you have covered all of the important notifications before you move home.
Our guide on who to tell you’re moving includes the smallest detail in the following areas:
Utility Providers
Financial Services
Healthcare
Education
Motoring
Personal
WHY TELL PEOPLE THAT YOU’RE CHANGING ADDRESS?
For some industries, you can get in some serious trouble by not informing anyone of your change of address. For example, not telling the DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency) that the address on your photo card driving licence has changed could land you with an unpleasant £1000 fine.
As well as fines – you could be handed motoring points and even bans.
Other industries such as banks and building societies need to be aware of your new address too, and they should be one of the first that you inform.
Other businesses and organisations that you should inform immediately of your address change include:
Water Supplier
Gas Supplier
Electricity Supplier
Telecoms/Telephone Provider
Mobile Phone Network
Post Office
Internet Provider
TV Companies
TV Licence
These are the types of companies that you will traditionally use everyday – not necessarily on the phone on the support line but certainly through the services that they provide.
Advice for water, gas and electricity – when you are contacting your suppliers, make sure that you have an accurate, up to date metre reading.
This will help you significantly when arranging your final bill and making a fair payment. We have heard so many horror stories of couples and families that haven’t taken a metre reading, only to find out that they have been paying the new homeowners bill for the last 3 months!
A great way to make sure that you focus solely on arranging your affairs is to hire a man and van London to assist with the removals and packing.
TELECOMS AND INTERNET PROVIDERS
Just as you would have with the gas and electricity provider – it’s important to contact your broadband and telephone agent.
The last thing you need is to have your Internet connection cut off because you have cancelled a payment before you needed to. Alternatively, if you haven’t informed then of the new address and location – you may not have the same quality of service that you have at your old property.
The most common Internet and telephone providers in the UK tend to be:
SKY
British Telecoms
Talk Talk
Plusnet
Make sure that they are aware of your move weeks before you start planning or getting items out of the house.
FINANCIAL ADDRESS CHANGES
It’s important to update your address for your bank and building society (if you have one) as soon as you can.
In most cases it doesn’t take long at all and can usually be done in less than 10 minutes over the phone.
Here is a list of financial organisations that you should contact and notify of your move and new address:
Banks
Building Society
Credit Card Companies
Council Tax
National Savings & Premium Bonds
Your Employer
Insurance Companies (Life, Home and Car)
Pension Scheme
Inland Revenue
Solicitors (If You Have One)
Electoral Roll (Eligibility to Vote)
Believe it or not, some of these financial companies can actually have a serious implication on your ability to receive credit – should you ever need it.
In most scenarios, a homeowner will certainly require credit to purchase a home and maybe even a vehicle. A mortgage and finance on a car is not uncommon – However, if the above organisations have the incorrect details, it can look bad on your credit score and prevent you from gaining a mortgage.
It’s best to employ a removals company in London to help manage your move for you, leaving you with plenty of time to handle your address changes and personal documentation.
Banks and Building Societies
PRIVATE HEALTHCARE AND MOTORING
We touched briefly on motoring and the importance of changing your details with the DVLA at the earliest opportunity.
We’re not just saying this for the fun of it. You really do need to ensure that you get your healthcare changes organised. The last thing you need is to need an urgent appointment with your GP only to discover that they have the incorrect details and are not able to book a visit.
Make sure that you contact and update your address for the following:
Doctor
Dentist
Optician
As well as all of these motoring organisations to ensure that your car is well protected:
DVLA
Breakdown Cover Providers
Vehicle Registration
Vehicle Insurance
DON’T FORGET THE FAMILY AND FRIENDS
Now that all of the real serious points have been covered, it’s important to make your family and close friends aware of your new address.
In this section we will discuss the personal areas of your home that you need to make sure are up to date for moving day.
Remember to cover and contact all of the following (where applicable):
Friends and Family
Subscriptions
Milk Deliveries
Newsagents
Sports Clubs
Library Cards
Schools and Colleges
London properties
