I stumbled upon this person today who is making in excess of $500/post - WANT TO KNOW HOW?
Out of the ordinary during my normal curation routine I found this person. I was so enthralled with the quality of the post, I upvoted her, and left a comment.
I did that without realizing how popular her post was, or how popular she was as a blogger. I was just happy with the post and you'll see why...
To my surprise, she responded that it took her:
TWO WEEKS TO COMPILE HER POST!!
That's right. She didn't want to publish it until the photos were right, it was edited correctly... All parts of the story were in place.
This is what she said in response to my comment:
...and this is what I replied to her:
Now this could seem like a fairy tale... like one for the history books. A perfect success story.
HERE'S WHAT IS GOOD:
- the post quality
- she is true to her word. She doesn't post things 4 or 5 times a day
- Her posts are very deep, in depth, detailed, and fun to read
- Look at the top picture... 8 days inbetween posts. She doesn't over post... She quality posts...
HERE'S WHAT SOME TECHNICAL PEOPLE MAY NOTICE:
- They might say she's getting paid too much
- She has too many followers
- She's using vote buying services (buildawhale, upme, booster, postpromoter, boomerang, etc)
LISTEN. STOP THINKING AND PLEASE READ MORE:
..
If you're a speed reader of posts...and you did this to mine just now, and hers too... You're not going to get it.
STOP scrolling your mouse. Put your hands under your bum, and touch nothing and read...
You probably missed it already, so I will repeat it again.
I ALREADY said this... above.... and again, I will repeat it just for you speed readers...
In the future, as the steem platform grows and matures, it is quality work "just like @purepinay" that takes 2 weeks to write that will get paid the best in the long run.
When millions of users are here... it's going to be posts just like hers that stand out from everyone else.
So your notice is now.
...and this includes me too....
IMPROVE YOUR QUALITY OF POSTS... or one day... easy money today is easily gone tomorrow. Build your skills, put out better content. Curators are going to expect more from all of us as time goes on...
Thank you for @purepinay aka Filisteemian for your wonderful blog.
..
After upvoting posts all day... your post about the "Waterfalls of Valencia" was the best I found.
Congratulations on a job well done!!
If I were interested in travel blogs at all I'd follow her right away. I put a fair amount of time in my posts, but I can't say I'm working on them for weeks. At best I'd work on them for two days I think. Sadly they still never turn out like I want them to, but they end up being 'okay' so that will have to do for now, until I figure out how to make them better. But yeah, I think if you keep producing such outstandingly high content over a long period of time you'll eventually get where you should be. It's always sad to feel like you're not getting the attention you deserve, but if you look at it from a wider perspective you'll eventually find that good effort only goes unnoticed if you don't keep it up.

Make quality posts and the followers will come. Not in 2 or 3 days... but in many months.
See how many followers I have? I started with 10. Read through my blog... not all my posts are good.. but many are... and that's why I have over 3,000 followers now.
It takes time. I started June 2016... but if you keep putting out quality, people will follow to get more quality.

@uber-dragon: I know how it feels to not get the attention you deserve, because I was the same when used to get less than a dollar for days or weeks I spent creating a content but I didn't quit. I decided to build my network and invested my money here (my bank is empty). To be honest, my future depends on steemit. I haven't even cash out since day one (it's a long story). I hope you continue on creating good content. Btw, am glad you're using your own language on your blog :)
@ezimedia: about the large # of followers on the other platforms, I only have 300+ on Instagram and less than 10 on fb, hehe... I am a full-time Steemian. When I started steemit, I barely slept because I was constantly commenting on other Steemians blog, I was building my network (followers). I also took a lot time to learn the platform. You have to write blog, I only see re-steemed posts on your page. ^_- Someday you'll be able to make more than $20, you'll learn how. :)
@intelliguy
I am overwhelmed, you don't know how much this means to me to get a recognition from you and everyone on your comments.
I am constantly learning from everyone's opinion through their comments and I really appreciate the time and effort.
Following you now, @intelliguy. Thank you for inspiring me.

While I agree with this overall sentiment, it isn't totally set in reality. It would be awesome if the people with the best content, in five years say, ended up being the ones with the best payouts, but the way this website works, that just isn't the case. The users who will be doing best in 5 years are the ones who are raking in SBD and converting it to Steem. In 5 years they will be the new dolphins or even whales, and regardless as to whether or not their content is amazing, they will still be pulling in money by either upvoting themselves, or just due to the sheer number of followers they will have accumulated by then. This platform doesn't reward quality, it rewards investment. The people who put the most amount of their own money, or their own earned income back into the Steem pool, are the ones who end up the best off. Not to be a Debbie Downer, but I doubt very much that that will change. (Oh and I may be a speed reader, but I got the jist of what you were saying the first time around.)
Also, I think some people can go over the top, and that's not everyone's cup of tea. Quality content is surely grand, but there is something to be said about daily content as well. Some people like to consume content daily and don't want to wait a week in between each post, and it's not necessarily fair to assume that the longer it takes someone to produce content, the better it will be.
Admittedly I sometimes throw together a post, but for the ones that I work a long time on, it wouldn't matter if I spent 2 hours or 2 days on it (most specifically my music posts) I am known as the "one take wonder" in a lot of studio recordings I have done, and I believe that doing something 20 times wouldn't make it any better than the fact that I can do it right the first time. For me, efficiency can equal quality.
In the long run, Steemit does need way better content, but then dtube and Steemit need to get their shit together on how to reward said content. Not everyone can rely on spending a week on writing a really great blog and making so much from the payout that they can justify that time spent. Very few have that kind of time to gamble.

Everyone and everything is so different. Some people earn tons on just an image yet others get 5c when they create an amazing, well researched post. Others show a little cleavage and get a ton of votes, others pay to get them.
When I was a practising abstract artist, the paintings that took me 20 mins to create sold for a lot more than the ones that took me several layers and sittings. There are no rules, but simply whatever you do, do it well.
I'm extremely new to to blogging, it's not my forte. I'll get better.

I totally agree, its not about the money, its the ideas we share with each other, good quality post goes a long way, and also its a good learning experience on how we can better everyday. Since i joined steemit, those good quality post still has an impact in my life, and some a was able to apply to my everyday life, or maybe change my perception on the ways things are. I usually spent that amout of time as well 2 to 4 hrs, but i also detox myself from social media once or twice a week.

@karinxxl don't fault yourself that way. I appreciate your blogs... they are very good. In this case, this person who took two weeks did it better, but that shouldn't be a fault on you for the good stuff you put out. So don't see it that way.
The general lesson here isn't what you're doing today, or what I'm doing today, or what she is doing today.
It's where its going to go. So as long as you know as more users join, we both (you and I) need to step it up a notch to beat the crowd. That's all.

No but its good to be aware of how you can make from a good post to an excellent post! Those nuances are going to be thing in the end that will matter. Small details that take time, that might be annoying to do, will make the difference.

First thank you for this post. I agree with you that quality is always the winner in the long run. But a few additional comments. 1. Some people are just better writers than others and can get things done more quickly, so time can be an inaccurate judge of quality. I can write some fast and I am also working on a post that is taking me more than 2 weeks to complete because of the background data needed. But it varies. 2. Also a great challenge especially for newer people is that Steemit (from everything I see) does not necessarily reward you for quality. It can, but more often than not, those with higher rating get 100x more attention than those with lower ones. This causes frustration for those of us who have to choose between other things and posting. I think what Steemit trains people to do unintentionally s to do everything they can to get a high rating and then everyone will pay for your posts. Again I believe it is unintentional and I appreciate that there are many within the community like you who are interested in quality and want to see more of it because in the end if it is not here, there will be no community or interest in the platform. It has to stand on its quality. So for me, I try and strike a balance. I put up some quick and interesting posts and take some time to write long ones. I also have a friend here @davidallenjones who is a professional blog writer. He writes more than 150 stories a month and contributes here as well. We came to this conclusion together. Put in the time and perfect the skills, but also understand how things work, or all the hard work may not pay off. I appreciate your comments and the meaning behind it. Also I am following you.

I love this post so damn much @intelliguy , id like to apologize for not being as structured with my blog as i should be, your post was on point. Someday post like that will be the only ones paid for, theyre well crafted, the effort is above and beyond and even just those two things are so lacking in todays culture i havent been able to hold more than one or two good conversations about cryptocurrency , politics or really anything stimulating in real life with anybody other than my 1 year old in months. I feel at home here on steemit because the people worth following are always so smart and interesting and I really need to just sit down tomorrow and really delve into my account and where i want to take my blog from here forward. I totally have already had your point of view before but i also was discouraged by some of the power that spam posters have on the platform. Steemit, blockchains, information, are so importantly intertwined into my daily life that it drives my irl friends insane. Im glad i have a place i can talk about it. I respect it enough to know that what your saying should drive me to write better, not for myself but the people who have to see and want to read it. Much love.

Hey, loved the post!
That is the exact type of content I upvote as well. I take a similiar strategy(not 2 weeks..) but I definitely spend time on the articles I write. It's a process, like you said, you have to first come to an idea that you would want to write about. Then compile photos and information and write the post. On average I'd say a few hours for a post for me is normal.
The only thing that's upsetting, but normal for a person new to the platform is the post getting lost and drowned out. I've spent a few hours on a post before, to have it not got attention the first hour it was live and get lost in the sea of other posts. It is just demotivating - to spend a good amount of time producing a piece only for no one to see it. I get it though, its part of the process and journey here on steemit.
Again, I loved the post. Far often I can tell when a person took 2 minutes create a post..which I guess could be fine given a situation... but you know what I was getting at! :)

I especially like well written and correlated comments as well. So many easy one line comments, just to raise a post count, but with no additive value.
But alas it is modern society where they have stripped most of the ability to do quality work over quantity.

That was a lovely post ! I actually work the complete opposite way. I am a musician/singer and I offer people song request where they can win SBD when their song is picked. It means sometimes I have only 1 day or 2 to work on something, and I have to publish it even if it's not perfect. I still think that I deliver quality content but it's just personal opinion. I know I have that bad habit to start self doubting once I procrastinate so I am forcing myself to be at peace by pressing publish :)

You are an intelligent guy @intelliguy. Great post, very informative. Content is king, yet having a large number of followers is a close second. You can have the greatest content and if you only have a few followers, then it will take time to be recognized. The walkaway from this post is to provide very good content, and eventually it will be recognized and you will have additional followers. An empire doesn't start out as one, it has to grow into one. Same thing here on steemit. Also, in closing, I think that, for myself, I want to provided very good content, that speaks to my heart and others. That moves readers to think and act. To question, and find answers and solutions.

With all due respect, post quality cannot be the only road to riches. I follow someone (@dullhawk) who posts absolutely mind-blowing stuff daily and yet rarely pulls in more than $2 a post. I'd like to think I put decent effort into my own content as well, and I rarely break $1.00.
Something else got her a dedicated following that regularly supports her content. Maybe it was a resteem by someone with a lot of followers, maybe it was using bots to edge towards the top of "trending" or "hot" pages (anyone know what the difference is between the two, by the way?), maybe it was just by regularly blogging and interacting with others. And I'm of course not saying quality content isn't important. But something else got her a big enough following to regularly pull $500 a post. It couldn't have been quality alone.

God bless you for this comment, I thought as much too, you took the words right out of my mouth, most times you put in countless number of hours compiling a quality post and won't even make $1. Very discouraging and next time, you won't be as motivated to invest that amount of time and energy into compiling another post. Not saying the quality of post doesn't matter, of course it does, are we going to overlook the fact that she built herself an audience first whether organically or not, that I don't know for sure. Not taking any credit away from her cos which ever way she did it involves hardwork and strategic planning. She has the exposure and quite easy to pull that amount per post. Believe me, if she decides to make 2-3 post a day, she would also pull close to that amount too. She is easily noticeable cos of her huge following and trending post, newbies generally crowd around such people, thereby increasing her audience. I followed her the very first day I was on Steem, I noticed how popular she was and I followed her even without reading her blog and posts. Am sure lot of newbies are like that too. To state also she puts in enough energy and effort into her writing kudos to her cos she does this knowing if she puts up crap, she would still rack up votes and comments. I kinda like her though but the writer suggesting only great content can get you there is abit misleading. You need that audience. You could imagine thousands of quality post that don't get seen or noticed in the platform.

No it wasn't... everytime she gets paid she re-invests her payouts into upvotes again.
But that wasn't the point of the story. 3 of you now have done this:
If you read this single post and ignore payouts, and how she got paid so well...
You'll see why I was saying a good, full, quality post, deserves to be awarded in the future as steemit matures:

This is not about:
It is about
...and if you get the point... of where quality is "going to go"... we'll both stop talking about bots and re-steems and "trending" and "hot"... because none of it is key to the point I was trying to make.

Unfortunately for me I have used steemit as a substitute to Instagram, facebook and twitter roled into one and the main reason for this is that I find the decentralisation of curation totally gels with me.
I like to think that one day I will make some dough from here but I am also too honest for myself so have and will probably not put as much effort in my posts. But, and this is a bit BUT I actually enjoy reading and watching peoples posts as opposed to me sharing content that I have don't like travel and things of that nature.

Hey @intelliguy , this is great post that will surely be helpful to many newbies. I will like to add a quote here, that may be helpful to many bloggers on this platform;
Why You Should Upvote Comments!!!!
I've noticed alot of people doesnt reward their followers, and their commenters on here.
It's a shame.
When someone takes the time to not only read your post but to leave a comment. Even throwing your small vote their way does a lot of great things...
They are More Likely To Follow You;
I'm not saying you should upvote every single comment you get. I try and look for those that I feel provide value to the post. When they see that you upvoted their comment and they will be rewarded as a result. This encourages them to follow you; Then you'll have a regular on your post!
You can grow your followers so that they can grow you;
If they choose to keep their Steem in their account, They may power it up. If you continuously are upvoting their great comments, then they will steadily grow overtime. Their vote will be worth even more, and they'll be able to upvote you, The upvotes you gave them helps them grow, so they have more power on the platform.

lol, both of those posts were nearly completely ignored until she upvoted the shit out of them with bots... And she is cute. I don't care about people using bots, and I am happy she is cute. What was missing for me was why I would care about her opinion.
I thought it was hysterical that her advice on who to vote for witness mattered to anyone. I think I even flagged it.
Proves we all have different interests.

Talk specifically about "Waterfalls of Valencia"
That one particular post I identified. I didn't want to drudge up her entire history. That single post is the point of the article and the reason why we should all consider more putting more effort into quality...
If you do that, do you understand the point I was trying to make?

I'm actually more interested in hearing what others have to say than the pictures. I didn't read the one on the "Waterfalls of Valencia", but I did read the other one which you have pictured.
I get the point, I just don't care how people format their pictures. I care more about what they have to say, and if it is interesting... makes me think, teaches me another position, snippets from another culture. Her impressive picture formatting was completely lost on me.
Since she took that amount of time to put it together, I am happy you didn't miss it.
To be fair, I will read the other post. It isn't exactly digging up her whole history to make a comment about one of the posts that YOU posted about her. It was 50% of what you highlighted and the main reason she earned what she earned. :)

After I identified why she earned what she earned, I know why. But what she does is re-invests her blog post profits back into upvotes.
Why she does it doesn't give her an unfair advantage from quality posts really...
A quality post is a quality post whether it makes $0 or $500
..that's the point I'm trying to make. Even for me to hear. :)

Yes, it is an area I should work on as well. I just care so little about it. :)

I am not sure if you are being sarcastic or serious now. Oh boy

Haha! Sorry about that. I do tend to be sarcastic so that was totally fair.
However, in this case.. I was admitting it is "part" of the work we are doing and a piece I should work on.
In total seriousness, I should really work on my polish.

I have but one thing to point out though, imagine if this incredible author spent two weeks on a post and got merely 0.01 sbd for it. Then 2 weeks later another amazing story like this and 0.01 sbd again. Over time her audience may grow but will they be able to upvote her older posts? Nope, those are done with. It's only natural that people test the waters with 10 minute blogs first and then jump in and go full time if it works out. As of now Steemit itself promotes the model where authors have to constantly churn out new posts of various quality because they only have 6 days to earn their rewards. It's alright for news and terrible for other forms of media.
P.S. but I'm sure it's been mentioned here already multiple times so feel free to ignore.

Picture a singer, homeless trying to get noticed in a Subway or train station
I have one thing to point out though. Imagine this incredible singer kept singing two weeks in the subway and merely got 0.01 cent for it. Then two weeks later, an amazing crowd found her and 0.01 cent again.
Over time her audience may grow but will they be able to donate to her older appearances at that same location weeks ago? Nope, those are done with.
It is only natural that people test the waters with singing 10 second songs first and then jump in and go full time if it works out.
As of now singers have to constantly bellow out new songs of various quality because they only have a limited time to get noticed or get donations on the street. It's alright for news and terrible for other forms of media.

There's one flaw with this example though: the singer can sing the same song every day over and over again because in the streets it isn't called spamming, the streets don't keep history of your repertory.
