A Twenty Year Snowboarding Pause Ends

This afternoon I scribbled this missive as I was surrounded by a sea of colorfully adorned and slightly damp section of humanity:

Lookout Pass straddles the border of Idaho and Montana and is home to the second oldest ski lodge in the Pacific Northwest. All of this slopetastic detail was swirling in my powder awed mind as we made our way through the fiberglass ski and board bedecked throng to claim our modes of slide. This hillside occasion was special as it was my kid's first time snowboarding. It might have well been my first time sliding across the floof too, for I hadn't been on a board in exactly twenty years.

Boards, boots, and bindings rented, my crew and I scampered toward the bunny hill with all the grace of a newborn fawn astride rollerblades. Boards secured wrongly with improper feet forward, we lumbered our way out onto the little lift that served the beginner hill. I think my quads and glutes were not appreciative of my first attempt down the gentle slope. My daughter and son, however, took to boarding like they do most things, with some athletic grace in the style of a bull in a china closet. It was while I was sitting on my rump on the bunny hill, remembering fondly that I, at one time, could snowboard rather well, that one of the ski instructors took pity on my pathetic, nostalgic form.

"Come on, Miss, stand up!"

A man wearing a ski school instructor jacket who was old enough to be my grandfather admonished me suddenly with snow-scholarly authority.

"Yes, sir!" I blurted catching myself before I said, "Yes, Grandpa."

"Straighten your legs, lean back! Don't use your hands, and for Flake's sake look where you're going, not where you're at!"

I must have been a somewhat passable non-student, for in that moment my long dormant muscle memory checked in and I slalomed down the hillside with almost grace.

"Great job girl! Steer from the belly button! Use your hips!" Ski Grandpa barked at me with what sounded a lot like pride in his voice.

And so with each ride on the chair and glide down the hill did my confidence ever grow and skill rapidly return. I remembered that I loved snowboarding, and as I looked up and beheld the joy emanating from my children's faces as they carved the mountainside, I vowed to not let 20 more years elapse between trips to the slope!

The bunny slope lift attendant was the greatest person ever! He was so awesome to everyone, especially the kids, with tips, tricks, songs, and good humor throughout the entire seven hours that we played on the hillside!

Recommendation Station: If you are looking for a non-pretentious, powder-rich, magnificently staffed place to go skiing or snowboarding in the North Idaho Panhandle, I wholeheartedly recommend Lookout Pass. It's worth the drive for the nostalgia factor alone, as they whole place is like stepping into snow-sports yesteryear!

I haven't been to Lookout in almost 20 years. They've massively expanded the mountain since then. When I was there, they had only one chairlift.

Holy crap, I sound old!

Get off my grass! HA HA!

I guess they just got a permit to massively expand the place, so you are really going to feel old if you ever wander up that way, and honestly, you skiing would be the greatest thing, like, ever!

I’ve always seen this in movies and on TV and always wanted to do it !! It looks like so much fun , along with skydiving

Oh wow! I will totally leave the skydiving to you! My younger cousin did that recently and she loved it, but I prefer to stay inside the perfectly good airplane, lol!

I hope that you get to go skiing or snowboarding someday too, it really is fun:o)!

Glad somebody enjoyed the snow. Winter returned here today with a little over a foot of snow. And it was 60 degrees here on Wednesday. I told you we are having a weird winter. And in case you were wondering my lack of hair didn't stop my head from becoming overheated while shoveling this slop. ;)

Despite the fact that I live 5 miles from two ski resorts, I've only gone skiing once in my life. I hated it. I'd rather be sledding, playing football, having a snow ball fight, building a snow fort, or playing a good game of king of the mountain on huge snowbanks. In other words anything but skiing.

Dammit, now I sound old like @jacobtothe. Nevermind, I forgot I am old.

I hate it when Spring is bipolar, ugh. I'm so glad that your snow cardio kept that gleaming noggin of yours toasty. Hopefully there was a fortifying cookie lying around for you to replenish your energy stores with, lol!

Slope sports are not everyone's cup of tea, you should hear my dad grouse about it, legendary griping there. You listed pretty much all of my favorite snow activities, in fact, when I was a kid you could often find me out in the snow, football in my ungloved hand, quarterback Kat. I wish I was still immune to the cold like I was back then.

I kind of want to send you a lift ticket to one of those resorts, but then again, I am sore, slightly old, and a bit of prat, he he!

And by my way of thinking, you kind of sounded uber young, I mean, you listed my kid's regular Saturday afternoon when it comes to activities you like:o)

Sure all of those snow activities are fun. But it's been a while for most of them. Except snowball fights. And shoveling.

I learned to ski at Lookout Pass in March 1999 at the ripe old age of 42. My girls insisted I join them in the beginners' class, so I did, reluctantly. I actually began to get the hang of it by the second session, and later perfected my skills at Mt. Spokane over the next few years. I was never a confidant skier, and never went very fast because I couldn't get the hang of those quick sideways stops. I have often thought I would like to go back to Lookout Pass and try those slopes again, now that I know how to ski, more or less. But it has been at least 10 years since I skied, and my joints begin to hurt just thinking about it!

You should totally go! There was a lady there who was getting her very first ski lesson and she was 71 years old! She was amazing!

The last time I went snowboarding was at White Pass in March of 1998 when I was a junior in high school, and if you want to see how I did things as a youngin, just watch my daughter play sports, no regard for my body given at all. These days, I am in less of a hurry and want to take my time so I don't get bodily massacred. Nice and easy is my mantra now, yet I find myself wanting to learn and do more than ever before, just more like an incoming tide and less like a tornado, lol.

By the way, I just got around to posting a story using the opening line with which you supplied me about four months ago. That's even slower than an incoming tide!

Written in a way that made me want to visit ski slopes immediately. Not going to happen due to geographical circumstances I live in.
Reminicent of when I took my kids skiing.
Thank you a most enjoyable read with nice humour.

Oh my, you are so awesome! Thank you so much for such a magnificent comment!

Hopefully a day will come sooner rather than later that you can hit the slopes:o)

Nice.
Cold!
Must surf...

😄😇😄

@creatr

There is a wee bit of snow there, wow! Most of the time when we go skiing it is machine snow, lol.
