It's Official - NASA Is Going Back To The Moon!

On October 5th, 2017, US Vice President Mike Pence announced that NASA is going back to the Moon. He didn’t provide any other details, just some kind of moonward directed space exploration. And it turns out they won’t be the only ones. The Moon is going to be a busy busy place. The US, Russian, Japanese and European space agencies all have plans for Lunar exploration and habitation. The Moon could be very useful for many scientific experiments and as a base for further exploration of space. By extracting hydrogen and oxygen from the moon's water ice, future space exploration missions could make the Moon a lunar pit stop, refilling their tanks before shooting off farther into the solar system.
               The moon also has many "rare-earth elements" used to make electronic devices. China has expressed interest in establishing moon bases to mine these materials and the successful landing of its Jade Rabbit craft indicates its positive mindset with respect to near-Earth exploration.

Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Virginia.

"We will refocus America's space program toward human exploration and discovery," Pence wrote. "That means launching American astronauts beyond low-Earth orbit for the first time since 1972. It means establishing a renewed American presence on the Moon, a vital strategic goal. And from the foundation of the Moon, America will be the first nation to bring mankind to Mars."

American astronauts have not launched into deep space in the last 45 years, and that NASA is currently relying on Russian vehicles to ferry astronauts to and from the International Space Station. “America seems to have lost our edge in space,” said Pence, “and those days are over.”
