Things that annoyed me today (so far)

in life •  last year

The following is going to come across as petty. I am aware of this. In lieu of any sort of real problems in my life I nitpick that which is going on around me even though they don't actually affect me for the most part.

I don't think I am a perfect person and I am sure that I do thing that annoy other people as well.

I decided to write about this today because I woke up today feeling great because I ended up tired last night really early. I actually fell asleep multiple times watching episodes of Family Guy which is rare for me because I really like that show a great deal. I reckon i was "lights out" before 9pm last night. Therefore, I was actually in high spirits this morning and I know that the way that I am feeling right now about being annoyed isn't just because of something like a hangover or illness.

Overzealous construction workers

I have come to terms with the fact that my "new alarm clock" that is the construction site across from me is going to fire up at 7am every morning. This the earliest legal time that construction can begin in Da Nang. Well because I went to bed last night before 9, I was awake pre 7am anyway. It was around 6:35am that I started to hear some banging around on the ground. The construction guys were there early and while they technically were not working on the building, they were shuffling materials around right next to it. There is no way possible to move construction-grade rebar quietly but that didn't stop these guys. To be fair to the construction workers, it probably wasn't their idea and they were likely ordered to do this.

I just hope that whoever the foreman is on this project has something really noisy going on near his place of residence in the not-too-distant future. But then again, this is Vietnam and basically everything is under construction so chances are he already has this going on.

Improper elevator etiquette

I don't think that elevators are a terribly difficult thing to figure out. This is a small enclosed space that most people would probably prefer to not share with others. Just being in one puts a lot of people on edge so this is what makes the first irritating fuckwit that I encountered today all the more irritating.

Maybe I am just more cultured than other people but I think it is pretty common knowledge if you haven't grown up on a technology-free island all your life, that you have to let the people that are currently in the elevator out of it before you get on it.

When I got to the ground floor today there was a guy who must have been standing with his face a mere 4 inches from the opening doors and then when the door opened he got ON the elevator before letting me out. I had to move around this jagoff in order to exit the elevator, which I am clearly going to do seeing as how it had just arrived at the bottom floor with me in it. I just don't understand people like this who are either just completely obviously about their surroundings or simply don't care about anyone but themselves.

People expecting to be able to do things at strange times of day

Since I woke up so early I decided to take Nadi (my dog) on an early-ish walk before the streets get too hot. While I was about 20 minutes into this it was around 8:15 AM and I spot this older couple that is banging on the door of a business on a side road. They looked all dejected and upset that the door was not being answered.

So what kind of business was it? Was it a breakfast place because that would be acceptable. Was it a coffee shop because well, same story. No, it was a barber shop and they were upset that the guy wasn't open for haircuts at 8:15 in the morning.

Calm your tits you morons. It is ridiculous for you to expect a hair salon to be open at that time of day especially if you don't have an appointment which I know they don't because this is where I get my hair cut and he doesn't accept appointments.

In Vietnam, unless you are in a wedding and have an appointment haircut places generally don't even open at all until the afternoon. This couple, who were foreigners, maybe need to go get something to eat or take a walk on the beach or do something else that people do in the morning. Maybe later on they will go to an "all night cafe" and be upset that they aren't open at 2pm for drinks, or perhaps go to the shopping mall at 1am and get irate that they can't go shopping for Nike's in the middle of the night.

Seriously, get some sense people.

Driving unnecessarily close to others

This is something that annoys me almost every day because my dog is small and she has very little in the way of street smarts. The roads here in Da Nang are the same size as they are anywhere else, but on a regular basis we'll have some jackaloon that gives us about 6 inches of space to the side of us despite the fact that there is nobody else on the road. Why are they doing this? Are they trying to get under my skin?

I've said before that motorbike riders here in Vietnam take corners like they are trying to shave milliseconds off their PB lap time and the streets here are very dangerous for pedestrians and especially for dogs. It didn't help my annoyance levels that the guy on the bike was also driving what I consider to be WAY too fast for a residential area. If someone were to hit my dog I would be writing my next post from prison after I beat them to death. There is very little in the way of road courtesy here and you just have to get used to that, I know.

That's all I have for now but it's just 9:30 at this point and the really busy part of the day hasn't yet begun. I realize that I did most of this to myself because I chose to live in a very busy area. This is something that I grow to regret more and more as time goes by. The good news is that I don't really have to leave my house all that often and the annoyances for the most part stop once I get in my condo, close the double-paned glass doors, and just do things away from other people.
