Long before I stumbled on Charlie Chaplin’s The Great Dictator’s Speech, my most favourite speech was Martin Luther King's "I Have A Dream". Although I still love Luther's compelling speech, Chaplin's speech swept me off my feet, moving me to tears.
Unlike Luther's speech, however, that was delivered in the quest for racial equity in America, Chaplin's speech was fiction, but a blatantly realistic fiction. Chaplin calls for universal brotherhood, peace, and freedom from every form of oppression.
In this post, I'll be sharing the transcript of Chaplin's speech together with the original video from his 1940 movie, The Great Dictator. I hope that you will also be moved by this inspiring speech.
Transcript
“I’m sorry, but I don’t want to be an emperor. That’s not my business. I don’t want to rule or conquer anyone. I should like to help everyone – if possible – Jew, Gentile – black man – white. We all want to help one another. Human beings are like that. We want to live by each other’s happiness – not by each other’s misery. We don’t want to hate and despise one another. In this world there is room for everyone. And the good earth is rich and can provide for everyone. The way of life can be free and beautiful, but we have lost the way.
Greed has poisoned men’s souls, has barricaded the world with hate, has goose-stepped us into misery and bloodshed. We have developed speed, but we have shut ourselves in. Machinery that gives abundance has left us in want. Our knowledge has made us cynical. Our cleverness, hard and unkind. We think too much and feel too little. More than machinery we need humanity. More than cleverness we need kindness and gentleness. Without these qualities, life will be violent and all will be lost….
The aeroplane and the radio have brought us closer together. The very nature of these inventions cries out for the goodness in men – cries out for universal brotherhood – for the unity of us all. Even now my voice is reaching millions throughout the world – millions of despairing men, women, and little children – victims of a system that makes men torture and imprison innocent people.
To those who can hear me, I say – do not despair. The misery that is now upon us is but the passing of greed – the bitterness of men who fear the way of human progress. The hate of men will pass, and dictators die, and the power they took from the people will return to the people. And so long as men die, liberty will never perish. …..
Soldiers! don’t give yourselves to brutes – men who despise you – enslave you – who regiment your lives – tell you what to do – what to think and what to feel! Who drill you – diet you – treat you like cattle, use you as cannon fodder. Don’t give yourselves to these unnatural men – machine men with machine minds and machine hearts! You are not machines! You are not cattle! You are men! You have the love of humanity in your hearts! You don’t hate! Only the unloved hate – the unloved and the unnatural! Soldiers! Don’t fight for slavery! Fight for liberty!
In the 17th Chapter of St Luke it is written: “the Kingdom of God is within man” – not one man nor a group of men, but in all men! In you! You, the people have the power – the power to create machines. The power to create happiness! You, the people, have the power to make this life free and beautiful, to make this life a wonderful adventure.
Then – in the name of democracy – let us use that power – let us all unite. Let us fight for a new world – a decent world that will give men a chance to work – that will give youth a future and old age a security. By the promise of these things, brutes have risen to power. But they lie! They do not fulfil that promise. They never will!
Dictators free themselves but they enslave the people! Now let us fight to fulfil that promise! Let us fight to free the world – to do away with national barriers – to do away with greed, with hate and intolerance. Let us fight for a world of reason, a world where science and progress will lead to all men’s happiness. Soldiers! in the name of democracy, let us all unite!”
Save the Planet! Smash the System!

I really fail to understand how certain aspects of this speech are still relevant even now. I always looked at Chaplin as a comedian, however this speech makes me believe he would have made a good leader and a wonderful guiding force for this world.
The emphasis on humanity in awe-inspiring, as leaders hardly speak about it nowadays. We only get to hear sad speeches on development, growth...blah blah blah !!!!
I have never seen this video before, it is really inspiring, Thank you for the share :)

After many years of making very successful silent films, Chaplin was accused of being a communist; perhaps because his films had a very deep social contents. So he was forced to leave the United States and settle in Switzerland. Congratulations for this interesting message. I'll give you a vote and hope you support me too. --Thank you so much
In this picture we can see Chaplin with the famous scientific Albert Einstein.

hey @gandhibaba, Charlie Chaplin was the great person who still lives in many people heart. Still, there are many people out there who don't even know who Charlie Chaplin was and how he was able to earn the fame and cash. I think it's a good idea to tell people here about him. Let's start...
♥ After Chaplin's birth, his father who was a notorious drinker left him.
♥ His mother also had some mental issues when Charlie was at the age of 7. However, she worked as a vaudevillian and music hall singer when she was good. She is known as Lily Harley by her stage name
♥ At the age of 7, Charlie dance on the streets to keep up his family.
♥ Charlie's mother was his inspiration. He used to saw her whenever she acted on the stage. Later on, his inspiration made him a world-class comedian.
SO here's his story in short, if there's anything wrong. Please correct it. And @gandhibaba, you have shared good stuff. Let me follow you for more such great content. I believe that in the future you will share more awesome posts like this. See you soon. Keep the good work up ☻

Fantastic speech, from a great man. If only our actual leaders would have the decency, courage, and insight to be able to make a similar speech in favor of similar ideals.
Maybe, one day soon, the leader of the mightiest nation on this planet will arise, call us all to attention, and .....
Oh, never mind. :-(

You've made very good points here sir. If every great leader will make such beautiful speeches, share the ideals, stand by it and have it defended, the world would have become a better place. I understand the never mind part, but never mind.....hehehe.

Kind of ironic, the more things change the more they stay the same. Considering when this was done and how things are now, how much have we progressed? This is truly one of the best speeches of all time.

Yes you're right. He made these statements over six decades ago and we have made progress, yes progressed backward significantly.

I agree. Why does the human race have to be so ignorant? I know an impossible question to answer. I was raised not to hate. We could use the word dislike but not the word hate. It was treated that same way as using F*ck or any other cuss word.
Sadly, I see my mom slipping in to the world's preconceived notions about race and religion. Even to the point it affects me. She doesn't agree with my spirituality. I just tell her I'm choosing a different path it all leads to the same place.

I think this is so because humans are emotional and cultural beings. We allow sentiments to overpower us even though there are no concrete reasons for holding such beliefs.
