Okra and ground beef with rice and beans.

in life •  7 years ago

I just got back from my second gym session this week.

On the positive side, that is already a fifty percent increase over last week!

On the negative side, it was a leg day and my goodness it hurts.

I should probably have taken it a little easier.

But the most amazing feat is that Steemfat3 is getting some traction.

I can feel it.

What also helped was the meal Bianca and I had today.

Ever since I met her I have been introduced to some amazing new food.

Okra is one of them and probably one of the more bizarre ones. (remember: I grew up with potatoes and mostly spinach, my sister wouldn't eat anything else)

It's delicious but it has this slight slimy property that I find really interesting :)

Let's cook!

Snapseed 10.jpg

Ingredients: Okra, rice, ground beef, garlic and a red onion. (beans not in the pic).

Snapseed 3.jpg

Cut the garlic and onions and put them in a skillet with a little oil and salt. This blue skillet I bought second hand online about 2 years ago. It's one of my favorite pans. It's cast-iron. Will last a lifetime. No reason to buy one new.

Snapseed 2.jpg

After a couple of minutes add the ground beef and brown it.

Snapseed 5.jpg

Snapseed 6.jpg

While the beef is cooking cut the Okra. Take off the top and cut in small rings.

Snapseed 4.jpg

When you are done, it looks like this.

Snapseed 8.jpg

Add the okra to the pot and cook and stir it for at least 15 minutes.

Snapseed 12.jpg

Snapseed 7.jpg

End Result: Ever since I tasted Okra for the first time not long ago I love it. Especially prepared in this way. It's flavorful and it has this cool texture with some sliminess (I don't how to word this so it sounds better). We added rice and beans to the dish. It's simple, yet healthy and yummy.

Dude, leg day is awesome!!! Especially the day after, when u wake up to go to the toilet and your legs give you a error 404- legs not found, and u can't move

LOL!!

Sounds awesome. Have you ever tried Bison? Great way to get the most out of red meat, fight cancer, and keep lean. Keep it up man.

Most green vegetables are not tasting good in the mouth.
Okra is one of them.
The health benefits is huge and anything with meat should be good to eat.
I have to say. The simple way you cook will make me cook now.
I did start last week and I intend to keep it going.
Keep on steemin’

The okra seriously caught my attention. I really miss having okra. I grew up in SE Texas right on the border of Louisiana. We often had okra in the grocery store. We would cut okra up and coat it in lower and cornmeal mix then fry it. I now live in Arizona an no okra here. I haven't tried it with ground beef and onions. If I can get my hands on some okra, I'll have to try it that way.

Erm.... I've not really tried this okra combination before (using okra to cook this way).

I only use okra for preparing okra soup which I eat with garri or fufu - ask any Nigerian about it lol 😂

But as a lover of good food, I'll definitely try this one out cus it really looks yummy and I'm salivating already.

Thanks for sharing this wonderful food and cooking story.

Happy Steeming

Hahahahaha. Yea, that's the one we know. Had it for dinner today. Well, its always good to learn new system, you never can tell.

Excuse me if I am really ignorant, but I cook for a living, and I got curious, and was looking into garri and fufu recipes, when it seemed to me that it was like bland "mashed potatoes", but then it occurred to me, this is like an edible eating utensil isn't it, Like using chips to eat a dip?

For me Okra is a totally new ingredient that I never used before Bianca introduced it to me. I only know this way. Okra soup sounds nice I'll look it up!

OK. Try it and you'll love it

Maybe when you are on vacation

You can visit Nigeria

I would prepare a nice Okra soup with eba (cassava flakes that is colloidal from the addition of hot water) maybe beef and smoked fish
And bottle of cocacola to wash it down

Oh man, that sounds yummy!

Great dish. Looks like a delicious dinner.

If you want to be hard-core and get some more protein and fiber you should try brown rice :P every little bit of protein helps
Haven't heard of okra before, but it looks very healthy.

I'm really agree with you ;
#FOLLOWBACK for all steemer .
Lets support together @hansal

begging for followers is not cool and will get you flagged.

Steemit is a great platform whereby you get to meet people and their different interesting culture. In Nigeria we use Okra basically to make soup. Its like an abominable act to mix it up with something else. I think i like what it looks like! Maybe I'm gonna try it out and tell people i got it from steemit, courtesy @exyle. There's dynamism in culture.

I'm Canadian, I've always eat okra raw because it get slimy when cooked. Is it enjoyed raw where you are?

Hahaha... Different stroke for different folks! We enjoy it when cooked because of it slimy nature. Though I've seen people eat it raw because of their voice, singers particularly but, its a foreign culture. Nice meeting you @zastels

Hi @exyle ,

Ziet er weer geweldig uit man.. top!
Ik vind het echt knap van je dat je iedere dag zulke mooie blogs kan maken en geweldig hoe je dat doet.

Fijne avond en tot morgen!

UPVOTED & RESTEEMED

Thanks!

Mehn @exyle we eat okra a lot in Nigeria and I would say these okra you used ain't fresh. The fresh ones are often pure green and soft. We use it to make okra soup and we call the soup "draw soup" coz it's extreme slimmy.

I am suprised hearing you having okra for the first time but I guess it's coz you don't find much of it over there like you would here so ur excused (lolzz) . The dish looks quite appetizing. Mind if I have a taste?

Yeah, it's not a vegetable you would find in a regular supermarket here. I'll try to look out for 'fresher' okra next time. I had no clue :)

Good, good! The only thing left now is to keep doing it every week and don't even think of not going to gym! Just do it. I'm rooting for you man.

Oh well. This is the first time I have seen okra use in this way. Over here we used okra mostly in prepare soups. I had an okra and vegetable soup for dinner today. But I like trying new things and all the ingredients listed there are present here. Can roasted fish be used in place of grounded beef?

Okra soup in Brazil is known as Caruru, I believe okra was brought to Brazil by Africans. That's a really special vegetable in brazilian cousine. :)

There are so many health benefits to okra! I tried it for the first time not that long ago also, and I was pleasantly surprised. I was pretty convinced that I wouldn't like it. But I do! I'm going to make it your way one of these days soon.

You have done wrong by showing this so delicious dish :D
In Pakistan its 1:17 Am, And from now I'm so much carving :D
My mouth start mouthwatering lol xD

sorry :)

Have to know are you taking your own photos or getting help? I've done a few food posts recently and taking photos while cooking is a little challenging.

The first time I had Okra was in the South where they fry everything. Was at a pot luck lunch thing with a group that my Wife's Grandma belonged to and there was a table of food. Each person brought a dish or two to share and a couple of the men grilled the meat.

The table of food was basically a sea of brown as most all the side dished were fried. Was an interesting experience.

But I did try Okra for the first time there as I really had no idea what I was grabbing...it really all looked the same. Since then I've had it a few other ways and all are better then fried, but it was a good way to try something new.

I take them myself most of the time. It can be a hassle while cooking. I never had fried okra, only in the way we prepared it today.

You do a great job with it. If you ever have a minute to check out what I have done and give a pointer or two I'd appreciate any guidance. Not begging for an upvote, just sincerely I'm looking to improve and grow my blogging skills so just a comment with your thoughts would be great.

If you like friend stuff it's worth trying once. The ones had were deep fried and really not something I would consider cooking myself. But have considered trying to make them pan fried with less breading. Think the flavor of the okra would come through better.

I recently fell in love with okra. Cooked with tomatoes and served with rice. Yum yum yum. I love that. Your recipe looks good. Some meat with okra. That’s what my dish needs

I am a nigerian and ive never seen okra prepared in this manner
I will try this out someday...it looks delicious
Ive voted '@blockbrothers for witness
and I dont regret that because the app STEEMIFY has made steemit easier for me. The best part of this application in my opinion is the fact that it shows me the percentage of upvote I get from individual steemains. I certainly do not regret downloading it and its free too.

FRIED Okra!
NOT boiled. I purely hate to bite into something and it slithers awaaaaay....and slimes down my throat.

The recipe sound good except for that. Remember FRIED (with corn meal) NOT Boiled (Okra and squash)

lol! I like it this way too but fried okra is on the list now. Looking forward to prepare it.

You have no idea how much I love rice and beans!!!!

I feel you man! I never eat it much until Bianca got me hooked. I love it now. We eat it all the time.

I would pay you steem to cook for me man. It’s hard to cook after work and getting the kids and everything. You always seem to cook good food tho. Keep it up man

I think it is a "Le Creuset". With those pans you can cook great. I am very curious how Okra tastes. What can you compare it to?

It is that brand. Can't compare okra to anything else to be honest. It's just different.

The food looks delicious. We grow okra in our garden. It is easy to grow and I use it in lots of different dishes. I haven't tried this one. I think it must be one from Brazil. We love trying all kinds of different foods. It makes live interesting.

It's a Bianca recipe so I think so. And I love trying different food too.

I love that a fifty percent increase over last week makes it sound so much better but not only that its also true, interesting because it doesn't look slimy I dont normally like that kind of food texture but it looks yummy from the pics @exyle

Simple and wholesome! I love this @exyle!

Thank you!

we make that dish a bit different around here, we make is as a stew and eat it with lots more rice

Never had this okra before, and after your explanation I still dont know what to expect. The mouthfeeling, the taste (salt or bitter), or how it does smell. That leaves me only to try it myself as well. But the good thing is; I never heared about it, so I did learn at least a thing 👍🏻

Give it a go!

Yes, I will definitely try it; Wondering if the “jumbo” does sell it 😉

oww it's looking good. hope taste as well

wow excellent recipe indeed, i really like vegetables and especially okra and beans because they increase the flavor and taste of the dish and vegetables are also full of nutrients and vitamins, i notedown the recipe and i surely give it a try and man the end result of the dish is no doubt awesome and it looks so tasty too, thanks for sharing this recipe with us, Stay blessed.

nice healty food after leg day my friend,, u need good rest now

thanks for sharing this experience with us

If your muscle hurts, it means you had a good workout. Its very funny to imagine how you walk, some time ago when I started going to gym I had muscle pain as well and my walk was kind of funny. 91A2339E-8252-4BC1-AB28-CDF876685A7F.gif

I love okra! Nice post and great healthy meal @exyle :)

Oh, yes, your dish looks very appetizing and its ingredients show that the meat and vegetable complement each other giving the dish an original taste. I'm sure, my friend, that your dinner after the workout was unforgettable! Thank you Mark and keep us informed of what's happening!

This meal is our name bamia

The meal looks yummy

Bamya*

oh looking delicious

look so delicious :) @exyle

Eetsmakelijk 😊

ohI love the beans, delicious food. what beautiful pictures, very good work. success! by the way I follow you :)

Exellent , I am vegeterian

If you aren't in danger of falling over while walking back to your car it wasn't an effective leg day.

But, okra will make everything better. I especially love it fried, though that isn't very conducive to weight loss.

Okra is very good and Nigerians love it for preparing soup "obe ila" in Yoruba language. I am also a Nigerian too....... Lol!

Wow, yum yum,
Happy to see you happy :) Thanks for sharing
Always smile like this <3
God bless you brother.

Omfg! Are you kidding me? Where I'm from this is so incongruous, but look how beautiful it looks on that plate. I guess that's the beauty of life. Enjoy it, brother!

Okra is very slippery and slimmy does it mean the end product of the food is also slippery or not?

I love okra, never tried it with ground beef before. Looks like it taste great though. Nice quick meal.

wow i think its really yammi ......

starting with confidence, will definitely make us successful.
continue to be the best @exyle, for the family and the future itself.

Its look delicious. İsn't it? Cangrululation. .
This food is healthy. . I like it. I wiil cook the food..one day. I hope..
Lezzetli görünüyor. Tebrikler.sağlıklı bir yiyecek. Ben de bu yemegi yapacagim.bir gün umarım. .

Looks great, you need to taste Nigerian okra, it's kinda nice, sorry about your leg

If you serve okra with rice and beans, you will definitely be seen as a clown. Not to mention cooking for 15 minutes. We eat okra with pounded yam, Fufu made from cassava, we call it swallow. But food is the same everywhere, just the method of preparation that differs. Will try it out but with out the beans..

That's my Favorite

My son who plays football, and works out gets sore sometimes afterward and he found this after workout shake which supposes to help you with your soreness: coconut milk or milk, banana, teaspoon peanut butter but he also ads yogurt and coconut oil and some honey but that is optional.
That's his after workout shake which was recommended to him by a professional athlete.

That look so delicious @exyle, following, upvoted, resteemed

@exyle I have never tried OKRA maybe I will look into it. By the way that did look good since I am hungry right now.

Gran Post, I invite you to go through my post https://steemit.com/food/@moccat/6-comidas-coreanas-que-debes-probar. Greetings.

Hello, fellow beef lover!
Did you ever try Kobe? That's the best beef I've ever tasted. I recommend you try it!

Yes doing legs sucks but you have to work hard to achieve good results friend

Taking these photos in the kitchen is really challenging I would say, yet You did a great job helping me to see the theory and the practical aspects in preparing this meal. I have eaten okra (as in okra soup which is a very common food in Nigeria) but not with beans and rice. I wonder how the slimy nature of okra is compatible with rice and beans. I will Love to try it since the it is not difficult to prepare (based on your procedure). Thanks for sharing these with us.

I really support your program and good luck for you

delicious.

This looks great. It's also very tasty. I really like to cook and try new recipes. Thank you for sharing this with me. Greetings from Belgrade.

Very nice and delicious food, good for your recipe, rice and beans with rice and rice and seeds are great.

thank you

The cooking part of the story is great. Okra is only used here in Nigeria to cook okra soup. Great stuff :)

i love rice.

Hello, I love your post, as a food lover I can tell you that you stand out in the organization of your blog, you are creative and you show what you want us to read.

In my country, what you have prepared soon becomes different, when you join an income, I will make my post to see the difference between our countries. I hope you allow me to tag you.

excellent post friend, from venezuela. @exyle

Ohhh .. I am a sauce man... need some sauce on the rice

Excuse me if I am really ignorant..😆

lol I could never be consistent staying in the gym for more than a month :(

Let me tell you that this meal is something that we eat a lot here in my country Venezuela, but without the okra, but it's still really delicious! Greetings and good luck with your legs, I know how that feels hahaha

That's a very nutritious meal @exyle
Okara is muciliginous and cleans the intestinal tract plus it controls hyperacidity too.

Love simple and tasty dishes! Interestingly it also seems they are most nutritious and satisfying.

Look nice

Yaaaayyy.... Another tasty recipe....

Can't wait to try this one out....

Although in Nigeria, we take slurpy foods like okra with solid foods such as pounded yam.

It looks like delicious! Congratulations for your post @exyle! Resteem!

@exyle,
The jelly of Okra is a type of nutritious food. It looks delicious. Wanna try it at home! Thanks for sharing dude!

Cheers~

Looks creative ;)
#legday xD

Mmm love okra. Slimy is definitely the only way to describe it lol usually it freaks people out who aren't use to it. Texture is a hurdle for a lot of people. I grew up on it so I love it and its weirdness

Great simple, healthy recipe! :)

Very interesting recipe,I think my fiancé will love it!You just helped me with introducing him with new food just like Bianca did with you!😁

Okra is very yummy. But you don't have to cook them for 15 minutes. Around 7 minutes would do in all my recipes. Try stir frying okras with egg, chili and turmeric powder. It gives a real ooommph... to the dish. Also you can make curries from it. Hmm... you inspire me to cook okra today.

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

well the okra is not new for me because i ate it many time and still its a specaill vegtable of summer and delecious dish. if you used onions some more, it will make more tasty, and what about your leg day @exyle

Good jobs @exyle

nice vegatable
thanks for sharing

You really are a good cook. I can percieve the saint of the food from here. I'm 100% sure the food would be delicious.

Okra is an excellent remedy for let day! Squats?

The meal is integrated, there are carbohydrates and potassium ,,, well cooked my friend, give me just a little rice LOL

Nice and seems delicious... Hey I am following you since long.. I am not getting good response from steemit.... I want to talk to you... Can I please?

legs have the tough day around but seems like that delicious food made it happy :D

Interesting! the part of the world where i come from, it's called "OKRO" and we use it to make soup. We chop it or marsh it, garnish it with all sort of beef, stock fish, snail, chrimps and then spice it up accordingly. So delicious and has awesome aroma. Guess, this knowledge as regard your post is an additional for me.

This is a very good recipe....its really going to help your abs..i don't know if you love a six pack stomach but i think you on track boss..i can imagine the pain around your leg region after a leg day but the good news is that with the pain comes the gain..keep it up boss

@exyle food mengungah tastes make the stemans look hungry

The gym session was worth it after all the hard work and having a delicious food like that :)

It looks like a delicious dinner. I like it @exyle

My mom likes to cook something like that very often.
Even though I don't want to admit it but yours looks better, I should give her your recipe.
