An adventure with my dad: Taking him to the cinema for a night out.

in life •  7 years ago  (edited)

The only time me and my dad ever went to the cinema together was in 1993.

The movie Cliffhanger (Sylvester Stallone) was released and we went to a little Cinema in the city of Steenwijk in the Netherlands to watch it.

I was 9. (Movie age restriction must not have really applied back then. But I turned out alright in the end).

What I do remember about that visit is the movie itself (which was awesome) and that half way through the movie there was a pause. So people could get a drink.

The cinema in Steenwijk was so small that they actually asks the attendants if they wanted to have another drink or proceed with the movie.

I just can not imagine this in today's world.

I went to the cinema not long ago with Bianca and saw a trailer for this movie called 'Wind River'. While watching I thought this is something that my dad would love to see.

I asked him if he wanted to see it and he was shocked!

Who in their right mind would go to Rotterdam after six in the evening! (my dad is not a big fan of the city, lol).

I'd said I'll drive and make sure he be home before 9. The movie started at 18:00.

After some convincing, he accepted.

He now considered it a great adventure.

We took the car around 17:00 to drive to Rotterdam South which takes about 15 minutes. He had not been there for 20 years.

He was in awe how much it has changed. (it used to be really poor and dirty, it went through a nice modernisation).

Of course we were to early but we left early because my dad said that otherwise maybe we will miss it.

We had a coffee and a small bite at a cafe before the movie started.

Inside the cinema I bought 2 beers for us.

After the commercials and trailers the movie started at 18:20. It was amazing (no spoilers don't worry).

About 15 minutes into the movie I'm hearing a familiar crackling sound.

I look to my left and see my dad has started to smoke his electric cigarette while sipping his beer.

We are surrounded by people.

I laugh internally, I let him have his fun and if we are going to be kicked out that would be a nice story in it self.

We made it to the end safe and sound!

He loved it!

He said that he forgot how big the screen actually is in the cinema! and the sound! It's like you are inside the film!

I agree. The cinema is where movies shine. No TV, whatever the size can beat it in my mind.

I took us home after and made some dinner.

He thanked me for a great night. I loved it too.

I'm grateful I could do this with him (how simple it might be) 24 years after we first went together.

Absolutely love this story! Life does not get any better than spending quality time with our loved ones. You created a memory together that both of you will remember forever. You simply can't beat that.

When your dad lit up his electronic cigarette, it put a big smile one my face. Really glad nobody said anything and just let him relax and enjoy the movie. I really enjoy reading your blog because you're always living life. Going out and experiencing and doing things. Hats off to you brother! Have a great night!

"The cinema in Steenwijk was so small that they actually asks the attendants if they wanted to have another drink or proceed with the movie." Lol, when dinosaurs still ruled the earth.

when dinosaurs still ruled the earth.

LOL! hahaha

that's cool, i've never gone to a movie with just my dad! the last movie i recommended to my Dad when he visited was "Rams", it was on netflix, a quiet movie about sheep farmers, kind of the rural settings he likes... he didn't like it, but he's basically a bit contrarian/cynic so no surprise. glad you had a good time.

Quality father son time is important! Glad you both had fun :)

I don't enjoy as much of the stuff posted on social media as i wish i did. But im really glad I follow you. I really enjoy your posts!

Thanks @exyle

😁

Thank you for saying that.

Good quality time spent with your dad m8! He really looks like happy man!

Full UP Vote from me on this one @exyle. This brought a slight tear to my eyes. I never had this kind of relationship with my Father. If I could have done something like this when he was alive I would have jumped at the chance to do it more than once every 24 years. Cherish and honor your parents it is what makes memories we can carry on forever........

We do more things. Movies are just a really rare exception, lol :)

@exyle looks like your dad is doing much better, prayers go out for him It's that your taking him out and getting exercise.

He is doing much better indeed.

fantastic post @exyle, i am glad to see you going to a cinema with your dad and that's great because these little enjoyments are real stress releaser and a person also feels so fresh and it is very important in life, your dad seems to enjoy a lot the movie with his electronic cigarette, really enjoy reading your blog because you always live the life, enjoy your time and have a cheerful week ahead, thanks for sharing

Thank you. Have a great rest of the week yourself!

It awesome to spend time with our parents as we both get older. Setting aside time for them can sometimes be overlooked, but the memories shared tougher are the things that you cherish later in life when you are older and miss them. Thank you for the heartwarming post :)

completely cherish this story! Life does not show signs of improvement than investing quality energy with our friends and family. You made a memory together that both of you will recall until the end of time. I truly appreciate perusing your blog since you're continually living. Going out and encountering and getting things done. Caps off to you sibling! Have an awesome night!

Thank you, man!

A great adventure @exyle, I see that you are well rested and spent time. It's nice that you love your father and do not regret it, there is nothing for him. It deserves respect!

@exyle - Oh Sir, you are a good son. Lovely experience both of you had there.

+W+ [UpVoted & ReSteemed]

That sounds a pretty time spent between son and dad and it will be a memory for both of you

that must be an amazing experience. No wonder your dad is so happy after 24 years know. Nice to hear that you still remember the old day's that you have spend with your dad. Now a days most of the children do not remember their past, they just thinking they know everything.
Very interesting to read and I enjoyed it
Cheers!

@exyle,
You did a great job friend! Emotionally I like what you did! And yeah it could be a great story again - "I laugh internally, I let him have his fun and if we are going to be kicked out that would be a nice story in it self." :D
You are the guy of year :D

Cheers and have a nice day dude~

That's great exyle! 1993 that was a long time ago, glad to see you guys bonding! Great post and best wishes from @kenentertainment!

Enjoy with your father. I lost mine and i wish to have more time to stay with him.

Such a sweet story to share with everyone. A little bit disappointed you 2 didn't get kicked out. You would have laughed all the way home :)

What a nice evening together with your father. I am glad you had this time together with lovely memories. You should do it more often. Once in 24 years is a long time...

Father, son bond. Nice. I like that you are spending time with your father, you don't see that very often with men these days. God bless your father.

That's such a great story. You will always be glad you had that time together!

I'm really grateful in your effort @exyle..
Because they sacrificed their lives for us.. Today we have achieved this status because of them.. Therefore, we should spend our little time to make them happy.. Really great work @exyle..
Also, I'm trying to arrange Travel to India for my father.. Because it is a big dream of an every Buddhist to visit the Lord Buddha's Birth Place.. It was late because of economic problems.. But one day I will..

Such a lovely story. Thank you for sharing it, @exyle.

In my town, they was also a cinema. Well, it is still there, but just as a theater -as always has been-. They also plaed some movies in 2 parts. The longest ones.

One day the played the second part before the first one. Today it is funny to remember that!

I am sure your father feels very proud of you doing that.

Nice story. I wasn't even born in '93 but I wish I can go in a cinema like the one you described.

'Who in their right mind would go to Rotterdam after six in the evening! (my dad is not a big fan of the city' In my head I hear him say that sentence. lol
But fantastic that you two went there together!!

Haha, I bet you can! :)

Great to share an evening with the 'old man'. I can't remember ever going to the cinema with my dad. Glad you both enjoyed!

Nice adventure, such simple pleasures are what makes life worth living. Wishing you and your dad all the best.
