LIVING WITH VALUES SERIES: INDUSTRY
Generally, it is understood that each and everyone has a set way of seeing the world. Which is true; we all have a unique perspective. What is it that forms our unique world view? I personally think that we things that we ¨value¨ in life ultimately defines our world view. We ultimately become what we value because our values are our standard for interacting with the world and others.
Today, I would like to share with you a special value that I call: Industry.
As defined by the Merriam Webster dictionary, Industry is:
1 : diligence in an employment or pursuit; especially : steady or habitual effort
2 a : systematic labor especially for some useful purpose or the creation of something of value
Another way to say this is that, Industry = Hard work.
A person that values Industry is a dedicated person to their work. More than just working to have a means of survival, I think that purposeful work plays a key role in the human experience. Many people may dream of not working for the rest of their lives, but I think that is just vain. There are indications in The Bible or words from wise men that give us the idea that man in created to work. These happen to be some of my favorite Bible verses:
Genesis 3:19
By the sweat of your face You will eat bread, Till you return to the ground, Because from it you were taken; For you are dust, And to dust you shall return."
Psalms 104:22
22 The sun rises, and they steal away;
they return and lie down in their dens.
23 Then people go out to their work,
to their labor until evening.
24 How many are your works, Lord!
In wisdom you made them all;
the earth is full of your creatures.
I found it fascinating that Kind David, the Psalmist, gives us an example that goes like, just as the beasts roam the earth, and the birds fly, so does man also go to work everyday; its what we do. Humans work. From the work of our hands, we derive the food we eat, the resources for pleasure, and we can also get a deep sense of purpose. More than just work and "passing the years," if you work on something you are passionate about; this leads to a lifestyle of contribution. I like to say that its not about the salary, its about meaningful work.
Mike Shinoda from Linkin Park and Fort Minor says it this way:
In spite of the fact that some people still think that they know him
But fuck 'em, he knows the code, it's not about the salary
It's about reality and making some noise
Making a story,making sure his clique stays up
So I say to you all: Value Industry. Work hard, smart and long to create something better of this world.
Personally I aspire to work for a long time. I may have a second career, but I won't retire. I hope to work until I die with my head down, sitting at my office.
Quick note: Apparently, individuals who refuse to retire also have a better chance at living longer. This is no surprise. All of us know some individual that just kept on working. My grandpa is 80 years old and his day is not done until he does "an honest day's job."
