Samuel had gotten the fourth position in a class of twenty five and his parents were scolding him. This scenario plays out in several households across the globe, where several children are scolded for not being the best in their class. In some countries, where the government has no qualms with children being beaten and the principle "Spare the rod, spoil the child" is prevalent, children can get beaten for not living up to the expectations of their parents.

Of course, everyone wants the best for his child but most people are more interested in recreating themselves or making their children into what they wanted to be and could not be. Instead of praising a child's achievement, they scold him for not being what they wanted. You'll find parents who will scold their children for different things which might include getting the silver medal in a literary competition, getting the second position in class,et cetera. Some parents will even stop their children from partaking in any activities, in which they do not triumph and move them from one activity to another.

Some parent's are not actually interested in the happiness of their children at all. They are rather interested in seeming to have perfect children, so as to please their friends or outrank their friends in the crazy unspoken game of "Who is more sophisticated?". They will drive their children to the limit, forcing the children to become robots, in their quest for perfection.

These parents determine every aspect of their child's life, which includes the clothes the child will wear, the way the child will speak, the schools he will attend, the classes he will take, etc. Some parents even go as far as to select spouses for their children and these spouses are usually children of their friends, who were also pawns in the "Who is more sophisticated?" game.
The painful fact is that the feelings of these children are hardly taken into consideration. If you ask me, these kind of parents would be much better at raising pedigree animals than they are at raising children. No one cares about the happiness of these children and these really affects several people. Imagine the case of a boy named Derek who can't get married to the girl he loves, so as to fulfill his parents' wish and therefore goes ahead to marry Ashley, the daughter of his mother's best friend. If at a point, Derek snaps and decides to divorce Ashley or if he starts cheating on her, Is he really at fault? Sure, Ashley might also be a victim of manipulative parents but as humans, we handle different situations in different manners.
I don't have a problem with you trying to discipline your child. However, rather than scold a child for every little mistake he makes, wouldn't it be much better to praise him for every effort he makes at ensuring something works? If a child decides to be a actor, you should encourage him in his chosen path, rather than try to make him into become a doctor because you are or wanted to be one but could not. You should not destroy your child's happiness just for the sake of looking good to your friends. You should not force your children into relationships with people they don't love, so as to avoid bitter divorces later in the children. They are humans, no robots and they should be able to make their own mistakes with the awareness that you are always available to guide them when they hit walls. Give them a right to their own lives and let them be happy. You should not be the kind of parent who neglect their children when they decide to tread their own parts.
