Did you know each Belgian "drug dealer with a license" (aka pharmacist) has the possibility to order the most pure and chemically made cocaine?
What's the reason behind this? Keeping us focused! Every now and then a Belgian pharmacist has to snort a bit of cocaine, just to stay focused. Long working hours, difficult patients,...
Just kidding! The reason behind the legal cocaine business in Belgium is very simple; sometimes a pharmacist has to make its own preparations. For example, we use it for a specific type of eye drops, used to diagnose a patient for the Horner-syndrome, sometimes in preparations that are used as a local anesthetic, (The nose, the nose! Very painful to operate, cocaine does the job!), et cetera...
This brings us to the bigger picture; we have medicinal weed, medicinal cocaine,... Why not sell hard drugs in a pharmacy? I'm not saying we should make all drugs legal but we know many people buy them on the black market. Meaning, no quality control (You could be buying all kinds of shit), dealers who don't give a damn if a user overdoses (All about the money),...
A lot of people use it for recreational use (You known it, I know it, everybody knows it.). Regulated the stuff I would say. Is somebody who uses LCD once a month an addict? No. Is somebody who uses cocaine once a month an addict? No. Is somebody who uses mushrooms once a month an addict? No. Is somebody who use LCD, cocaine and mushrooms once a month an addict? He or she is starting to get there. But nobody has control over it. When you go to you local dealer does he sell one snort of cocaine or one mushroom? I don't think so (Or I've never met them, also a possibility.)
But if you have a legal place to buy it, you could register the use of a user/patient. You want your monthly trip to Disneyland? No problem. You want your daily trip to wonderland? Here is your social worker.
Except for heroin, I think they should ban heroin.
Would love to hear your opinion!
Greetings
I agree on some statements. But be honest, drugs has ruined a great many number of lives and the addictive nature of it, most are designed to do so, will always lead to a downward spiral. Visit a rehab clinic or a psych ward and you'll see. Anyway, in my opinion if it ever should become legal, drugs should temporarily be used in decreasing dosages to help lower the cravings and ease the path of going clean.

I definitely agree with the fact that drugs have and are ruining a great many number of lives. But, will the use of drugs increase when you regulate them? Even if cocaine was available in a pharmacy, I would still not buy it. But somebody who would normally buy it on the black market, somebody of whom you now have no idea if he's a user, would probably go to a pharmacy. Thus making it easier to take action before he or she has to go to a rehab center or clinic, ...
But it was indeed a bit hard formulated of me to say "Legalise drugs". I'm more like the "regulate drugs" type of guy!
Thank you for your opinion!

This is a really interesting discussion. Although I do think some illicit drugs could potentially be used to cure patients (e.g. ketamine and depression), it does remain a very difficult subject from a regulatory point of view. These types of drugs have a really hard time reaching clinical stages of drug development, let alone reaching the market itself. That being said, I don’t think selling them in a pharmacy for recreational use, is the way to go as they are capable of inflicting more harm than good. But hey, that’s just my opinion :-).

Thank you very much for your opinion! I really agree with the first part of your statement. I didn't really thought about the clinical stages of drug development. Very good point.
For the second part, same question as for @gregan. Will the use of drugs increase when you switch the selling of the drugs from the black market to the white market? Wouldn't it be easier to control drug use? And wouldn't it be easier to take action when things are going wrong?
Greetings

I’m fairly certain drug (ab)use will increase if illicit drugs were to be regulated/legalised. One of the major barriers of not using them is still because they’re illegal. As for controlling their use: yes, you might be able to keep track of who uses what… and how much to a certain extent. Depends whether or not these drugs have to be prescribed by a physician.
