Some time ago I wrote a post called "What I Want To Get Out Of Steemit" which basically stated that I am hoping to become more disciplined in finishing creative projects, to be part of what's 'happening' in the tech, and also to make supplementary income.
Those are all fine and dandy. Nowadays I'd include that I want to meet interesting people from around the world and focus on becoming a better writer.
But @rok-sivante (a regular contributor around these parts, if you weren't aware) left a comment which made me come back to it.
"a distinction in the headline wording, "what do we want to get out of..."
the major difference that will unlock success for most people is a refocus of the question - shifting thinking from what we want to get, to what can we give...
the giving piece has to come first.
for the rewards, of course. but also for the personal satisfaction - giving our creativity, pouring our hearts out, contributing, serving, supporting, and investing in the community... THAT'S the path to getting what we truly want out of it all..."
Since writing What Do I Want To Get.. I have found myself naturally gravitating towards the 'giving' side, at least some of the time. Rok is right, we can't just be in it to gain, we have to be providing something of quality for other people. Not necessarily in a transactional way — "I post, you pay me" — but something of substantial value.
So here's what I'd like to give on Steemit.
To use whatever platform is available to me to highlight the work of others.
This is why the Steemit Photo Challenge was born. It is a weekly photography contest held over the weekend where prizes upwards of 200 Steem are handed out to the winners and honourable mentions. My goal was stated early on, to generate original content in the photography tag, and to create a hype around a tag that would enable people to get noticed more easily and perhaps get more views on their work. Of course, it helps to win the contest, because you're given a decent about of Steem which you can either cash out or power up to increase your influence.
I'm currently working on another project that, with the support of the community, has the potential to be a big event in somebody's life.
To encourage high quality original work being shared by high quality motivated humans.
This is not a charity. You have to work for what you get. Yet I know what it's like to feel overlooked, and so I endeavour to actively look for stuff that interests me rather than letting it just fall into my lap. I can't be constantly looking, of course, and my upvote is a pittance — I'm not a 'whale' and probably never will be. The goal isn't to become a 'whale' but to have a good reputation for authentic exchange, and quality work. If you do that, I think you'll be fine. As my reputation (and steem power) grows, I will be able to give a bigger boost to the type of content providers that I enjoy most.
To give is to receive.
Every good list has at least three items. By honing my craft in writing, photography, and whatever else, I am able to provide better and better work for others to enjoy. This, obviously, is something that I would (hopefully) be rewarded for. Nothing is for free, unless there's no demand for it — then you can't even give it away! By providing good stuff and interacting with others, the level of work displayed on the platform rises as we get better, so it must be a priority for me not to just post shite, but to actively increase my skill! You shouldn't post shite either. So get working, and those with the motivation and the quality will provide good experiences for others, as well as reap the rewards. Focusing only on 'making money' is the wrong approach unless you are already an established personality. Focusing on quality, consistency, and authenticity is the way to go.
What do you have to offer?
What would you like to give the users of this platform?
What I'm giving is a constant help to users and response to posts that are original. I spend too much time here since it's my work holiday. I go through new posts every few hours and open up to 15 that are in first 30 minutes, and give feedback on what they are talking about. I vote on them after glancing through their content and read all of them, but seeing so many that are not rewarded rightfully for their work make me feel bad. Then I give my feedback so that they can feel that someone cares and appreciates their work. That is really hard and time-consuming so I think I won't be able to do for long but it makes me happy to make this a better place. My work isn't paying me accordingly but hope never dies.
I also saw that there are people like me that are doing the same, but it often feels like we are on the verge of extinction.

Beautiful message here.
I started to change everything on Steemit. At first I posted random content until I realized this is wrong. Now I take my time and think of adding value to all. I want variety of content. I decided that creativity is the best way to achieve so. Now I found myself in love with writing stories and involving the community. Today I finished another story, a fictional story called Steem Survivors. The end is always open and people can suggest in a comment what will happen in the next episode. Hope you enjoy it and happy Steeming

What do I have to offer ?
Something very simole but I hope it will help many: reading their posts and commenting. I want to give a quality feedback to others in order to motivate when needed or correct (with common sense) when the author "lost it". I want a better commjnity not through many posts running for money, but with posts that spark discussions and maybe good debates.
So many posts without good comments (useful, nog just "you're great") or at least many comments is just a narcissistic platform. Exactly Facebook.
Good luck with your projects.
Cheers.

I posted on this also. The blockchain has a huge way to give back. If you have time please check out my post. It's an idea I believe can revolutionize education

:) While reading your post I came up with a short reply. Only to realize that you used it in the middle of the post. Of course, the line is:
> To give is to receive.
It is a natural positive feedback loop.
Enough said.
Happy giving and receiving :)

It's also at the very beginning in the header image :P Maybe a little subconscious stuff happened there? You saw it but didn't see it!
But yeah, I think it's the crux of the whole thing.

I believe here, on Steemit, we're all giving to each other the most precious thing we have - time.
Sounds simple, but time is an actual reward we get in the human blockchain we living in.
And if everyone giving it generously, it transfers to the experience, which enriching every person and the community itself.
So it's true you're saying - being greedy is not the way!

Great post. I think as time goes on, we are all starting to see that giving back to the community, helping to cultivate it and interacting with it is by far the most fulfilling path. In the process of taking the path of virtue here on Steemit instead of pursuing "the almighty [Steem] dollar", we cultivate and grow ourselves. I (or we) applaud your efforts within the community @jamtaylor, you clearly work hard, believe in the greater cause and enjoy doing it. Not to mention the underlying talents you share with us. You've got my vote.

I feel the same way. I came to steemit to continue producing videos, entertaining viewers and taking bold and risky leaps into areas either unknown to me as of recent... (anarchism) has got my attention or very uncomfortable subjects. I am quite successful in the uncomfortable subject matter and if anybody has watched, they will agree. Now I look to explore what this BIG movement on steemit is all about... Whatever side, view or understanding I come to will determine where I stand in the community and I will be fine with that.

Very interesting post. The concept presented within the Steem platform is still something I'm trying to wrap my head around. But one thing I understand is this: that I can give in a meaningful way, without losing anything in the process. This isn't just an interesting idea for a website, it's a world changer.

I propose to make flags for spam categories for plagiarism, an insult.
The higher the reputation the higher the reward upvote.
Make people's committee for tracking plagiarism, not one whale but from ordinary people with a good reputation.
Reputation management up or down should solve ordinary people with a good reputation of the Commission and not a single whale.

I have my photography to offer. I have been on steemit for 3 weeks now and have posted my images every day. i have a degree in advertising photography and have been taking photo's for over 30 yrs so have knowledge of traditional and digital. i specialised at college in archival printing, tinting and toning and intend to write some articles on photography as well as posting my work. I never went into advertising as the more i learnt the more i didnt want to work in that field so ive ended up mostly doing photography for myself and arts sake. i have a good folio of work and have a few pics published. currently im not working due to the joy of inflammatory rheumatoid arthritis so i have time to post everyday. I am also interested in ancient history, particularly Sumerian, Egyptian and Mayan. Astronomy, Theology, Science, Religion. i do a bit of psy-trance dj'ing and am in a band playing experimental music. oh and i'm into quadcopters and have built my own. i also use to be a web designer and built crypto-miners and custom pc's, So i have plenty of things to post. photo's, interesting articles, tutorials, advice etc

Nice, jamtaylor :-)
I too like to give. I like to give a bit of gardening inspiration, a few tips, good photos, all with a touch of humor. Actually, my gardeningassociate says that I am an insane gardener - and by that she means...hmmmm, not sure, but I think I make her laugh a lot. So, if I can make someone laugh a bit, and also get them outside and appreciating the things that are growing around them, then we all win!
I also like to give upvotes to newbies to encourage them to stay ;-)
Check out @gardenlady !!!

In line with trying to find what is in demand, I want to share a piece of myself, but the piece that others are interested in learning about, whether because they are in similar situations or just out of pure curiosity. I want to share experiences and the short bit of advice and things I've learned from those events.
