in life •  7 years ago

Since tuition fees for international students are really high in the United Kingdom (more information here). Therefore, @Hellouni is providing some tips on how abroad student can receive international scholarships, save and earn money at the same time as studying.

Scholarships

Most of the Universities in the UK are providing individual scholarships just for international students. These annual scholarships are usually varying from £3,000 to even £10,000. However, United Kingdom's universities only provide these scholarships for students with significant academic achievement and financial needs. There might be some universities who will provide the student with scholarships because of his/her performance in sports or music etc. @HelloUni is recommending these websites for scholarship search: http://www.scholarship-search.org.uk/ https://www.facebook.com/isnpo.org/ http://www.scholars4dev.com/ Thus, for the upcoming student, the best thing to do is to find scholarship requirements on each university's website.

Average living costs are varying according to student’s preferences. For example, every upcoming student needs to decide where he/she wants to live (campus accommodation or renting a flat), transport options (underground, bus or bicycle) and eating the budget. @UCAS is providing some of the general costs below: £25 to £30 – a typical weekly food bill £22.30 – seven day Oyster travel card on the London underground, Docklands Light Railway and London Overground (includes 30% student discount) £6.55 – peak hour cinema ticket £5 – English breakfast at a café or pub £2.80 – premium take-away sandwich.

Saving tips

Make sure to benefit from various discounts by using your student card. For example, an International Student Identity Card (ISIC) offers up to 40,000 discounts worldwide. However, among UK students it is more popular to have a @UniDays account as well as the @NUS extra card. For @Unidays discount, you just need to simply register at their website. Whereas @NUS cards are usually issued in university's student union office.

Part-time job

Students of the UK universities are eligible to work up to 20 hours per week, however, @HelloUni warns you to check your visa requirements if you are coming to the UK from outside EU. For example, some visas and study permits will only allow you to work on-campus in University area. However, it does not matter where you will get a job, you have a full right to receive a National Minimum Wage. Note: before you start applying for part-time jobs, be sure to receive your National Insurance Number.
