Dear all and especially @rantar
One week ago it was the 10th birthday of my youngest and he desperately wanted a sleep over and escape room. He is a bit scared of things, so I decided to do one at home.
This escape room takes about 45-50 minutes for 9-12 year old kids.
I did not make up a story, you could make one up. They only need to know that they need to find the key to the room to escape and to do so they need to solve puzzles.
They get into the room: Game 1
In the room is a closet role and a strip of paper. If they solve the puzzle they get a code.
Preparation:
Take a closet role , preferably a long one of 25 cm. Write start on one end and finish on the other end. Take a trip of paper: write start on one end end finish at the other end. Role the paper around the role with start on start and finish on finish. Now write on it * the code is 247*
They will need to figure out to role the strip of paper around the role to find the code.
The code 247 will open one of the 2 bags that will be used in the game.
Game 2: bag 1
The code 247 opens one of the locks on one of the bag. You will need to set a lock to the three digit code 247, that is the solution of game 1.
When the kids open the bag they will find a picture of 4 boxes ( or other containers), and a piece of paper that says: the bonus is in a cushion. And three beervilts with numbers.
Preparation:
Boxes:
Buy 4 boxes or containers , make a picture of them and print this out. Put the picture in the bag Put in the 4 boxes papers with the following message
Box 1: find a book...
Box2: read with the bonus...
Box 3: the hidden message ...
Box 4: at the red dot.
The photo of the boxes:
The papers in the boxes:
Make a picture of the boxes and put it in the bag.
Hide the boxes in the room. One box should be easily visible. They will go looking for the others.
Three beervilts
the three beervilts in bag 1 need to have three numbers on them in green red and blue, see picture
Piece of paper
There is a piece of paper in bag 1, with the massage that the bonus is in a pillow ( you could make a riddle of it, if you want). HIDE the UV light in a pillow ( can be a pen with a uv light). The UV light is the bonus.
They will go and search for the boxes and the bonus. They will read the message on the pieces of paper and look for a book. They might try to use the numbers on the beervilts, but that won’t work until they solve the next game. They sometimes might not open all the boxes at once. Just let it be, they will figure it out.
Game 3 the book
Make sure there is at least one book in the room. Make a red dot in one of them and write down with the UV pen next to the dot. * the red numbers in the beervilts is the code!*
Dot in the book
The message in the book in UV:
The code on the beervilts is 729 and opens the second bag.
Game 4: Bag 2
The lock on the second bag needs to be set tp 729, which is the solution on the beervilts.
In the second bag is a piece of paper, a treasure box that needs a key to open, and a decoder
See picture below:
The piece of paper says: look under the lamp this is written in UV, and needs the UV light/ bonus again.
Hide under the lamp an envelope with text that seems gibberage, but can be translated with the decoder. See picture ( cut the two circles and make sure they can rotate)
The text you make needs to say: * find the key behind the chair, that is not a real chair* but then in your own language ( use the decoder to write it). ALSO! make sure it says ** A = N ** to make sure they understand how to set the decoder see picture for an example:
End of the escape room
The chair is not a real chair, it’s a photo of a chair in a picture frame.
Behind the chair in the picture you hide the key of the treasure box. When the kids find this key they can open the treasure box. In the treasure box needs to be the key of the room. Now the kids can escape the room and that ends the game.
We played it with an adult in the room. They had a maximum of 3 questions to help them when they were stuck. If you are playing it with more than 5-6 children, consider to make two teams and let them play in two different rooms at the same time.
Good luck!
Props necessary:
1 One UV pen with UV light.
2 Two number locks you need to set yourself
3 Three Beervilts
4 Two travel bag or boxes that can be locked with the number locks
5 A picture frame that can be opened by children

Thank you, one correction though, I’m a mother, but I hope that doesn’t change your opinion.

Thank you. I had a blast with the kids. They are so much smarter than you think. And it’s funny to see which one goes in the wrong direction, who follows who and who figures it out.
If you have any questions setting up. I’m hsppy to help

It’s worth it. The setup does cost some time, but it was worth it.

Your post was certainly worth the wait. You had some great ideas for puzzles that are a challenge, but still approachable for little younger children.
One question, when you called the light a "bonus" is it required for the rest of the puzzles or just helpful?
I've already been working in my head on an escape room for my girl. You just gave me some more great ideas.

It’s a nescessary item, as they need to read twice with it. would you call it differently?

Upon a second read, I realized misunderstood and was confused. Of course, you need to it to read the clues.

I just needed to give it a name.
I realize it might be a bit confusing when you read it all. I tried to be as clear as possible. It makes sense when you plan it out.
I’m intrigued to know what you already thought up, as probably he wants another one next year. O boy!

It’s really excellent!
Actually the kids thought it was too short, so you might want to add more.
