Sunday musings: Sunday morning beer and judgmental thoughts

in life •  6 years ago  (edited)

There is a strange way how people hold others to different standards than themselves. Sort of like this old book said

"And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? ".

But it is human nature and I have caught myself doing it. Yes dear reader, as perfect as I may be, I too have my moments of humanity.

Family anecdote: as far as I can remember, my parents liked to drink a beer with Sunday morning breakfast. it was a sort of thing, tradition is to strong a word. A habit. And it is something I picked up, to the point that one of the more enjoyable meals of the week is Sunday breakfast, especially if it is sunny and slightly warm, the perfect Sunday breakfast means good eggs, good coffee and a good cold beer.

In Bucharest, there are a bunch of farmers markets, but this are not the posh, hipster things they are in the US or Britain. Just a place where people from the neighboring villages come to sell produce they grow in their gardens. Most of these markets have some dive bars around them, where people tend to eat and drink. Usually the sellers wake up at 4 AM in order to come to the city, set up shop and sell their wares. And as such, 11 AM is usually pretty late for them.

So to get to the actual story. Here I was at about 11 AM after having breakfast with some friends at a hipster breakfast place and having, off course, consumed the standard beer. I decided to pass by the market to get some stuff and I go past a market bar where a bunch of people were drinking beer, and I find myself judging: look at these people, drinking so early!

This rather surprised me. Just because it was a cheaper bar with people in work clothes does not make it that different from hipster beer I'd just had. This made me think about the tendency to judge people for the very things we do, because it is somehow different when we do it. Now, this is a quick thought and does not have any sort of big life lesson. It is something that made me think, and I wanted to share it. Now, off to drink my Sunday afternoon wine. Cheers.
