Today is the swearing in of the new mayor of La Ceiba, Honduras, his name is Jerry Sabio, he is a Garifuna (a community of African descendants), he is a doctor with a specialty and is very well known around here.
He is in for a rough time as the municipality owes around 40 million USD and I don't know where he is going to get money to pay for that. Even the garbage collectors have not been getting their pay, but the local chamber of commerce funded their salaries this week, so at least that is a good start, the city was getting full of trash.
Sabio is also not from the current ruling party, so I think he won't be getting much help from the central government, so I guess he will have to just rely on local funding. And that is not even taking into account the economic problems we are going to face after all the protests that have weakened the already frail economy.
As a side note, Danny Glover of "Lethal Weapon" fame is here at the mayor's inauguration ceremony - I don't know why he is here maybe he is a friend of Sabio, but anyway a lot of people are at the ceremony probably some of them just trying to see Glover.
It's funny, I saw the photo before reading the article and thought to myself, "hey, that looks like the Lethal weapon guy!" I was right! @ironshield
