The "Story of the day"... is about my architect Harry (pictured), that I have working on my newest project. Now during his job interview with me he tells me of his family and about his son who has gone to 4 years of college to be an architect and how he has one more semester left but now has told Harry that he doesn't enjoy architecture and wants to run his own business which Harry believes is the wrong direction .....now this even though his son has made quite a name for himself in the South Florida area already and is doing well,…I asked him what is his business?…he looks at me with a sigh and says he is a DJ…I said what’s wrong with that????…he says "Well I don’t think it’s a secure future for him"…I reply "It sounds like you really want the best for him Harry"…he goes, "Of course I do, he's very smart and I think he could do more"…..I than reply, "Well let me tell you a story about this break dancer guy I know pretty well… this guy started out as a young kid winning break dance contests for money, then worked at a night club doing shows breaking while going thru school while getting home late and still keeping up his grades ... now his mom was a bit concerned but felt at ease when he was offered a full college scholarship to play soccer in North Carolina...and you know what? he turned it down, and chose to go and break dance for a living and since his mom just wanted the best for him and his happiness she let him do it"…."Now because of that this guy went on to perform and break dance in shows in Atlantic City, in Moscow in Las Vegas toured throughout the world matter of fact he opened up a theme park in Orlando, Universal Studios in 1989 with a breaking show ,then performed at Disney, toured with the NBA and on major cruise lines like Royal and Carnival... his company hired and gave opportunities to break dancers martial artist, and gymnast who had noooo prior entertainment experience and who have went on to work as dancers on major movies and back up dancers for musical artist like Brittany spears, I think in total he has hired over 250 plus performers and helped them become professional entertainers"....I continued "Can you imagine if his mom didn't let him make that choice?"…Harry didn't look convinced and replied "yes but what if DJing in clubs doesn't work out at least I know as an architect he can find work"..I said "You have to have confidence in him"....I said, "Maybe he will build a DJ business or be like some of these mega dj's and release records you never know..." This break dancer I'm talking about came up with an instructional break dance video series in the late 90's that sold worldwide and he had tremendous sales better than most television infomercials, who knows how many kids learned to break dance thru those DVD’s, not sure exactly how much he made but it was a lot"…..I went on to say "Was it hard for him? he told me it was extremely hard at times and he had many setbacks and had to make adjustments" … "but that goes with just any life even being an architect, right Harry?"…I continued "I think he’s still in business now 30 years later "…." that was his calling imagine if he went to college because he was told to and didn’t break dance and how many lives would be different if he didn’t pursue it?"..." Your son could be just like him and help bring jobs, influence people and bring music to the masses, you never know what impact it could make if you let him pursue his dream Harry, it's his calling especially if he feels that strongly to give up college for it"…Harry took a moment to think about what I just said…he seemed to understand but not get the point as yet...then I go…."Well I ‘ll tell you one more thing about him Harry, it wasn't just performing that worked out for him... not only did he do well as a break dancer but he started a real estate investment company just as a hobby because that was another of his passions since he was a kid… with his break dancing money, he bought his first house at age 19, and he does reeeeeelly well with real estate ...I couldn’t hold it in any longer and I started smiling and Harry starts catching on and starts smiling…. I said Yep he’s the guy who is writing you out this $4,000 check for your services today Harry…LOL…then I say," Your son will be okay Harry, if you need any help or have any questions on the entertainment business for him then give me a call and I'll try my best to help, but it sounds like he had great influence and guidance already from you so so have confidence in him and let him go after his dream....sounds like he will make you proud"….he nodded in acceptance and said "Ya I think he'll be a great DJ, he's a good kid, your right, I just need to believe in HIS dream":)……..Now friends here are the 3 lessons for today .......1. It doesn’t matter if you want to cook things, build things, paint things, teach things swim or spin on the ground… find your calling then find your work incorporating it…true success is found in your happiness in your life and purpose not the digits in your bank account …..2. Everyone has their purpose their calling in life but not everyone fulfills this purpose…do not die with your dreams….fulfill your purpose the rippling effect of not doing so could be tremendous......3.Most people will give 4 to 6 years in college spend 100’s of thousands of dollars in school but less than a year and no money to pursue their dream business or ideas, we are taught not to believe in ourselves or ideas but instead follow and to believe in others to instill what is our correct path in their interpretation of who we are…the most important lesson is: believe in yourself and your purpose.

As a ex professional rave/club DJ (over 1000 professional gigs, mostly touring not local, records released, etc).... I'd take the architecture gig in retrospect. Travel sucks, dealing with high people sucks, getting paid sucks.
