A woman has slammed American Airlines for letting a man masturbate next to her on a flight while she slept.
Chloe King was subjected to a sexual offence on board a plane travelling from New York to Paris, when a fellow passenger was allowed to masturbate in the seat next to her while she was unconscious. The 30-year-old New Yorker learned of this violation upon waking, when a flight attendant alerted her to the unidentified male’s disgusting behaviour.
Sharing the ordeal on Medium, Chloe recalled:
I woke up right before landing to have a flight attendant call me to the back of the plane and inform me that the man sitting next to me had been masturbating beside me while I slept. The woman to his other side saw it happen and asked to be moved, and the French Police had been notified to arrest the man upon landing - they just wanted to let me know.
Chloe is now determined to hold American Airline accountable for their gross negligence regarding her safety and comfort while on board their aircraft. In the post, Chloe explained why she’d felt so violated, writing:
What they didn’t do was wake me up and move me to a safe place. What they didn’t do was accommodate my request — after informing me of the assault — to sit anywhere else on the plane for landing.Instead, they made me climb back over the sex offender, trapped between him and the window for the rest of the flight. I was shaking and crying and trying not to get sick.
She concluded, imploring people to chose another airline to fly with:
American Airlines, you knew what happened was criminal activity , therefore you had the offender arrested, yet you did nothing to stop the man’s actions or protect my safety in a horrifying situation. You chose to treat the man committing the crime with far more respect than the unconscious woman sitting beside him. As humans, we deserve more than that. So please, choose any other airline
In statement, an American Airlines spokesman said:
American always strives to maintain a safe and comfortable travel experience for all of our customers. We are reviewing how we handled the situation on this flight, and have reached out directly to Ms. King.
The statement added: “During the flight, our crew requested that French law enforcement meet the aircraft in Paris. Upon arrival, French officials interviewed the male passenger regarding the allegations.”
Frankly, it’s a weak response to what was an horrific experience for Ms. King and the error of the flight attendants’ ways – as well as, of course, the perpetrator himself – has left her feeling ‘anxious and vulnerable’.Between incidents like this and the negligence we’ve witness from United Airlines, it’s clear flying needs to be made safer for all.
