It's been established that the STEEM token is needed to have an influence on the Steemit blockchain (votes) and also needed with anything regarding an SMT on the Steem blockchain.
Having STEEM tokens is therefore great if you believe in the project where ever it might go.
Now having said that. There are two opinions going around at the moment. One says the focus should be on making Steemit the biggest social media site on the planet vs SMT's is the future (income) of media.
I think both are possible.
I rather see more separate apps and frontends than 1 big Steemit website.
I don't think one big Steemit website is the way to go for the future.
I think there is more power in individual apps and frontends but all connected through the Steem blockchain.
These can (and are) already developed by different devs and can be monetized by taking a percentage of the earnings of the content that is created through them.
The free market will decide what the best apps/frontends are and users will use them accordingly.
The fact that all this development happens on the Steem blockchain will make sure that the STEEM blockchain is going to be the biggest social media experience on the planet.
It won't be a website, it will be a blockchain, that will be the winner.
And the cherry on top. All these apps and frontends have a built-in wallet where users can send STEEM and STEEM dollars to anyone anywhere in the world. Or and this might be the magic: SMT's.
SMT's are great to get other parties involved on the Steem blockchain.
To get other websites/community or even game makers onboard the Steem blockchain SMT's are the answer.
Because I can perfectly imagine these party's not wanting to use STEEM or STEEM dollars for their community or game. Why create value for these tokens if others outside your environment can benefit from it too.
But an SMT can have its own value. Suited for different parties and purposes but all build on top of the Steem blockchain.

I definitely see both sides of the discussion here, but the more I've thought about it I can definitely see SMTs as the future of the internet. Websites and apps number one goal are maximizing it's user base. They also want users engaging as much as possible on their platform and what better way than providing a monetary reward for activity and engagement. If you end up with hundreds, possibly even thousands of websites and apps all powered by the Steem block chain it's very easy to see how Steem could grow the world over and be the number one most used crypto globally, which will increase the value tremendously.
As investors, our goal is to put our money in the best possible place to maximize returns. There cannot be any ideological bias at play here. While being the number one social media site might be well and good, it pales in comparison to the financial returns of a globally used crypto currency backing hundreds our thousands of websites and apps.

nice post and good video also, well you are absolutely spot on with your observations, steem and SMT are going on hand in hand and no doubt all these changes surely gives steemit a great strenght, well you also talk about the easy signups and i think yes that should be an issue some peoples are waiting even for weeks to get their account password and this is something steemit needs to improve because it's somewhat discouraging peoples and easy signups very much needed, well about SMT induction the one of the greatest things is that every SMT is issued on top of steemit blockchain and steem is used as main token with every SMT that's fantastic, thank you very much my friend for sharing your great personal experience with us, stay confident and blessed.

To be frank, Steemit's web interface as it is now doesn't really encourage group discussion, it is more of a hit and run kind of discussion. Moving forward, I think Steemit can evolve into somewhat more of a forum-based interface.

I think any SMT will be tradable within an internal market so the markets will ultimately set the price. I think the original price is set in the ICO. (don't pin me down on this).

Oh man 7 cents to 1.5$ i amsat on the sidelines for half a year I screwed up my first login and walked away. Silly me oh well is still super cheap compared to the price 5 years from now.
