Are you being consumed with thoughts of regret? Is there something in your life, past or present, that you’ve been constantly struggling with and you just can’t seem to shake it or let it go.
What is Regret?
In simple terms, regret is an emotional state of being that really fucks with your mind. It involves blaming yourself for a bad decision or outcome. You tend to feel like shit about it for a long time. You feel sadness, loss and wishing you could change your actions and do it all over again.
But let’s be fair. Regret can also be a good thing. You see, when you make bad decisions and become engulfed in regret, it can make you refocused and help you correct those mistakes. Sometimes you make bad decisions and realize that the only thing you can do is keep moving forward and hope you can recover it.
It can get tricky though. If your regret is deep, it can be a long, narrow dark path to correcting the bad decision. Like I said, living with regret really sucks.
So how can you fix this? What can you do to maximize damage control and regain your senses and get refocused?
Here are 4 things you can do to cope with regret:
Survival Mindset - Human beings are the most beautiful creations on earth. When you make a bad decision, regret is your brain telling you to take another look at your choices. You have to recognize that regret is just another way your body, soul and mind are telling you to think before you act. It’s trying to teach you not to repeat your regrets.
Let It Go - Yes, that’s right… let shit go. You have to look at a regretful decision as a controlled reaction. Ask yourself, do you have control of the regret? Is there a way to change it right now? If there’s nothing you can do about it, let it go. If there is, then do it and let it go.
You are your worst mental terrorist. Make peace with yourself and let it go.
How? Forgive yourself like you would forgive someone you love. You are human and yes, you make mistakes. Love yourself and continue to your journey.
Own Your Mistakes - Ok, you made a mistake and you’ve acknowledged it. Sometimes decisions are made out of our control. Sometimes you have to make decisions with limited time or knowledge. Timing, pressure, stress… these could all add to the bad decision making.
Most of the time, the regret is worse because you actually thought it all out and you never saw the outcome of your decision coming. Owning the mistake is a great start to getting rid of regret.
Stay Positive - Look, life is a journey. We all fuck up. Take the time to own your mistake and learn from it. Correct what you can and move forward. Don’t worry about what people think or say. What matters is the person staring back at you in the mirror.
Take the time to learn more about you and take better care of yourself. You are the star of your own show. Let’s give everyone a star performance because you really are that fucking good!
Feeling regret is your mind in survival mode. It’s trying to teach you a lesson about yourself. You can learn valuable lessons from analyzing your own behaviors and the consequences of your actions.
Don’t let regret control you. Instead, learn from it and keep moving forward. Making mistakes is part of life and regret is only regret when you do nothing about it.
