How I Became A Digital Nomad

in life •  7 years ago

Are you a traveljunkie? Do you daydream of travel? Here's the story of how I broke free and started exploring the world . . .

Travel On The Brain

Since I was roughly 5 years-old, all I ever wanted to do was travel. I was one of those kids that hoarded National Geographic magazines and had world maps on her walls. Whenever extra money and/or extra time was coming my way, I always thought of travel. I had the good fortune of traveling to exotic and fun places with family while I was growing up - that only fueled the desire for MORE travel.

In college (while working as a travel agent, of course), I initially thought it would be cool to find a job where I had to travel for work, but after speaking with people who had to do it routinely, I changed my mind fast. They did not paint a pretty picture about that aspect of their job. It was common not to have much of a choice of destinations (if at all), most of the time was taken up by a meeting (not sightseeing), and bringing family or friends along was not an option. Worst of all, when vacation time came; the last thing they wanted to do was travel! Based on these discussions, I decided that I would wait until I could travel on my own terms.

. . . I Was Tired Of Waiting . . .

After college, I hopped around from corporate job to corporate job - trying to find the 'sweet spot' of a good paycheck and ample vacation time. Unfortunately, over-demanding jobs made it uncomfortable to be out of the office for too long, so small weekend trips became the norm.

I quickly became unhappy
I felt like my dreams of long-term travel (past 7 days) were NEVER going to happen.

In 2007, I "snapped" . . . quit my job, sold all of my belongings (except what I could carry in my suitcase) and I set out on a road-trip. Didn't really have a destination in mind (or a plan), I just decided to live off of my savings and spend some time visiting friends/family in other cities. This was the beginning of my nomadic lifestyle, but it wasn't sustainable on my savings alone.

It dawned on me that for centuries people have moved to new places for a better harvest, better paying jobs, better education, etc - I could do the same. My road-trip ended in San Francisco where I stayed with a friend until I found a job and an apartment to rent. My perspective on 'home' shifted. My plan was to stay temporarily until I had enough money saved to enable me to move to a new place (when I was ready). In 2010, I was plotting my "escape" to New York City when I decided to do something EPIC for my 40th birthday. I decided to take a trip around-the-world!

Finally On The Road!

Shortly after my decision to take an around-the-world trip, I also decided to blog about my adventures. The blog was where I documented my research, explained how I was saving money for the trip, and how I got friends & family (and other travelers) interested in my journey. Setting-up and maintaining the blog was a crash-course in the digital marketing field - I seriously had NO IDEA what I was doing. But, I loved learning about website building, search engine optimization, content marketing, social media engagement, and paid/affiliate ads.

When I returned from my travels, I knew that I wanted a job - No, a career - working in digital marketing. Not only would I use the new skills I developed over the course of 2.5 years, but it was easier to find work that could be done remotely . . . thus, helping me stay nomadic.

While there are many resources out there sharing work-at-home jobs, I found my current position through FlexJobs.com. There are SO many scams aimed at those looking to work from home and I was overjoyed to find a service with LEGITIMATE jobs, with real companies. Instead of being a freelancer and/or having my own company, I opted for a full-time employee position since it's a guaranteed paycheck and provided much needed stability (being 'on the road' is unstable enough).

Stay Tuned . . .

In upcoming posts, I will share details on the reality of being a digital nomad, my favorite travel gear & services, and ultimately why I decided to become an expat.

Welcome to Steem @jannell I have upvoted and sent you a tip

Thanks!

Wow, seems you have led a most interesting life. Particularly after making the 'leap' to other things of life. I read back to your intro and some other posts. It is always amazing to me when people have the courage and 'go for it'-ness to just take the next step, as many talk about it, but never follow through. Plus, you live in what sounds like a way cool and fun (friendly) place. Looking forward to reading more on where you've been, and what lies ahead.

Thank you so much for your comment! It was a lot of hard work and LOTS of soul-searching to get to this point, but TOTALLY worth it ;) Cancun is amazing - at least for me - it has a certain "vibe" about it and the expat community here is incredible. Thanks for taking the time to read my other posts and get to know me - I'm impressed!

I love your story. I think everyone would love to travel full time but there is this stigma of not having a normal, corporate 9-5 job with stability. But I feel we have to do what makes us happy, even if it requires that we get out of our comfort zones. Your story was very inspirational! I hope one day we can all focus on doing what we love and break the boundaries!

Awww, thanks for your comment, @wandertwins. I hope my story is proof that it is possible. In fact, it wasn't until I gave myself over to nomadism that I truly felt like myself. It's very possible to have financial stability AND be nomadic!

Digital nomad.. one who travels frequently as an expat that funds themselves with digital / online content creation?

Would that be an accurate definition?

Yes, that is a good definition. It could also be any traveler (even in their own country) that works remotely - in any job

Welcome! What a story as I can always appreciate another open spirit as to the explorations of the world one stop at a time. Your story sounded similar to mine. I'm sure you'll totally enjoy it here and be that much closer to the ultimate freedom of just going when and where you want at the drop of a hat.

Hi @jacobchamplain! I appreciate your comment - and, yes, it is always wonderful to meet other travelers (the freedom aspect is AWESOME). Thank you SO much for selecting my post for the OCD project - you may use whatever content/photo you wish :) Looking forward to learning from other authors.

Also, for your travels if you have friends that go with you that are U.S. military or veterans they can get exceptionally low rates all around the world. Through my a travel club for veterans alone I've been able to get really nice suites in places such as Fiji at 300USD for a week. Another is through USAA whereas the cheapest hotel deals I'd seen were for like 90 bucks in Puerto Rico I believe. All of the places were really nice resorts by the way. The first place is armed forces vacation club. If you know someone that has a membership they can get you the discounted rate you may have to pay an additional 50 or 100 but it is well worth it.

I will keep that in mind.

We live in an amazing time when we can live and work anywear. I recently finished 3 1/2 months of slow travelling while working online. Amazing! Following

Yes, being able to work anywhere has opened a LOT of options. slow-travel is the best. . . . and it helped keep me sane. Hahaha

Great to meet you. One of my life goals is to blog the world. Not the typical tourist spots -- though those are amazing, I want to share the real people, the real life, the real food, the real living conditions. I know that is not unique, but my perspective is unique -- perhaps someone will be interested in that. Steemit provides the means, eventually.

@chapcl, you'll find there is a unique audience for every author. I know bloggers that write about food in smaller neighborhoods in foreign cities, others that write about adventure travel, . . do whatever you enjoy - that's the key.

Nice article! I wish you more followers and friends! Don't forget to follow me too @apple64

Thank you for your comment, @apple64

Hello from fellow nomad ;) Very nice post.

Thanks for your comment, @roaming.kuba

I'm so glad I found your post. I snapped too in 2011. I have moved 10 times since then. LOL. Met my wife and now have two wonderful sons. We are planning our next big move by flipping a quarter. Congrats on freedom!

Very cool, @binkley!! Sometimes we find our true path when we allow ourselves to "fail". What are the two top destinations you are flipping for?

@jannell Welcome to Steemit! Hope you find this to be a great place to share your ideas and thoughts. Keep Steeming on!

Awesome! Can't wait to see your trips. What I like here on Steemit is that we travel around the world without moving. I think that you may enjoy my trips around Bulgaria, so follow me also. Who knows, you may reach it one day :)

Thank you for your comment, @gabchik. Most of my travels occurred in 2012. I'm focused on becoming a full-time expat now (with the ability to still work at home). Bulgaria is a beautiful country, I hope to spend some time there one day.

This is great! I finished my thesis on digital nomads this year and it is still great to peek in and see what's up on the nomadic field. I used to communicate a lot through Facebook, but it' great that there is also a community growing on Steemit!

Keep it up! I am jealous and aspire to become a nomad in the coming years :)

Do it, @sjennon! Becoming a nomad was one of the best decisions of my life. Just keep it a priority and it will happen. Congrats on booking your world trip! . . . January will be here before you know it :) SUPER interested in that thesis of yours - is it somewhere I can read it? I love UX/UI and need to learn more < can you suggest a few of your blogs on this topic (I didn't scroll all the way down your blog list).

When I finish that trip, I am looking more than forward to starting my life as a slow-nomad. Just a bit of everthing :)

There is currently nowhere where you can read it, also its unfortunately in Dutch. I sent it out to a couple of my English friends by using this instant pdf translator. The translations are a bit off, but I think you can still get the gist of that.

What are you looking for when it comes to UX and UI? So far I only did two reviews on Steepshot and the Steemit signin (basically just pointing out some UX basics and my own irritations though).

Those two reviews would be a good start. I want to review the basics you have. My passion (professionally speaking) is improving conversion rates on websites and UX/UI play right into that.

Oh that sounds interesting! Conversion rates are pretty important.. It's always best to have close contact with the client to figure out what they want and desire. There is no such thing as good UI because it's dependant on the target group.

Ah! good point. Yeah, understanding the target audience demographic is SO important. I don't think a lot of businesses understand that niche focus is key. NOT trying to be everything to everyone.

NOT trying to be everything to everyone.

AMEN!

Awesome story about your travel life. I could say I'm having a similar experience too, I want to become a digital nomad so badly. I started to travel since I was very young too because of my dad brought me to travel everywhere.

Right now I'm hoping by creating contents in Steemit could help me to subsidy some of my living expenses so I could have more time to photographs more.

Wow! you have an interesting life, @travelingtaka. Isn't couchsurfing fun? I only did it about 5 times, but I met the most interesting people (and it's fun to live like a local). Nomadic Matt's blog is awesome - he inspired me, too. You should check out https://www.ottsworld.com/ < Sherry is a good friend and an amazing travel photographer.

I actually done some couchsurfing before, but I didn't like it very much. I follow Nomadic Matt too! Thanks for the link

so interesting! cannot wait for the next post :) upvoted and followed :)

Thanks for your comment, @nutschii - I'm glad you enjoyed it.

How are you enjoying Cancun. I have also been living as a digital nomad and I spent a few days in Cancun on my way to Playa Del Carmen. Two places near you I would definitely recommend if you haven't been is Akumal and cenote Azul. Swimming with the sea turtles in Akumal was amazing

I love being in Cancun! It has the beaches I like, with friendly locals, and big city conveniences. I've been to Playa Del Carmen, but not Akumal . . . I will definitely add it (and cenote Azul) to my list. Thanks for taking the time to comment :)

Hey! I led the digital nomad lifestyle for a few years after college - reading this post makes me want to go back to it. Looking forward to following your journey! I'm brand new here, so any tips for finding other like-minded individuals would be appreciated!

Hiya, @jasonsnow! Yes, being a digital nomad has been fun. You should revisit it and see if it still holds the magic for you ;) I don't have any tips for finding people - to be honest, I've "met" more like-minded people just by sharing this post!

Noted - thanks!

WOw, that's interesting... you're the first digital nomad I've ever heard of -- including me -- who wasn't a freelancer/entrepreneur :)

How does that work with the constant interruptions of travel?

Scheduling Skype calls to the West Coast from e.g Asia is a NIGHTMARE...

Some of the breathtaking mountain landscapes that will be posted on the @traveladdict blog in a few days were taken just before/after doing early morning / late night calls with clients in Europe... and that's bad enough!

(I was literally sitting on a hilltop in Nepal and finally found some good wifi)

Hahah!! Oh yes, time-zone 'hell' can be difficult to navigate. I practice the art of slow-travel, so I'm not constantly on the move. Days when I'm flying are scheduled around evenings and/or weekends. BUT (as the bottom of my post indicates) my new focus is becoming an expat in Cancun, so I'll be here awhile.

You are SO lucky to have found a solid wifi in Nepal (I couldn't get a stable connection to save my life). Speaking of hilltops in Nepal, check out Nagarkot if you get a chance - sunrises are spectacular.

Aha, OK. What do you do for work?

Yes Wifi in Nepal is a royal pain. I was constantly fighting with it. As soon as I got to Bangkok I picked up a super high powered USB wifi adapter to use as a secret weapon if I ever find myself in a Nepal like place again.

Nagarkot looks awesome!

I work as an SEO Specialist for a company that offers a website service for chiropractors and dentists. I wrote a post last week about my primary focus: https://steemit.com/business/@jannell/what-the-hell-is-a-digital-marketing-foundation

Cool! Makes sense. And SEO is a good first step for marketing. But IMHO there's WAAAY more to a foundational digital marketing strategy than just SEO... SEO is a tactic, a specifict tool, a strategy to me would be something more like "do SEO, and conversion optimize, and PPC, and build a relationship via email, and have joint venture partners, and work on referrals, and do this all on a low "doesn't break the bank level" while watching what gets us the best ROI..."

Ooo!! someone to talk 'shop' with :) YAY . . thank you for your thought-provoking comment. I agree, a lot goes into being successful in digital marketing.

I would definitely add the email relationship as the next step (for most business models). But, I don't lump it into the foundation as in order to get the visitor to subscribe, the website needs to convert them first.

I keep PPC out of the foundation basics as it isn't necessary for all businesses. For example, it's not particularly effective for brick-and-mortar businesses in small jurisdictions.

Yes, building referrals (as well as review/testimonial solicitation) is a low cost tactic I believe should be done by every business. But, again, I don't consider these foundational since there needs to be an existing (previously-converted) customer base for this 'off-page' strategy to work.

In my opinion, I wouldn't list 'joint venture partners' being part of the 'foundation'. I've worked on many websites for family-owned or sole practitioner type businesses. I would think a quality website, with a good conversion rate, and analytics data as proof, would be much more effective in soliciting venture capitalists. However, I don't have much experience at that level of a business foundation.

This is fun, @traveladdict - I like thinking about this stuff (and clearly passionate about it). Wheeee! I'm working on a post about my perspective on the difference between a business foundation and a digital marketing foundation. I'm gonna stalk you until you read it and make me think some more ;)

How does one convert the earning to real cash?

I'm sorry, @mickyscofield. I do not know. I've only been on SteemIt for about 13 days. I hope you find your answer - it HAS to be shared in the SteemIt-sphere somewhere. Good luck

Good post I am following you now too, I hope in the next year or two to possibly goes overseas and teach English. I make a little on youtube on the side that I can do anywhere, hoping to start making some cash blogging too. I need more travel in my life.

Great options to explore further, @viraldrome. I know several people that began their nomadic lifestyle (slow-travel) by teaching English overseas. I hope the YouTube earnings grow for you. Travel is amazing and seems to speak to one's soul.

Great to have you here with us on this amazing platform.

What a great post! I always find it amazing when people can manage to live a lifestyle of travel. I always imagined it would be filled twists and turns around every corner. It's so nice to read about someone living their dream. Keep it up!

It was a huge personal accomplishment to reach the nomadic lifestyle. Yes, there are plenty of twists and turns to be had (I think that's mostly how I learned to be patient!). Thanks for your comment, @lexikon082!

Upvoted!! Very inspiring. I'm gonna follow you for more info, Jannell. I'm looking to do something similar, but am afraid to leave the comfort zone, and feel to insecure about myself, and what I do in terms of work and earning money, as a digital nomad. Look forward to future posts!

Oh, @brianholm, don't be afraid to push yourself! There's a saying I like: life begins at the edge of your comfort zone < this is so true. I had a lot of fears (of the unknowns) before making the leap to be nomadic, but those fears turned into confidence on the road. Keep focused on your goal, make it a priority, and it will happen. I hope my future posts help inspire you <3

I am impressed with your story, thank you

If you're a nomad, is there a reason you put Cancun as a location on your profile? Or do you change it with your travels?

I was nomadic for a long time. If you read what I wrote under the 'Stay Tuned' header, I've decided to become an expat. . . . in Cancun, where I currently am. I still have the ability to be nomadic, though.

Yeah, my eye saw Cancun and my brain said squirrel!

Hahahah!! My brain does that to me ALL. THE. TIME. . . . .(makes me think of Dug from the movie 'Up')

Guess I should watch that movie sometime, I'm always behind.

You SHOULD . . . it's one of my all time favs. Dug will make you laugh

ok, I'll log that for when I watch a movie.

Good for you - making your dreams happen. Oddly, while so many kiwis have a compulsion to do their OE, I never did and have been quite happy in our little corner of the world. But I love to read about everybody else's adventures.

Thanks, @kiwideb! What is 'OE'? I'm sure it has something to do with long-term travel, but I don't know what the letters stand for. There are more adventures in life than just travel ;)

Maybe OE is a kiwi-ism - it means Overseas Experience
...
It just looked on wikipedia and yes it is just us
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overseas_experience

Ah! Got it. Thank you for sharing that

Great story Jannell. I have had some similar experiences after losing my first business in the credit crunch / recession I began my own digital marketing and web design business which 7 or so years later allowed me to live internationally.

Currently living between England & California.

Keep up the good work!

Awesome! Both that you have your own business lasting over 7 years (that takes a lot of work), AND that you live internationally. Thank you for your comment, @davidalexander

Thanks for sharing your experience. Yes, it was not that easy to become a Digital Nomad at the time when you started your journey. But now, with all the opportunities and capabilities it became more like a "piece of cake". As for scams, unfortunately they will always show their presence. Luckily the amount of real companies offering jobs for freelancers grows every day, so the probability of encountering illegal or "one day" ventures lowers

Thanks for your comment, @colivingclub. There are definitely more resources available to those who wish to become a nomad. I think the biggest hurdle is the belief system of the individual. They have to believe they can do it and make it a priority until it's a reality. Those are not easy.

cool story ! im also new here, good luck !!

Very inspiring. Thanks for sharing a bit of your story being a digital nomad. This was the first post I read about you. Thanks. Greetings from Switzerland.
