There's A Diamond Mine Open To The Public Just 2 Hours From Here

White, brown and yellow diamonds are found there:

Where are we, Africa? lol..I was surprised to find that right over in Southwest Arkansas, Murfreesboro, is a diamond mine. Well, they call it a "mine" but it's actually a field. It's open to the public and whatever you find is yours.

It's called The Crater Of Diamonds State Park and they've had diamonds discovered there since 1906. It's a Volcanic Pipe which is part of an ancient volcano.

It's still producing

33,100 diamonds have been found since it became a state park in 1972.
The park has a 37.5 acre field where people can go search using several methods and an average of 2 diamonds a day are still being found.

They plow the field once a month so the best time is to go right after they plow but no one knows when that is because they don't tell. After it rains is also a good time to go although it's a muddy mess.

Many diamonds are found just by walking along and looking at the surface like this 14 yr old kid did. He found a diamond in his first 30 minutes. Turned out to be a brown diamond, the largest brown one found in the last 40 years, 7.44 carats.

It'd been raining that week and the larger gems are exposed, it caught his eye several feet away.

Some people think the park is a ripoff because they charge $10 for adults and $6 for kids to look for diamonds and unless you spends many days there the chances of finding one big enough to be worth something is slim.

Afterall, the same field has been replowed and searched over everyday for 47 years. And yet diamonds and other gems are still being found.

It ain't just diamonds

Some of the other gems that are found there are lamproite, amethyst, banded agate, jasper, peridot, garnet, quartz, calcite, barite, and hematite.

So rock hounds enjoy the place too. The park has wash bins where you can take screen boxes and wash away the dirt from the stones:

You can also take a 5 gallon bucket of stones home with you if you want to search through them at home. The park rents out shovels, buckets and screen boxes if you don't want to bring your own.

Maybe this guy has a good idea since he's getting down below the top soil:

That makes sense. Most people just stay on the surface though.

If you ARE lucky enough to find one they have experts on site that will certify the diamond:

The original owner didn't care

What's interesting is that the original owner of the land was a farmer named John Huddlestone who found what he thought were two large crystals in 1906.

He took them to a jeweler and found out they were large diamonds so the word spread and people started flocking to the area to search for more.

But the interesting part is that he didn't care about diamonds so he sold the land for $36,000. He looks like he didn't give a flip about diamonds don't he? lol.

Check out the park here. Take the kids, put 'em to work. lol.

I'd like to stop in there for a day or so, any takers out there? Is it worth the chance? I think so.

PS- Been working so much offline that I haven't had time to put into research in my Frank Hamer series but that should change soon(much to the chagrin of some) as the cold weather is finally getting here.

Wow!! A diamond is said ro be a girl's besr friend. I'll have to come and visit 😉😊

Posted using Partiko Android

Howdy dkkarolien! I agree with that and I'm sure lots of guys go there for that reason!

Howdy Janton! Wow! Only in Texas, lol. To bad we don't live nearby, because our boys love to dig in dirt and I am sure they would find something, lol. However when are you going there??? 😂

  ·  5 years ago (edited)

Well this is in Arkansas and I never go that direction but maybe someday if I can convince Mrs. J. which is the big question. lol. But yeah the boys would probably love it. They might be able to pay for their college education!

You better convince Mrs. J Janton! To bad we live so far, otherwise we would come for sure. But I will mention that to my son in law, lol.

I am surprised for that long nobody come and flip this land upside down and get all the diamonds.
Like you said they are making a slow but steady profit by charging folks.
At least it is a state park.

Howdy sir pouchon! Well, they tried to mine if like a regular mine but they said that it didn't produce enough diamonds to make it profitable. This way the state makes alot of money on it without doing much!

Take a big vacuum cleaner there! You might strike it rich! LoL

There ya go sir kaminchan, a big labor saver!

Is this the diamond field in Arkansas?

Howdy sir richq11! yes sir, over in Murfreesboro, have you been there?

No sir, I haven't been yet, but its on my bucket list.

Diamonds, not geologically rare.
They would be 5usd a karat, if it wasn't for DeBeers.

Emeralds are rare.

Howdy freebornangel! Thanks for the knowledgable comment!

Howdy Jonboy!
Great post! You found the diamond mine HA HA. I have friends that go to Mt Ida every so often to dig for crystals. There are lots of crystal mines in that part of Arkansas including the diamond mine HA HA. You aren't far if you are only two house away. You must live in north central part of Texas close to the Oklahoma border.

I had no idea Arkansas was so rich in gems and crystals! I think it's pretty cool and would make a fun post if I found something. Yeah, we're in Northeast Texas.

Add going to the Arkansas diamond mine to your 2020 list of places to visit. There is even camp sites around too. You could go camping and digging for crystals HA HA. I've still got a couple crystals in my collection that I found here 13 years ago. You won't be disappointed.

Yeah I should watch the weather and go there after a rainstorm and muck around a bit! Thanks Rainbow Man!

Hello janton, it will make a great post if you find some big diamonds. Maybe there is one tor two waiting for you with your name of them.

That is very possible, I'll have to try it sometime!

I look forward to the post.

Haha, so interesting. I have a niece who has gone there with her husband and 3 kids several times. I don't think they have found any diamonds, but they have fun going there!

Howdy violetmed! Oh that's cool. Yes it looks like a great park with other activities if you get tired of digging in the dirt. lol.

Howdy Jonboy. Why are you still sitting on your butt and posting on Steem. Haul you ass over to the diamond site and mine some diamonds instead. 😎

Oh man, that would make a great post if I found something wouldn't it?

It certainly would. So, when are you going mining, looking for that diamond you promise Mrs J?

I have no idea sir Vincent, she doesn't even know about the place so I have to tell her and see what she says. My guess is that she won't like the idea at all. lol.

Why do you keep such an important piece of news from Mrs. J. She might want to try her luck. She might get lucky. And that will end you penny pinching ways. 😎 😂

I'll pass the idea on to her and see what she says but generally she would rather not get dirty no matter how big the reward!

That is very interesting.

If it were near me, I think I would go.

Howdy jacey.boldart! I think it would be worth at least a day's labor just for the fun of it, you never know! Especially if you go after it rains.

Been on my list of places for a family vaca for a few years now. Girls are almost old enough where all three of them will enjoy it thoroughly.

Oh I bet that is very true. That sounds like a winning plan!

We will make arrangements after new year sir janton...hehe 🤣 🤣 🤣

If you survive the big party!

Well it was a great entry into 2020 and i did survive it after all that plonk...hehe 🤭 🤣

Yay you survived! Did you do a post about it?

Yep i did and i did a post on it ...Bring in 2020 take a look sir janton 👍

I'll go over there today sir hangin, at the risk of getting envious!

Mornin’ Cowboy! I would love to spend time in the field searching for precious stones.

I think you should plan on that for your next trip South. Do you ever come South? lol.

I have been to Florida years ago but would have to renew my passport to travel outside Canada these days. At one time you could go into the U.S. showing a driver’s license -now you have to have a passport or give blood (jesting) 😂. It’s the same all over.

Yeah it's gotten quite a bit more of a hassle I heard. Florida would be great to escape to in the winter time!

I know a few people who go to Florida or Myrtle Beach for a few months in winter. I don’t mind the changing seasons here - it’s always been part of my life.

I really like the seasons too but the winters up there seem a little long to me. lol.

Haha Cowboy, your remark reminds me of the saying, “If you want the cherries you’ve got to take the pits.

That's very true ain't it? Very few places have perfect weather!

Terrific post @janton! I've wanted to go there for a long time but haven't been able to yet. Digging for sapphires in Montana is on my bucket list also. There is just something about searching for buried treasure that fascinates me. Probably from my mom having treasure hunts with all her kids to shut them up for a while..lol. Do you watch The Curse Of Oak Island? I remember reading about Oak Island when I was a kid and was so excited about such a place and the possibilities of real treasure being there. Anyway, I love the show and look forward to what they may find and just the process of it all. Wishing you a Happy New Year! 🙂

Howdy deerjay! Oh, the Montana thing sounds interesting too, I haven't heard about that. I haven't watched The Curse Of Oak Island but I see the previews for it all the time. I thought they finally found some treasure but probably not. Then the show would end! Your mom was very smart!

Thanks for sharing your experience with us!

Greetings my friend, nope, you will not find me there, as many precious stones here in Africa, in unplowed lands Lol.
Don't be surprised when an "Inner-Blocks" curation appears here for ya!
Blessings!

Lord Janton! Ghost from Christmas past here wishing you a happy new year and all the best for 2020!

I can't promise diamonds although they are just basically compressed rock or carbon so all you need is a super pressure cooker and you can make your own - then sell it!

Congratulations on rep 70 too!

Well well well..if it ain't the great sir nickyhavey. What an honor to hear from you! I thought of you the other day and thought "I need to get back in touch with that guy!"

What's interesting is that we must have totally different contacts because I never see your name so it's easy to forget someone. I severely miss your quick wit and banter though, I think you're the funniest guy on steemit.

I assume you are very busy with your job but you are on Christmas break now? I've cut way back on steemit time, what about you?

It has been a while hey Lord Janton! Must be 3 or 4 months I think!

I don't think we're in any of the same communities any more so it would make sense we don't come across each other as much. I'm not in steemitbloggers/PHC anymore and I think that's where we would have caught up with each other. Nowadays, I'm just free roaming the steem blockchain, mostly reading travel posts and polluting the platform with the toxic wasteland that is my blog 😃

Thankfully we have the week off over Xmas, back to work again on Thursday. I'm probably spending a bit more time on Steem than I was before as I've set up a contest with plantstoplanks, cheese4ead and foxyspirit (you probably recognise those big names)!

How are you finding life post HF21?

Howdy today sir nickyhavey! Yes I know those big names but rarely see them anymore which is strange because people say that steemit is half the size it was before HF21.

I'm fine with the post HF21 era except I hate the downvoting nonsense which drives people away and is being used for censorship. But if prices increase then maybe it won't matter. From everything I've read cryptos should be heading higher this year, we just don't know if Steem will follow.

I thought you'd be spending less time on here because of the job. Are you able to multitask at work?

"toxic wasteland" of your blog! lol...no that's my blog not yours!

They are still active although this time of the year is busy for everyone with the holiday period so STEEM naturally takes a back seat for 3D life!

I think the downvotes themselves (without factoring in bad use such as retaliation or bullying) are actually a good thing and what the platform needed to counter bid bot abuse, spam and scam type stuff. Seems that those things have drastically decreased which is a good thing.

I do believe STEEM price will follow although it has been forming its own patterns on the charts over the last few months, seems to be going through a weekly/bi-weekly cycle of fluctuating across a few hundred sats which is better than it completely plummeting like it has done so the tide seems to have been stemmed somewhat.

There are quiet times at work so I can sometimes go on STEEM but looks like they are changing my role in the next couple of weeks so will need to see what will happen there. At least it's allowed me to buy some STEEM at these cheap prices and grow my account.

  ·  5 years ago (edited)

Howdy today sir nickyhavey! This is one of my first comments of the new year. You don't do crypto or steem analysis posts do you? I think you should, you're so good at it!

I get it with the downvoting but can't they allow it to be used for the spam and bots and not for attacking people? So many have left because of the attacks and it's not exactly a selling point for new members. I don't know the exact stats but I hear that we're not getting nearly enough new members.

But overall I'm fairly bullish on steem and steemit. What are they changing your role at work to, some type of analyst? Or company jester? They still have those over there? lol.

What did you do for New Years Eve, don't tell me you didn't drink alcohol!

Hey Lord Janton!

No, I'm not that good with the technical stuff on the charts for STEEM and price analysis. Just look at the overall trends from the last couple of months and then use some guess work (although I think most "analysts" do that too haha)! I have been doing the beginner's guides from time to time which seem to be quite popular but that's not what my blog is about so don't write so much about it.

Can't they allow it to be used for the spam and bots and not for attacking people?

Trouble is, you get trolls anywhere. They exist on Youtube, facebook, twitter etc. The only difference is that you can't block users from seeing or voting on your content which is what some would argue "against the ethos of blockchain technology" but if it's cutting off the nose to spite the face by keeping downvotes for that reason alone then it's a bit stupid. Steemit does have the power to delete those accounts (and we know who they are, all those downvoting mosquito bites) - if that's what people are talking about to attract new users then there will be no new users!

We're focusing on the wrong thing with STEEM if that's the case. There's a LOT of far better things going on here - in your own words, people should stop being such sissies!

Haha, being a jester is an added bonus that the company got when they employed me :D other than that, as usual, there are some clowns about the place but you get that everywhere.

NYE, I was at my brother's place with a few friends playing games and I did have some champagne to see in the new decade! I take it you drank your body weight in redneck beer??

Sir nickyhavey! Yes that makes total sense. I know they have many good things going for steemit and steem and that's why I'm bullish but new members don't seem to be joining in large enough numbers. But maybe they will as prices increase. It's always a wait and see game here.

Communities are being formed but you already have yours in the music niche.

Ah ha! So you DID drink! That sounds like fun.

Here it was dreadfully boring since Mrs. J went to bed at 6:30 because she gets up at 3:30 for work today so I just steemed on.. listening to all the gunfire and fireworks going off and could see some of the fireworks from our place so that was cool.

Don't even have a beer in the house or any wine but I sure wished I had!

I know of a some people that went, they were there for the day and found some neat rocks but no diamonds. They just looked on the surfaced but said it was still a neat experience.

I think it would be sir simms50. I'd go after a rainstorm.

@janton, I hope you had a good Christmas with your family. I think I want to visit this place soon, love the stones too💎🥰👍

Yes it would be a blast, come on over! lol.

I've always wanted to go there @janton, maybe on my next trip to Nebraska. 🤞
