I just watched this short film, Poster Grrl, by @fringelifesquad.
You can watch it below. At least for 6 and a half more days, at which time it will be removed and will be available on Amazon Prime and other VOD services.

It's a very interesting movie. I suggest that you give it a watch. They definitely put a lot of work into it.
There's a line that's repeated quite a few times in the film, "Don't you want to get better?", that sort of struck me. It reminded me of some things I've heard people say recently, including a few things that caused me to make that post about ableism. Alcoholism is a disease, like so many other things. I don't care if you think it is or not, because those that suffer through it know how hard it is to just quit. It's the reason so many of them have to go completely dry. They can't have just one or two drinks like many people can. Whatever this girl has faced in her life to cause her to retreat into the bottle, it's not like she can just change herself in a day.
The other day I sort of went on a rant in @thehoneys' comment section on one of her posts (sorry about that) due to something she said, talking about how the most important thing about a trainer is psychological. It's important that a trainer know plenty of exercises and how to properly do them, so the client doesn't get injured, but unless they can drive them and keep them motivated, it doesn't matter. There are tons of people out there that can show you how to properly train, what makes a good trainer is someone that can get you to train and keep you motivated.
Watching Poster Grrl, something just clicked, where I suddenly understood that all of these things that I was getting annoyed at recently were all the same thing. People are blaming the victims for problems that they can't easily control.
When someone has an eating disorder or alcoholism or any sort of disability, mental illness, etc, they can't just change. It's not fucking easy. You being an asshole and saying some shit like "Don't you wanna change?" won't help them. It's like my story the other day of the guy hitting someone's legs with a baseball bat and then asking them why they don't just get up. They can't just get up. They can't just get better. Just because someone else was able to complete some marathon after they had their legs amputated doesn't mean just anyone can. Just because one person was able to overcome their alcoholism doesn't mean another can, especially not by you throwing it in their face that they aren't able to do something that someone else can.
If you know someone with a problem and you actually care, you should be by their side and help them overcome it. Not everyone can just get over something because they want to. They have to fight. Just because you don't think they're trying hard enough doesn't mean they're not trying. It could take everything they have to get out of bed in the morning.
@geekpowered You are more than welcome to rant on my comment section any day you want!! :).
And it's not about whether people believe or not that addiction is an actual disease. It's science, it IS a disease. It's even been classified a disease by the Center For Disease Control (CDC). So, people can not believe it all they want, but, it's not something you 'believe in' or 'don't believe' in. Mermaids are something you 'believe in' or 'don't believe in'.
As far as being better, I feel that's personal. I personally strive to be a better me. I feel for myself, there is always room for improvement. As for others, I only help those that want to be helped. Even with addiction, as I've had it affect people I love. You can't force help on them. They have to be ready to receive it. :)

The real question is, do you believe in the make-believe pretty mermaids or the scary ones that eat yo face? :P
I think it's a lot harder to help someone that's not seriously trying but I don't think that you can't necessarily help them at all. I know that there are a lot of things that don't help them.
It's like if a friend has a weight problem. You can just nag them about it, or you can try to help them a little bit at a time if they want it. The nagging for damn sure doesn't help them but maybe if you are there for them, occasionally offering a better alternative, or going for a bike ride with them, or whatever, maybe that will help. It's a lot easier to help someone that's actively fighting...but sometimes you have to help them to get there.

The make believe pretty glittery mermaids for sure!!
Exactly. You have to just give support and be ready when they are. :)

Good point. You often see that with smokers, they try to quit. Fail. Try again, fail. It's the motivation that does it. One day you wake up and say "I quit", but this time you mean it. That's when everything works out.

Yeah... The best way to quit is to just decide that you are going to.
Of course, nowadays, if you kinda wanna quit, having the option to vape makes it hella easy comparatively.

Dunno if I'd call vaping, quitting though.

Well, it's not smoking, so no cancer, and less smell. But if they wanna quit fully, they have to use the vape to quit completely, like a crutch.
