Land Grabs in Zimbabwe - It's happening again

in life •  7 years ago

I am not sure if a lot of people on the platform know what a land grab is, or if it is just an African thing. A few years ago, the Zimbabwe government decided to take the white-owned farms where the families had been farming for a few generations. Yes, they arrive with armed men and you can either die or leave with nothing.

I have a few friends who lived there and had to leave with nothing. They basically had to take the clothes they had on them and leave their farms. Some of these friend have lost many family members who did not want to leave. I have been to Zimbabwe a few times and I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of every visit. The Zimbabwean people are such nice friendly people.

How is it then that this can happen in such a beautiful country. Well, their leader is not the clearest thinker of all time.

To my shock when I opened the local online news site, I read that it is starting to happen again.

Rusape – Heavily armed Zimbabwean riot police this week besieged the property of a white commercial farmer, Robert Smart outside Rusape town and forcefully evicted him from his farm.

President Robert Mugabe’s ruling Zanu-PF party's youth and suspected members of the dreaded Central Intelligence Organisation were also present during the eviction.

Workers at Lesbury Farm, about 26km west of Rusape, alleged that police fired live ammunition and teargas to disperse the labourers and villagers who had gathered at the farm in solidarity with Smart.

Some of the workers and villagers alleged that they were assaulted by the police, but no serious injuries were recorded.

One of the security guards at the farm, Reuben Chimombe, told News24 that the police officers and Zanu-PF youths ransacked Smart’s farmhouse before removing all the household property and throwing it on the roadside about 200m away.

I sincerely hope that this was just a random case and that this is not the start of the next phase of ridiculous land grabs.

Mugabe has done nothing good for ZImbabwe, it was a country that had a huge farming economy before the land grabs. I do however understand why he was able to get the majority of his people to do this. Zimbabwe was known as Rhodesia and it was named this after Cecil Rhodes who along with the British back in the 1800's took control over it along with other surrounding countries. So that was in fact the first land grab by the ruling white class that was left behind to govern. It was only a matter of time that the people of Zimbabwe would want their land back. The only problem with that was none of them knew how to run farms and so the country itself has been in ruin ever since. That and ruling dictator who is worse than the white ruling class he took over from.

Sad and uneducated they choose the worst for there future and blame
others for there misfortune history repeats itself !

Mugabe is an old man and will naturally die soon and his country will be free from his grasp ....his family will choose bitcoin to replace the trillion dollar zimbabwe bill and save zimbabwes economy from more hyper inflation.....crypto currency is the new african Dollar

I also hope for you that this was the last case and there are sometimes crazy people who do not distinguish between good and evil and can take and take people out of their house and throw them in threats I just shudder every time to see how bad this world can be and how many people can go down and be just bad I do not understand how they go to sleep at night and can close their eyes and fall asleep I could not sleep If I knew that people do not have a roof in this world It just does not make sense What is happening in this world Unfortunately I wish you all the best in the world and do not know any more grief and grief you will enjoy Happy all your life

Will they get their benefits what they promising?
While the benefits for international actors are obvious, the benefits to African countries may not be as apparent. For example, one of the most important patterns to notice in these transnational land acquisitions is the limited importance of financial transfers. A recent report (FAO, IIED and IFAD) revealed that the main benefit to the host country is perceived to be investor commitments like employment creation and infrastructure development. Similarly, the study indicates that such land agreements can provide macro-level benefits like GDP growth and greater government revenue, raise local living standards, and bring technology, capital and market access. In addition, improving the productivity of African agriculture undoubtedly serves as a huge point of interest for governments seeking foreign investment and in turn transnational land leases.

i think this is a differenttype of trans national land acquisition?

Is that really happen to Zimbabwe?

We live in a wonderful world that is full of beauty, charm and adventure. There is no end to the adventures that we can have if only we seek them with our eyes open

Wow, that is a sad story. Nobody nor the Gov should have the right to do that. Thank you for sharing.

This is very good post!

I didnt know about land grabs. How do the local (black) people view the act? Is there rivalry between all white and all black people? Or maybe rivarly between two parties of black people, one white haters and one white sympathizers?

This has been going on for a long time, and will continue, unfortunately. Rhodesia was Africa's bread basket before all of this happened, but now they are in desperate need of food. South Africa started with this same policy and already farmers have left their farms for their own safety. This gem of Africa is fast turning into a violent country where no one is safe.

I upvote and follow.

The same thing is beginning to occur in South Africa as well. It's the marxist ideology combined with racism.

Kenya and Mozambique are welcoming these white farmers, and providing them free land. They see the value in their productivity.

:(
please be safe, land grabbing is just awefull, hope victims get justice :)

Wow, this is totally screwed up. I really hope this is just a random case of it and that it doesn't happen again. I've never heard of this before, but seriously, this is just terrible. Thank you for spreading the word on this and sharing it!

That would just be hilariously terrible if the land grabs started again. It's been such a colossal failure for Zimbabwe, I can't imagine any leader enacting the same incompetent policy except for maybe...Robert Mugabe. He's proven time and time again he is unfit to lead that country, but until the people there realize this, Zimbabwe will just continue to crash and burn.

This is very sad.

Bad cases always happen there, how we will build peace in this world, it still many people do not care to others.

Wow that just seems ridiculous. I hope there is more to the story that is not being told. If your government is just able to come in and grab your home and land that is no government at all but a mafia. Was the farmer not paying taxes, or what was the reasoning that the government gave that they were able to come in and take this mans farm?

That's so scary. Why this is happening? Whose fault behind this? Why people don't understand it's not good to hurt someone.. that is just the loss of building, trust, stuff everything. It only provoke people to do wrong stuff.

very nice post, thanks foe sharing, its my goodness i fount it, thanks

This is very heart breaking. All those farms that was taken are now just mere fields. I know people who got evicted from their farm in Limpopo. The Farm that was in their family for years (from their gandpa) was forced away from them in a similar way.

I can understand downtrodden people don't want to wait for generations to have the opportunity to own a farm, especially as the people who have it now did nothing worthy of owning it except for having forebears that were bloodthirsty and ruthless.
But the only way for Zimbabewans (all of them) to have a fair society is if everyone has a fair shot at doing well and owning property through legitimate purchase, in the end that's the only solution, but it's going to be slow.

This is a disgrace, I think it is the most low thing to do to just take someones things because you think you can. I really hope it is a ones of thing. I also hope that that does not happen in our own country.

And the real sad thing is that a productive working farm that is supplying food and jobs will most probably be reduced to almost nothing.

This is why Zimbabwe has gone from being the breadbasket of Africa to barely being able to feed itself. It's not unlike what happened in the former Soviet Union.

There have been a lot of comments about this being racists, unfortunate, etc... It is simply a rejection of private property by a tribal regime. Government exists to protect private property (at a minimum at least). Without recognizing that there won't be safety and calm let alone prosperity. A regime that doesn't respect property is, on net, worse for the average person than a relatively prejudiced regime - look at Rhodesia vs Zimbabwe.

If the majority goes along with this, then they are only to blame for the inflation, poverty, nourishment, etc... Zimbabwe is just a living example - albeit an agrarian one - of Atlas Shrugged.

This is really sad, i´ve heard they were doing this in South Africa, no Zimbabwe.
Long are the times in the 1970´s were people said Zimbabwe was the breed basket of Africa, now Mugabe destroyed the country, i just hope it get´s better, upvoted and followed

This is terrifying stuff. I am not a land owner but I'd like to be one day, and I'd like to know we live in a world safe from this kind of shit!

White people have been telling the world loud and clear how racist and evil we are , and how much we are sorry for everything and all the bad we've added the world. Why would anyone want whities around? They even hate themselves.

That's a bit racist don't you think? Don't speculate and assume all white people are the same, just like not all brown / black people are the same. Just because a handful of people are dick heads doesn't mean the rest are.

I was being sarcastic :)
