After joining DMC as a lecturer, the first batch I taught was K-67. I and my first batch monitor shared the same name- Jobayer. He died during his internship. If I had to remember one student throughout my lifetime, it'll be him. As a teacher, my students are very much like my own children to me. His death was a blow to me like a son's death to his father.
I prefer to mix with my students. In this way, you can know and understand each of them individually. I address each of my students by their names. It helps to drive away whatever uncertainty they feel towards and fills the gaps between us. As a teacher the first thing you have to
comprehend that each student is unique. Their ability to learn and perceive differs from one another so you have to present the topic in a manner that is understandable to them. I know which of my students is the troublemaker one, who is the talkative one, who does mischief at every given chance. If you want to give your best to the students, you must understand their psychology.
Another important thing is to present the topic to the students in an entertaining and interesting manner. Like when I tell them about a virus or a bacteria, I inform them about its history and epidemiology. So presenting it like a story arouses their curiosity. When you're inquisitive about a subject, it can be said that you're already halfway there to achieve success in that particular field. Rather than the discussion of the topic, to fuel curiosity on that topic is where my success lies as a teacher.
In my last class, I don't take lectures. On that day my role is that of a senior brother, not a mentor. I tell them that you'll not be known as DMCans by name, but by your work. If you stick to the labour you all had to undergo to get chance in DMC, only then can you reach the heights of success. Remember that the world will always put you to the test and every time you must prove yourself. So always keep trying and have thirst to know more. It's never too late for anything. Even if you start changing yourself from today, there is no doubt that you'll be rewarded in the days to come.
