Petition to Stop the slaughter: NO free trade with South American beef!

in life •  7 years ago  (edited)

South America's remaining forests and savannas could soon be cleared for vast cattle herds – all in the name of free trade. An agreement with the Mercosur states would flood the European market with cheap beef and in turn open the South American market for European cars. Please say NO to free trade with Mercosur.
We urgently need to conserve the remaining forests and wild spaces on our planet - we do not need more cheap beef! Beef costs the environment 10 times the resources that other livestock need. Beef is the most inefficient way of feeding the human race.”. One part of the problem is water – it is estimated that about 15,000 litres is needed to produce 1 kg of beef, compared to about 2,500 litres to produce 1 kg of rice!
Please join Rainforest rescue and sign their petition... it will only take a few moments but will really help protect our beautiful planet that has too long been taken for granted.

Hello Samuel,
Thank you very much for your support - if you could resteem this post to spread the message further I would be most grateful - keep well :D

This has been going on for years. Rainforests get clear cut for castle and then the topsoil blows away, creating a huge uphill battle for the forest to grow back.

Hi BHZ,
SO true - but in this age of enlightenment, education and communication made easier by technology we can clearly see the effect these actions have had in the past and must change our ways and let our authorities know we will not forgive any further transgressions upon our wonderful planet Earth!

Keep well :D

Thanks for the upvote and response!

:D

This is a terrible thing and needs our utmost attention. Resteeming and urging others to do the same. Step one STOP EATING BEEF AND BURGERS!
Shame on them!!!!!

Thank you so much for your support and resteem - REALLY appreciated :D

I agree with you regarding the production of beef, the inefficiencies, and the impact on environment.
However, how can the more developed nations tell of force the less developed nations to make the mistakes that they have already made - deforestation and pollution as well as the mass consumption of beef?

We can and must help developing nations with technology and innovations that make it easy to thrive without making the terrible mistakes we have made.

Among the urgent environmental crisis, I think the most neglected is the indestructible trash, plastics and styrofoam containers, that are killing the world's oceans and life there in and sea birds.

Hi freedomshift
Yes plastics and their use in packaging etc should be illegal! We have MANY cheaper and more environmentally friendly options. Plastic bags from peoples daily shopping are choking and killing our beautiful wildlife. I urge all to stop this madness - take your reusable bags to the shops - and select products that do not use plastic packaging.

Keep well :D

Quite right Sallybeth! - there is indeed much fantastic work being done - we must highlight and increase awareness and funding for these wonderful projects.

people (@icedrum, @sallybeth23) who are aware of these global problems and care about the environment should collaborate and share ideas.
These problems have their roots many decades ago, so, solving them will take a concerted and persistent effort and on a global scale.
As I commented before, I am not being negative. I am simply pointing out that we can all share ideas and to deal with them on a personal level.
As the saying goes: "an ounce of prevention is worth ..."

In a way, we can and should praise those massive efforts. However, we should also encourage the little things that we all can and should do ...

Have you read the good news re plastic in the oceans? Here is just one example- there are various bodies working tirelessly to clean the oceans.... you can donate and help if you like 😉
https://4ocean.com/products/4ocean-bracelet
This is just a link to people who have cleaned more than 300,000 tons of plastic from the ocean but they are just one company. If you google search cleaning oceans you will find plenty more.
It’s not finished but progress is being made and we should be aware of the positive things going on not just the negative I feel
Have a beautiful day 🌈💛⭐️🦋🌴

My college degree and my first job and profession is Chemical Engineering and worked on coal to natural gas conversion / processing plant - project which is now Dakota Gas company.
So, I am deeply aware of all aspects of these problems. The root of the trash, pollution and the destruction of nature can all find their root to a lack of cradle-to-grave cost benefit analysis and most of these problems originate from short-term profit and reward feedback systems - the quarterly earnings and annual bonuses of corporations and organisations promoting them - "little" things such as bottled water, plastic bags, styrofoam cups, plastic nets ...
They do cut cost - why? The cost of disposal and recycling has been someone else's costs and problems.
I am well aware of efforts to deal with the trash in the oceans, but, it is still too little and too late - same for deforestation.

You are absolutely right: it is the cost of disposal that has not been factored in by industrialists - a criminally shortsighted position that can and must change.

If there is a will, a big "IF", just add the cost to each item that we do not want to go to the waste disposal problem/ pile. There have been on and off attempts of deposits on these items such as bottles and cans.
In some stores, they will charge you some money if you want plastic bag and some don't even provide it without any government regulation requiring it.
But, in the end, it is everyone's responsibility to be aware and recycle and reuse or just avoid their use when feasible.

I am not being negative on this by any means. I have been promoting cradle-to-grave cost benefit analysis and accounting - responsibility.
It is too much to write about in a comment.

I believe we are not too late - we have lost many species and habitats - but it is not too late to act!

Really great to meet you freedomshift - have a wonderful day :D

I appreciate your optimism. If you run the numbers, the global environmental problem is far greater than the global debt crisis ...
