Winning talent shows and trying to win at training my voice... #southafricanstruggle

Music has been a big part of my life since I was in the 5th grade.

It started when my Dad bough a small electronic keyboard and progressed from there. I started lessons for piano in that year and found it quite amazing at first. I also started to enjoy playing guitar when I got into high school because I had a friend who started drum lessons and so we began a small band. We decided to eventually call ourselves "the Bonds of Earth" and even won a talent show by playing the song, "What's my age again" by Blink 182. I, with my instrumental experience, was volunteered to sing as I was deemed to be the best of the bunch at it. It was quite funny actually, we made quite a big mistake in the song on stage but it worked to our benefit because we brought it back like professionals. Turns out that's what they were looking for and so we won.

Here's a really bad recording of it, its the only one I know of. Credit goes to my friend Christopher Van Deelen who posted it.

I've fallen out of touch with music since going to London but am trying to get back into with a particular focus on my voice which is turning out to be tougher than I thought. Because you are a human instrument, you can never sound just as good from day to day and it gets really frustrating, and sometimes discouraging because I'm impatient. But it's like any muscle, the more you exercise it, the more control and strength you have in it. The one thing that give me the most hope is a video of Ed Sheeran. I watched an interview where he plays a clip of his singing when he started out and it was pretty bad. But look at him now, he just says as you work at it, it comes right. So I'm really excited to see how my voice will progress!
