So I've been not using shampoo when washing my hair for quite a bit of time now, ever since I was informed about the no-shampoo (yes, that's what that is short for) movement by someone at work. I asked on musing
if anyone knew about it but it looks like the few people looking at the question did not know or did not answer.
The idea behind it, according to the Wikipedia article, is that when using shampoo products one of the effects is that your body will compensate for the oils that the shampoo strips out of your hair, leading to very oily hair if you do not wash your hair for even a day. And by only washing with water, the idea is that this will normalize after a few months, and your hair will maintain a natural amount of oiliness.
The amount of money you save by not buying shampoo therefore can be used to buy STEEM instead! (Half joking).
I started doing this around mid-September, so it's been two months. And I feel like it is working. At the beginning, I really could feel that my hair was just very oily after a few days of water only washing. But it started to get better. At the very least, after washing and drying the hair, it doesn't feel so uncomfortable. In the current state, it still feels pretty oily after a day of not washing, but now I at least don't feel a need to go back to shampoo.
I'll let you know if that changes, but I hear from others that have tried it that it continually gets better over time. The feedback I've gotten lately in terms of how my hair looks is that it looks like there's a natural amount of hair product in my hair that is giving it some shape and shine. So kind of a two-for-one, I don't need gel either!
It also helps to get a bit of a hair cut if it is getting uncomfortable (at least I did so in the first week). As the old steem adage goes, Make like an SBD and haircut! (This may not make sense if read in times of prosperity)
Anyway, I felt the need to share my experience in case anyone else was curious about it. Anyone else out there do this?

I have read about this but was under the impression that folks would sometimes rinse with vinegar (though I am not remembering why). Do you do anything like "dry shampoos" (which might be useful for the consistently oily type of person).
I have considered going that direction of not using product anymore. I might just keep my hair in braids. :-) Thanks for the inspiration @eonwarped!

I have heard that before too and I'm not sure. Someone I talked to said not to do it (vinegar) but I don't remember why. And recommended some natural conditioners but I also don't remember or use that.

This makes sense now. If you use baking soda to "wash" your hair then the vinegar is the rinse that also is supposed to condition. I thought they went together!!
I wash my hair maybe once a week but I get a slightly itchy scalp after about 5 days. Did you notice any issues initially?

Yeah initially it definitely felt pretty oily and itchy. Now still slightly but still ok. Oh interesting about the combination... I don't think I'm going to try that though :) . Sounds like if you anyway do once a week it might be easier to adjust? Not sure.

I didn't know that was a movement. How behind the times of them.
Yes, not used any shampoo for I think around a decade now. Not sure anymore why I started not using it anymore but I vaguely seem to remember it was because I had peers who said it's better when babies' hair is washed naturally without and they themselves also didn't use it.
No, it doesn't smell. Yes, it softens. No need for any chemicals to obtain naturally soft and shiny hair like they claim to deliver.

Haha sounds like similar circumstances. Good to have some reinforcing anecdotes!

Prince Harry was a no shampoo advocate not so long ago @eonwarped. But then he met the missus and that was the end of that

Hmmm, what about us long-haired ones who want to stay fluffy, silky and nice-smelling?

I’ve heard of this, but hadn’t met anyone who tried it! I think a lot of people used vinegar or baking soda instead. My hair gets so oily after not being washed for a few days, I don’t think I’d make it long enough for it to start working. An interesting concept for sure.
