1502 – Christopher Columbus landed at Guanaja in the Bay Islands off the coast of Honduras during his fourth voyage.

1619 – In Jamestown, Virginia, the first representative assembly in the Americas, the House of Burgesses, convened for the first time.

1859 – First ascent of Grand Combin, one of the highest summits in the Alps. We tend to assume that the mountains in Europe must have been first climed hundreds of years ago. But that assumption is wrong. Only within the 19th century were the summits of the high peaks finally reached.

1865 – The steamboat "Brother Jonathan" sank off the coast of Crescent City, California. Brother Jonathan was a paddle steamer that crashed on an uncharted rock near Point St. George, off the coast of Crescent City, California. The ship was carrying 244 passengers and crew with a large shipment of gold.

1866 – New Oreleans, Louisiana's Democratic government ordered police to raid an integrated Republican Party meeting, killing 40 people and injuring 150.

1871 – The Staten Island Ferry Westfield’s boiler exploded, killing over 85 people.

1872 - Mahlon Loomis patented wireless telegraphy.

1898 - Will Kellogg invented Corn Flakes.

1908 - Around the World Automobile Race ended in Paris.

1916 – Black Tom Island explosion in Jersey City, New Jersey.

1928 - George Eastman showed the first color motion pictures (US).

1932 – Premiere of Walt Disney's Flowers and Trees, the first cartoon short to use Technicolor and the first Academy Award winning cartoon short.

1938 - Seth Nicholson Discovered Jupiter's Moon Carme.

1971 – Apollo 15 Mission: David Scott and James Irwin on the Apollo Lunar Module module Falcon land on the Moon with the first Lunar Rover.

2003 – In Mexico, the last 'old style' Volkswagen Beetle rolled off the assembly line.
