I MISSED A GOOD OPPORTUNITY AND LEARNED A PAINFUL LESSON TODAY

in life •  7 years ago  (edited)

I am always multitasking and I knew that one day it will come to bite me in the behind but not this way. I missed one very important email because at the moment, my brain has too many tabs open.

I actually don't know how I am managing to pop in on Steemit. My life is an absolute mess. (For now). Not to mention, there are crazy floods and rains in my city Nairobi. I love rainy weather but the rain is disrupting our life a bit. So many people missed work today... But that's a story for another day soon.

A few months ago, I got an invite to speak at an event. Ths was the year that I was supposed to do many speaking gigs and I was very excited. However, as the weeks drew nearer, I discovered that I was not getting any solid communication from the people organising the event. Normally, they tell you what to expect and they keep you updated and even invite you for networking session or to see the venue. They brief you about what type of presentation it will be. Because this did not happen, I did not know anything going on. However, I know my stuff and I was very excited to speak.

So, through the months, I have been waiting for this event. They released the official programme and I was supposed to speak tomorrow (Friday) but tomorrow I will be out of the city so I told them (days ago) to slot me in for Thursday which they said they would communicate. Days passed and I was waiting for the email that says, "Okay Jean, You can come speak on Thursday."

So on Monday, I check and there is no communication and the email is still unanswered. I did a second follow-up email on Tuesday and it turns out, they responded immediately. I do not know how I did not see that response. The funny thing is I have been checking my email faithfully and for some reason, I must have opened it and because it was marked as read, I did not see that he had confirmed for Thursday 11 am. In my head, I am wondering why they were not communicating and the event was a very small one so they are not active on social media and I did not have their number.

I blame myself 100% because I must have opened that email absent-mindedly and not registered what I was reading because I was not concentrating. I have realised that I sometimes, I do two tasks at the same time. I could uploading images here and in the interim, I could be on Photoshop doing something else.

I have learnt to FOCUS ON ONE THING AT A TIME. The task at hand requires my attention. Even when my life is in chaos, I intend to plan my tasks better and to focus on them.

What is a crazy thing that has happened to you because you were not paying attention/ focusing?

Well we learn the hard way most times, missed an opportunity too towards the end of last year, worst part is they sent several emails, I never saw them, they called, the number was showing spam and I dont pick those , so 'ilienda tu hivyo' (just went like that).
So nowdays I check everything, spam and all, if I get a missed call I return it immediately, you never know.

Welcome back and SteemOn!

I am so sorry for that. Happens to the best of us but we all learn a lesson. Maybe the opportunity was not for you at the time and there will be many more to come.

I hate when a great opportunity goes to the Spam folder. I always check that folder.

Ayayay thats the story of my life, tho the only thing i can think of right now is like when im looking for my phone, asking everybody if they have seen it while its in my hands. Lol.

Hehe or looking for your keys when holding them.

So sorry this happened to you.

This issue with emails I suffer it alot. I read so many of them and totally forget. Then there is the case of reading my own things. From your lesson here I think I will be more careful. I can attest that I have already embarrassed myself a few times asking for something already sent.

I know. We are always multitasking. Thanks. Hope to see you soon.

sorry about that, lessons learned.

Oh man, I'm sorry. I do the same as you, especially with email! I will open it on my phone and then think "Oh, I will reread this later on the computer, because it's easier there" and then totally forget.

Sorry about the missed opportunity. Here's wishing you more luck in the future and more speaking gigs!
