Bit of fun with a Satire sticker - Kelloggs Corn Flakes

in life •  7 years ago

Hello Steemitians!

I thought I would do a post about this satire sticker that a friend help me create. So this all revolves around...

This all begins when I was studying holistic nutrition for a year in Canada. We had this project that seemed like a time filler. But, what it was is, we were given by the teacher a specific diet that we had to research and I got given the Kelloggs Diet.

Upon further investigation, I realized that there was something strange going on with the history of Kelloggs. John Harvey Kellogg was a very religious man and he had a very devout following. He believed that all sexual acts outside procreation were sinful, that includes; masturbation sex before marriage and everything in between.

Here is an excerpt from Mr. Kellogg's book, "Plain Facts for Old and Young," regarding methods for suppressing sexuality in kids;

  • "A remedy which is almost always successful in small boys is circumcision, especially when there is any degree of phimosis. The operation should be performed by a surgeon without administering an anesthetic, as the brief pain attending the operation will have a salutary effect upon the mind, especially if it be connected with the idea of punishment, as it may well be in some cases. The soreness which continues for several weeks interrupts the practice, and if it had not previously become too firmly fixed, it may be forgotten and not resumed."
  • "a method of treatment [to prevent masturbation] ... and we have employed it with entire satisfaction. It consists in the application of one or more silver sutures in such a way as to prevent erection. The prepuce, or foreskin, is drawn forward over the glans, and the needle to which the wire is attached is passed through from one side to the other. After drawing the wire through, the ends are twisted together and cut off close. It is now impossible for an erection to occur, and the slight irritation thus produced acts as a most powerful means of overcoming the disposition to resort to the practice,"
  • "In females, the author has found the application of pure carbolic acid (phenol) to the clitoris an excellent means of allaying the abnormal excitement."

Then Mr. Kellogg thought that flavourful food aroused people. All the spicy and rich flavours got people a going. Bam! A little bit of cayenne! Nope. He wanted his followers to stay aligned with the beliefs of his organization and thus needed a very bland food to promote. Something so entirely bland that when it was consumed absolutely no thought of sexual pleasure would enter one's mind.

Thus! Corn Flakes were created.

So, upon learning this I thought, "hey, wow. wouldn't it be great to support Mr. Kelloggs original intention behind cornflakes and try to get a marketing campaign going." So I wrote up the anti-pleasure facts nutritional label, took some measurements to get the exact size of the current label on the cereal box. And Wa BAM!

I have been doing a bit about this at my comedy shows and then giving away the sticker for free.

I thought I would throw in some art work that inspired me. I saw this at Dismaland back in 2015.
