The infinite information that the brain is processing every second tells us that there’s more to the world than what we’re perceiving with our senses. The brain processes 400 billion bits of information per second but we’re only aware of 2000 of those. Recent studies show that the ultimate reality depends on how the person perceives it and what they actually THINK IS REAL. So how does it work?
The brain is made up of neurons that form a neural net. Each place where they connect is integrated into a thought or a memory. The brain builds all its concepts by the law of associative memory. Ideas, thoughts, and feelings are all constructed and interconnected in this neural net. And all have a possible relationship with one another.
The brain doesn’t see the difference between what is SEES and what it REMEMBERS because the same specific neural nets fire it. As the saying goes: the nerve cells that fire together wire together.
Here’s an example. The concept of friendship is stored in the brain’s neural net. But this concept is built from many different ideas. It depends on person’s experiences and feelings connected to it. So if friendship is linked to, say, mocking, which is linked to feeling ashamed, which is linked to a specific person, which then is connected back to friendship, a certain BELIEF in regards friendship is created (i.e.: ‘I never make valuable friendships as they always end up with people mocking me about something’). On top of that, a specific EMOTION is triggered in the brain each time a person experiences anything to do with the above concepts (I.e.: friendship, mocking, a certain person or the thought of the above etc.).
Experiencing something in the present day that is a trigger to something that is very emotionally charged for us (say, similar situations from the past) makes us disconnected from the reality of what actually IS. What happens is that the brain goes on a somewhat autopilot. It fires the neurons that are closest in the net to the concept that is being experienced. So now the same person meeting a potential friend ‘automatically’ experiences certain EMOTION (resentment towards making new friends) based on the BELIEF that they have built based on past experiences.
Now here’s a tricky point: an average person loses their attention spam every 6–10 seconds per minute. Guess what those 2000 bits that the brain captures out of the 400 billion available will be connected to? Yup, our beliefs and emotions! We may see the potential friend making a remark that ‘sounds like mocking’ and the emotion they trigger in us, well, we’re already resentful entering this situation in the first place! What’s taking place now is a process called selective focus. Our eyes are in control of the molecules of emotion. Rapid eye movements that help us decide where to focus are literally under a command related to finding a certain emotional state and confirming visually the concepts that are being fired in the neural net of our brain. Have you ever been told that you see what you want to see? Well, you actually do! You do indeed live in YOUR OWN REALITY. Chosen as per the patterns of your emotions and beliefs.
Most of us are stuck in those patterns for years. We seem to always experience same situations i.e.: meeting people who ‘mock us’ as per our example. When, in reality, we filter what’s out there as per the patterns accumulated based on our experiences.
Once this is recognized most concepts significantly change their meaning. And when you start seeing those patterns in your everyday situations you simply start laughing! The saying of SEEING CLEARLY? You might as well be, literally. At the end of the day, you have 400 billion bits to choose from!
