There's always one. This year it was Hazel!
It was sports day. There were six races...
Race 1: Dribbling ball around the plastic plates - excellent as Hazel is great at football and she was one of the fastest.
Race 2: Egg and spoon: Walked rally fast and didn't drop it once.
Race 3: Obstacle Course: Out the gates and back in a flash.
Race 4: Javelin - On her round she throw it the furthest. Good girl.
Race 5: Putting down and picking up bean bags - all fun and smiles
Race 6: The Sprint - uh-oh!
Hazel came second.
Biggest meltdown of the year!
"I should of won, that's not good enough" and the clincher "I'm leaving school"
And the chase was on, before she could get out the school gates.
She was caught by one of the teachers. I went over and we finally encouraged her back to the sports field, but I had to hold on tight as she was still ready to run.
When it was time for the children to go back to classes, I loosened my grip.
And the chase was on again.
She weaved in and out of people.
I was more cautious as I didn't want to knock a child flying.
But I was catching up and one of the other mothers cut her off and she had to run into me.
Finally, the head teacher and deputy tried to convince her that second was not too bad and she told them "She wanted to go to another school", which is her thing when things don't go her way.
Finally the promise of an icepop and and a story from the teacher go her back into class.
An that was my exercise for the day sorted.
Later that afternoon, she came out and told me and the other mum that we'd better learn to run faster as next year if she doesn't win she will throw an even bigger tantrum.
I'll be ready!!
I used to be quite competitive when I was little, but at some point I realised I hated conflict and any competitiveness went straight out the window.
I don't think Hazel will get any less determined as she grows older. It is part of who she is and I love her for it.
