I've come on Steemit to chew gum and kick ass ....... And I'm all out of Gum!
A classic line from one of the greatest movies of all time John Carpenters 'They Live'. Yes its cheesy and yes the acting isn't exactly Shakespearian but that all adds to the kitsch, 80's charm. The reason however that this movie is such a timeless classic is because its such a perfect metaphor of whats really going on in the world , if you have the courage to "put the glasses on" a phrase as relevant now as "take the red pill"
The movie stars Rowdy Roddy Piper , world wide WWF (as it was then) Superstar as John Nada , meaning nothing, a hint of how worthless us nobodies are in 'Their' system!
He's a drifter looking for work and stumbles into a situation where he discovers a box of sunglasses. Upon trying a pair on he is, much like Neo in The Matrix able to 'see' true reality .... That our world is an illusion, completely controlled via subtle means of brainwashing us, into following the best interests of an elite class, that walk amongst us undetected.
They Live ..... We Sleep
I was a teenager when this movie came out and what really stuck in my mind was the epic fight scene involving Piper and co-star Keith David who plays Frank, a friend of Nada. The scene lasts a good 6 minutes of screen time and is a glorious bloody battle of wrestling moves and comic book violence.
Growing up I was always considered a bit of a movie buff by my friends and whenever I was asked what the greatest movie fight scene was I would always without hesitation name this battle in They live. It wasn't until I was much older though that I got the significance , the metaphor.
Trying to wake other people up, trying to make them "put the glasses on" is an epic, monstrous battle for those who can 'see', one that will go on a long time and result in a lot of harm and self sacrifice ..... Even metaphorically being knee-ed in the nuts multiple times!
Its a timeless, classical analogy by the genius John carpenter and one that the alternative research community should take great inspiration from, and maybe like myself as a teenager we should come to actually enjoy this battle, because despite the pain we are ultimately on the right side of history.
I made a video meme with the new Bitcoin Private Fork and a clip with the movie they live check it out its on my page and Dtube!

Good post as I'm coming to expect from you. Steemit is gaining some pretty good writers/bloggers.
Now I'm going to have to see that film just to get the gist of this. I may well have seen it as I'm a John Carpenter fan.
I remember watching the Matrix and being only one of three people who actually got it. The rest thought it entertaining but weird. It made perfect sense to me.

Great post about a great film! Huge movie fan as well, this alongside The Thing have to go down as two of my favourite Carpenter movie's .. although Halloween is also close. It's always a fight to get the truth and a worthwhile message out .. but like you say there is strength to be drawn from being on the right side of history.

Thank you Sir , You didn't mention Escape From New York? Come on I know your a big Snake Plissken fan! I actually watched The Fog when I was a kid and it put me off horror movies to this day! Or it might be their thin plots but either way I never watch them. I watched The Thing recently actually, such a brilliant atmospheric master piece

I know what you're saying about the thin plots of many horror films, I just added Halloween as a nod to his directorial skills and the atmosphere he acheived on such a low budget .. the slowly building sense of dread, the timing is perfect. I was thinking about adding snake to the list, then I remembered Escape From LA! :) I love The Thing, a true masterclass in tension. If you have yet to see it and like a good cerebral head scratcher try Triangle. Also Predestination is a must! just don't judge it by it's trailer, It's a film that stayed with me for days. I also like Jacob's Ladder but I imagine you've seen that?

I havn't seen Triangle so I'll take a look , Predestination i didn't like, Im a hard man to please I'm afraid and dodgy wigs give the plot away far too much. Have you seen Man From the Earth , I like the movie Pi also Adaptation is superb , Gattaca, Moon, Franklyn .... bit of a random list, i like originality. Im rarely pleased by more modern movies as I go for plot before anything else the only ones I've enjoyed over the past 5 years is Big Short , Under the Skin and the Jake Gyllenhall movie 'Enemy which went under most peoples radar and I believe is a masterpiece. i like when you said it stayed with you for days, thats important to me that i'm left with a feeling of wanting to understand more, shows depth. Westworld really gave me that feeling.

Ah man I loved Predestination. But then again I was in a very happy state of mind so that may have played a part, plus I'm also a huge fan of the original story .. which I'd recommend reading. Yes I love PI, Gattaca, Moon (different story but had a similar vibe to Silent Running) and Adaptation, but I've never got round to seeing Franklyn, Man from Earth so will look into those. These spring to mind as films I've enjoyed: The Fountain, Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind, Cube, Into the wild, Cloud Atlas, The Thin Red Line, Apocalypse Now, Monsters and Shutter Island. I know what you mean about modern film, I think I've come to lower my expectations to a point where the average can stand out in a sea of sub mediocrity. I'm a huge fan of 70's cinema, a time when directors where experimenting with a new genre of freedom and Cinematography. I felt the Westworld series had multiple layers of depth and posed some really profound questions, excellent writing with many sublimal messages regarding the current state of humanity.

Yh i like all those movies Eternal sunshine is another Charlie Kaufman movie like Adaptation , the mans a genius. Shutter island is awesome reminds me of Angel Heart. I forgot that i also enjoyed other Nolan stuff other than Westworld I think they are great writers even the Batman Trilogy is decent but Interstellar and Inception really showed that cerebral movies can also be big box office. I agree certainly that the 70s was the golden era of cinema, effects were convincing but hadn't overtaken plot or subtext as priority. Deliverance, Badlands, Serpico, Godfather, Taxi Driver, Deer Hunter, One Flew over the Cuckoos Nest, Clockwork Orange ..... theres a 70s grittiness in all these movies that i love.

Thanks alot @steemster238 appreciate the kind words! More than a movie, I think creativity moves into being considered "art" when It truly effects consciousness, and that can certainly be said about this film.

Would you believe I didn't see this film until about two months ago? I'm 32 now. The fight scene is just awesome, I remember laughing in shock as I watched it every time I thought they were wrapping it up and then it just started going again. The whole film is a great metaphor, and I never thought of the fight scene in that regard until now. Great write up!

Good man. It is the perfect educational movie as its fun and entertaining but as Roddy Piper is quoted as saying it really is a documentary on how the system operates!

Depends on the rate of quantum flux and wether the Bear is A) Catholic and B) An Existentialist .... If the answer is yes to both those questions and Jupiter is rising in the constellation of Gemini then it certainly would stink yes!

They live needs to be remade. I'm thinking Alex Jones for Rowdy Roddy Pipers role. He'd be perfect.

Its being remade actually, well Eight o'clock in the morning the short story They Live was based on is being made into a movie.. As for Alex Jones the only role he could fill in the movie would be one of the creatures pretending to be something they are not. 😂

This movie still had the message. Well.. U see when we goed from 99 to 2000 since those times they didnt even allow to make any of these good movies with too 'exposing' message. Well one good one is Equilibrium, if u havent seen that one its pretty good one. Upvoted.

Thank you friend. Yes I've seen Equilibrium many times and I agree with you somewhat although I dont think its a case that we're not allowed to make metaphorical movies just that through the process of behaviourism the populus is now so "dumbed down" that movies like this are not popular. Just like in music which has become full of talentless and facile people who have no originality or nuanced thinking to offer, movies since CGI are just firework shows and the modern consumer is happy to consume dogshit so long as its sprinkled with glitter. Expose movies can still be made though take The Big Short for example, this movie even tried using pop culture to explain how badly the average person is being shafted and yet provoked no real reaction. People are locked in psychological hypnotised prisons and the powers that be could literally go on the mainstream news and tell everyone blatantly, and it would still have very little effect.
