It is impossible for happiness to exist if it wasn't because sadness exists. And vice versa. That story is likely made up by progressive people who are not happy with their own culture and wanted everyone to change their own into African or Eastern culture.

It is not motivational.
Imagine one of those boys runs to the basket, instead. Such a bad boy, isn't it? What if, after arriving alone to the basket and winning the prize, he decides to go to a near place, where he knows there is people who hasn't eat for weeks. Such a different outcome.
The story tries to convince the reader that acting in group is better while it doesn't have to be that way.

I guess! If even in the competition the boys prefered sharing their winning so they would definitely love sharing it with others who haven't eaten for weeks! atleast this story would teach them to share!
