This article has been shared a lot in recent times which is basically a satire piece that states Iceland has declared all religions are weapons of mass destruction.
There was obviously going to be some differences in opinion on this. Atleast that was the case in my news feed where there were differing views on the same.
Satire or not there is some truth to the headline. Religious intolerance is a root of many crimes throughout history. Infact religion has also led to several wars.
Even in the day and age of social media where it's easy to communicate our differences in opinion, amicably people resume to trolling and armies fight wars due to ideological differences that are backed by religion.
Religion has been a great way to control the minds of people and get them to do certain things. There are so many religions in the world and so many gods and we're just one species.
Everyone believes their god is real and no one has any proof of anything nor the rationale to question why they've been told to follow a specific religion or god other than it being a tradition of their respective family or community they belong to.
Religion has also created a divide amongst people like nothing else. It has only brought together people who subscribe to the same ideology. However, like most issues that plague us are man-made, religious divide is also a man-made issue. Religious divide exists because religion exists.
This isn't about ending the intolerance in the world. I think it's nearly impossible to change the world but people themselves aren't very responsive to drastic changes. People tend to fight changes. A change is thought where we ask questions to find answers is the first step in living a rational life.
This isn't encouraged especially if you come from an orthodox or conservative family where you do what you are told and assume it to be the ultimate truth because it has been handed down in your family through several generations.
It's true that cultural differences stemming from religions adds a flavour to life. It makes everyone unique and to those who depend on their religious outlook to provide peace in their lives it probably is helpful to these people despite the various issues that have wreaked havoc on our world due to religious propaganda and actions.
Well this is a topic that can be debated until the cows come home. But we can discuss.
So, do you think religions are weapons of mass destruction?
But, before you answer this, please exercise some rational thought and don't let emotions dictate your responses.

When I read the headline, my first thought was: "wow, that's what I've been saying all this time," followed by: "but this can't be real!"
But I agree, satire or not, there is some truth to it. Though I would probably expand it by including other factors of arrogance. Putting yourself above others based on your faith is not that different from basing it on your culture, nation, traditions, genetic make-up, sex, or even your education, your intelligence, your "level of moral understanding", ... and yes, even on such things as your (supposed) open-mindedness, social / environmental consciousness, your courage to stand up for other people, or issues that you consider important. So while religions are an old way of packaging one's arrogance into a set of values (which on their own may be highly valuable), it is not uncommon to wrap it into all kinds of new covers, ranging from veganism to militant anti-religionism... the later of which I may have fallen into.

Even I was quite happy when I read it but sadly it wasn't real.
But you make some great points there.

Indeed, the religions were organised to control the mass according to the vision of elites. They acted like opium that dumbed the human rationality.
Even most of the messiahs from the different religions never wanted or thought of organising a religion. For them, religion was a very individualistic and personal thing, just like love. For example, you can look at Buddha or Jesus life. They never talked about any organised religion and just wanted to knock at the door of the heart of the individual, so that the real religion can born inside him/her. That was the possibility and the original purpose of coming together as a community.
But, when they died, the elites took control of their teachings, suppressed whatever they wanted and erected the fake religions to carry on their social and political agenda.
So, in my opinion, a person can not be religious in real sense, unless he is connected to his heart and the life around. Everything else is mass control and manipulation.

Good points and people fall for this stuff all the time. People also tend to be gullible and easily manipulated and hence religions have literally "banked" on this.

That's akin to brushing things under the carpet for me although it is undoubtedly the safe way out. :)
