During the long summer months, the sun does a great deal of damage to painted surfaces including doors if they face anywhere from East to West.
Unpainted surfaces also dry out and deteriorate in the strong rays.
This type of hanging is made from local reed (looks exactly like cane.) And hung down over the doors to protect and prevent the interior of buildings from heating too much.
As with this door, they are generally left hanging all year round. No one seems to raise them they just squeeze around the side of the blind.
This one is a little short to do its job well, perhaps it is raised slightly to prevent the bottom from getting wet in the winter rains.
