Keeping Your Word...

Is keeping our word obsolete? Is a handshake meaningless, as a gesture to represent agreement?

Saying you do something followed by actually doing it used to be quite a norm in our society.

Now so many lie to their teeth, that I wonder if they started to believe their own lies.

Maybe being late for an appointment is not the end of the world (in some cultures), but unless there were serious reasons not to be on time, it is a way to break your word. I wouldn't consider it a huge deal, but being on time helps create a good impression in my book.

Is "No, I can't make it." or "Sorry, I am booked until..." or "I have an opening on..." worse than saying "I'll be there in half an hour" and never be there? And even more, do that repeatedly?

And that's when people are flesh and blood, and you know them directly. I say that it's possible they started to believe their own lies, because sometimes they look you in the eyes when they tell them. And it's not just one person, there are more, way more, so tiring in a web of lies. And it's not just you, you hear others complaining of similar situations happening to them.

Is online better? No, it can't be, in fact it may be what younger people use as a mean to improve their abilities to lie or disguise, in anonymity.

Is keeping our word obsolete? Am I too old already?

I still believe that keeping your word is a very valuable character trait that should be taught to our children and rewarded in the marketplace.
