Don't impulse buy a pet this holiday season!

in life •  7 years ago  (edited)

Every holiday season, plenty of animals are bought on an impulse. Let's discuss why Christmas puppies are becoming a dilemma.

Who wouldn't want an adorable bundle of fluff for Christmas? Puppies, kittens, and even exotic pets are becoming gifts for people all over the world. This happens every year, but what people just can't seem to understand is that living beings are not presents. Baby animals are cute, there's no doubt in that. That's probably the reason why thousands of pets are bought as Christmas gifts every year. But there's a problem here.

Animal shelters have a drastic spike in desperate calls and abandoned pets after holidays. People love the idea of having a pet. It seems like the ideal life, fun and cute, full of happiness. But it's not always so glamorous. Any pet is a responsibility, things that seem simple like fish have their own unique needs. They cost a lot of money, they get sick, they break things, exercise, and attention. That gets very tiring after a while, but it's different than getting bored with a new toy or game. It's not just you being affected. Would you have a child on a whim? Probably not (I'd hope not). It's a hefty responsibility and requires a lot of learning.

So how can this be stopped?

Impulse buying pets can be stopped by you! That's right, you make a change, and it's very easy. Here's how you do it: don't by a pet as a gift. That's it. That is all you have to do. But if you want to be extra productive, convince your friends and family to join you in the fight against impulse buying pets. But what if you really want a pet for Christmas?

Do your research

Before getting any pet, you need to do research. Especially with exotic pets becoming a popular choice, research is vital. Research what cage or tank size they need (if they need to be kept in one), what food they eat, how much exercise and attention they need, how much they'll cost, how long they'll live, etc.
Remember, if you want a pet, consider adopting, not shopping! Go to a shelter (preferable a no-kill shelter) and see if any pet catches your heart. You might be surprised.

If everyone plays their part, fewer pets will be neglected this year. Have a happy (hopefully animal neglect free) holidays!
